On 3-3-2003, I attempted to run Disk Cleanup, as I
usually do once a month. The progress bar stopped after
about one-tenth of the way, and the program just hung up,
at the point of "Scanning: Compress Old Files". I
closed Disk Cleanup and tried to run it again, but it
would not open. I restarted the system and tried Disk
Cleanup again with the same results. At this point, all
programs opened very slowly or not at all, especially
system oriented programs.

I checked Disk Manager for any conflicts, but there were
none. I restored the system to a point on the previous
day, but the problem with Disk Cleanup persisted. I ran
Disk Defragmentor. It opened and operated very slowly.
There was no improvement in performance after
defragging. I ran Disk Check later that evening, and the
volume checked out ok. But the problem persisted.

The Norton Anti-Virus virus definitions are up to date.
I had run a virus check before first running Disk
Cleanup, and the system was clean.

There are no new recent hardware or software additions.

Disk Cleanup was last run the first week of last month
without any problems. It has always run well without any
problems; this phenomenon has never occurred before.

A third party suggested that I check Task Manager to see
about cpu usage. I had noticed previously when first
troubleshooting this problem that the cpu was running at
100%. Examination of Task Manager indicated that when
Disk Cleanup's executable, cleanmrg.exe was running, it
was consuming 99% of the cpu's usage. And the cpu was
running at 100%. I disable cleanmgr.exe in Task Manager,
and the system returned to running at single digit cpu
usage.

Apparently, the problem lies in cleanmgr.exe, or so I
thought.

The cleanmgr.exe file lies in two places: c:\i386 and
c:\windows\system32. There is also a cleanmgr.ex_ file
in the i386 folder. Cleanmgr.exe is file version
6.0.2600.0 and dated 8-18-2001.

Disk Cleanup cannot be uninstalled because it is not a
Windows Compenent.

The previously mentioned third party provided a copy of
cleanmgr.exe, also version 6.0.2600.0 but dated 8-23-
2001. This was placed in the above folders after
renaming the existing files, and Disk Cleanup was run.
The same problem occurred. Disk Cleanup would not
function; it just hung up and used 100% of cpu resources.

So, what could be causing Disk Cleanup to malfunction?

Thanks for the help.

>This is caused by the "compress old files" function of
disk cleanup tool scanning files and calculating for file
compression, (assuming we all want to save space). Just
click your run, type in "regedit.exe" for the windows
registry editor, then click edit and find, and type
in "compress old files". Or just navigate to that sub-key
using this path here;
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersio
n\Explorer\VolumeCaches\Compress old files. Then to be
safe, in the registry editor, select file from the top
menu, then export, and save that "compress old files"
subkey as a .reg file. Then delete only that registry
subkey, and disk clean up will run through quickly. Also
there is an option button after disk cleanup has run, when
you click to select the "compress old files" that allows
you to change the # of days for files to be "old". Also
look here on line 48, right side area for basically the
same fix as mine is;
