Hi
Have just recently upgraded my PC with a new motherboard and processor.

Motherboard is .....Gigabyte GA-7ZXE VIA KT133A AGPset
Processor is ....AMD 1800+ XP

After a few initial problems which have since been sorted (thanks to help
from you guys) i am having trouble with my USB ports on my mainboard. I
have 2 USB ports which i use for my ASDL modem and webcam. Trouble is i can
be on the Internet and my modem lights just go out and it stops working,
which then meens i have to reboot to get them back on and reconnect to the
net. At first i thougt it may be my modem ...but i have since discovered
that when this happens my webcam also wont work it prompts me to plug it in
when it already is???

OK..so i now know this is a USB problem but i dont know why it keeps
switching itself off??...I am running Win2000Pro and never had any probs
with my old motherboard and processor. I have checked in system properties
and thought i had solved it as under my modem in Power Management 'Allow
computer to turn off this device to save power' was checked. I unchecked
this but it still happens regulary!!

Does this sound like a fault with the motherboard

PS i have updated my motherboards BIOS

Does this mobo use the VIA chip set? There`s a known problem whereby some
USB modems try to draw too much power from the MB so to prevent damage the
USB ports are shut down until the computer is rebooted. Then the cycle
begins again...
Try using a powered USB hub and see if that cures the problem. Or get a PCI
ADSL modem.

Hi
Possibly the adsl modem(Alcatel?)is pulling to much current through the
usbports and they are shutting down.
USB ports supply 500 ma (off the top of my head)max and many adsl
modems pull more than this(especially the grenn froggy Alcatel)
No doubt many motherboards will not supply 500ma as well
Try an external powered usb port hub.

Hi
Cheerz for the speedy reply ;o)

Yep it is the green Alcatel...how come it used to work fine with my old
motherboard???...do some support more than 500ma??

Also....would this cause it to shut off both of my USB ports??
If so can u reccommend what type of USB i need... would a PCI card with 4
USB be ok

Hiya
Well some boards might support a bit more than 500ma and maybe some less
I tried an internal pci card and an external powered hub(Belkin F5UO21u)
and the external was far better, also more tolerant of front side bus
overclocking
