Something I avoid because they are usually pretty lengthy postings.
Some people like to respond to several "threads" or subjects at once and
IMNSHO "in my not so humble opinion" I don't like the multi-threaded things.
I like to choose which threads I want to follow and not be bothered by
the rest. However, to each his own. "TEHO?"

: what is a gleaning as understood by this list?

Akio, from Japan, gleans the phrases with which he is unfamiliar from
previous weeks postings and sends these items to the list. Members of
the list then clarify the meaning of the gleaned phrases.

One of our list members, Akio Tanaka, who is from Japan, each week creates
a list of terms from the words-l postings which are not familiar to him.
Many of them are culturual references -- which we then explain/expand on, etc.
This list is called 'Gleanings'. I have not been around long enough to
know how this list came to be known as 'gleanings'.

Sorry, Lisa, but you have a completely incorrect image of 'Gleanings.'

Every Monday, our esteemed colleague Akio Tanaka sends out his
collection of phrases gleaned from the week's discussions. As a
teacher of English, Akio is extremely interested in the whys and
wherefores of our language, and his curiosity about our culture is
detailed and insatiable. He *really* wants to know the significance of
the terms he gleans.

I find great value in learning which of our phrases require day-to-day
cultural contact; among those are numerous advertising slogans that
creep into general parlance (e.g., 'I'm not an X, but I play one on
TV'). Akio also seems to glean a goodly number of historical
references, such as my own mention of the Inchon landing.

So Akio *isn't* combining responses to multiple threads. He is,
instead, doing a 'meta-analysis' of the words-l discussion process.

Akio Tanaka gleans our messages for things he doesn't understand,
and can't find in other sources. What he doesn't know is that
there are plenty of things native speakers of English don't under-
stand in each other's postings, so we all benefit from answers to
gleanings. Akio usually posts them early Monday morning.

Sorry for including a (relatively) long posting, but I wanted to say that
I agree with Neal - I've been very interested in the Gleanings, to see
what needs additional explanation, and sometimes to find out the meaning
of something that I didn't understand! Neal, you expressed my feelings
about the Gleanings quite well. Reading them has made me think more
about language, and the cultural content of what we say, and how we
say it. Long live the Gleanings!

OH! okay. I am on a couple of other lists that seem to have the same type
of responses. Maybe that is the same type of situation? or not. However,
I apologize to our friend Akio. I might be confusing some of words-l style
postings with belief-l postings. LJG
