I was in the process of trying to establish an Ethernet
connection between my Windows 98 computer and a local
Windows NT 4.0 workstation. In my frustration, I deleted
the TCP/IP protocal from Windows 98.
I re-install TCP/IP but now I receive the following
message EVERYTIME Netscape 4.6 starts when I try to
connect to the web over Juno Web:

Netscape was unable to create a network socket connection.

I deleted and re-installed the DUN adapter, and also
re-installed Netscape 4.6. Still get same error.
Juno E-Mail works O'K. SFC shows system files are O'K.

Any suggestions on what is wrong ???

Thanks:

John

I have used newsgroups and benefited, so I thought I'd share the wealth.

I have a PII-350 running on Windows 98 (1st version :( ), using a
Linksys Gateway Router/Hub
connected to Cable modem. Primarily I use Netscape Communicator with IE
and Opera as backup.

After cleaning out my computer of needless files and programs, I ran
into a problem where
I could not access the internet from IE, Netscape, or Opera. The
message from Netscape was:

"Netscape was unable to create a network socket connection..."

After much hair-pulling and research on the net, I found that using
Q241344 from Microsoft's Support Knowledge Base solved the problem. I
guess the winsocks and/or the registries were corrupt from some other
program I had on there (Wingate maybe?).

(FYI, I also checked and reinstalled the winsock and wsock files,
deselected and reselected Dial Up Networking, reinstalled the
Network...all with no change in condition.)

Hope this helps others.

If it does, please confirm by posting so that others can benefit as
well!!!

This specific section did the trick:

you are not prompted to restart your computer, restart it manually).

e.After Windows restarts, repeat steps A through D, except click

I finally found the problem. While searcing around the Netscape
site, I found reference to a "Failure to Initialize Windows Socket
Interface Code" message. Its Microsoft's reference number Q246727.
Basically, you use Regedit to delete the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2

Then delete DUN, reboot, and re-install DUN.
It seems that the key or value can become currupt and is
rebuilt when you re-install DUN. If you do not delete
the original key, re-installing DUN does not correct the
bad key value.
