How do I fix IE so that the "open in new window" function will work?
When I click links that are supposed to make a window pop up, those
do not work either.

TI,

A few things to try...

Those pop-up windows are often controlled by scripting code.

First make sure you do not have some utility that is designed to suppress
pop-up ads/windows. Likewise, any custom security you configure in the
Internet Options Control panel to suppress scripts may affect this behavior.
Adjust settings or remove software as appropriate there.

There is a standard IE module called a "scripting engine". This runs web
page scripts. Latest version is here (about 1 Mb download but may be
language specific.)
http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/vbscript/scripting.asp

* A "standard" thing to try is the IE5 Repair Option if available... (this
will also check the scripting components noted above)

Repair may not be available for folks using Win98SE with IE5 build
5.00.2614.xxxx, Win2000 with IE build 5.00.2920.xxxx -or- WinME with build
5.50.4134.xxxx.
Based on the OE version of your post (5.00.2615.200) you probably have
Win98SE with the base IE version - in that case, an upgrade to IE5.01 SP1
would be recommended for latest security and functionality patches - it will
also re-activate the repair option (links & build notes below).

For the Repair option...
Control Panel -- Add-Remove Programs
Choose <Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x and Internet Tools>
a popup menu should appear with an option for
"Repair Internet Explorer"

When selecting the repair option, if the install files for IE5 are still
available locally (hard disk or CD) the system may self repair and advise you
to reboot, or a diagnostic screen may appear. In most cases, a change log is
written to your disk. For details see this KB article...
Description of the Internet Explorer Repair Tool
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q194/1/77.asp

* Upgrade info *
There are two current IE5 release versions...
... IE 5.01-SP1 == build number 5.00.31xx.xxxx
... IE 5.50-SP1 == build number 5.50.45xx.xxxx

Links to each should be on the 'Windows Update' site or you can try here
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/download/default.htm

For version current details, see the Knowledge Base... There may be some
exceptions and security patch variations but in general, this KB is 'well
maintained' and usually reflects current status.

Hope this helps. Repost any follow-up to the group as appropriate.

I tried all of the things listed in the previous
post but none worked. I did however get the right
click feature back after i downloaded and
installed the critical updates patch from
microsoft. It should be the first choice you have
while at the update section for win98 and version.
Hope that helps.
