Running XP Pro. Used uninstall from SP2 CD. Component & Overall removal
process at about 90%. See brief component message ". . .installing
files. .then Operation displays "Rolling back action: " Uninstall
process appears idle for about 3 minutes then a warning message is
displayed: "An MSI Failure has occurred: MSInstallProduct:1603"
Select OK to clear and uninstall process reports "updating uninstall. .
.finalizing . . .the uninstall was canceled successfully". Restarted
XP, unloaded background programs again, ran 2nd time from CD. Same
result. Restarted, etc. Removed SP2 CD , ran uninstall from Add/Remove.
Same result. Ran Clean Sweep (2002), selected the WP2002 program folder.
After completion, deleted the entire WP2002 program folder. Deleted
start menu shortcuts. Ran Norton WinDoctor. Carefully selected (took a
couple of hrs) only registry "errors" linked to WP2002 and selected
delete for each one or group of entries. On restart this AM, tested WP9
apps and they seem to be running OK. So. . .what's next, should I try to
install SP2. I don't really feel confident I've gotten everything -- I
mean Norton WinDoctor makes a lot of mistakes and I feel for anyone who
blindly accepts it's "solutions" , but that for another newsgroup. . .
Seriously, if anyone has a complete list of all registry deletes that
need to me made I'd like to see it. Better yet, COREL, how about a
registry scrubber. Lastly, just checked the event viewer logs. Some
interesting entries: there's several of these. This is from the last
uninstall attempt:

Source: MsiInstaller
Category: None
Type: Error Event ID: 11706
Description:
Product: WordPerfect Office 2002 Professional -- Error 1706.No valid
source could be found for product WordPerfect Office 2002 Professional.
The Windows Installer cannot continue.

This fits perfectly for that moment in the operation where the process
seemed to be looking for something to install, just before it went idle.
Suggestions please.

Since this post, I've done some more registry edits. Went in to all
sections with \software\corel\ and deleted any folder reference to "10"
as well as some individual key's pointing to 10 apps. As a result, when
I restarted and ran WinDoctor again, it picked up large number of
additional errors, mostly related to missing DLL files. I repaired with
deletion. Also found some 2002 references in C:\Documents and Settings\
[user names - administrator, my name, all users] application data and
deleted those as well. 9 is still working fine. Do to my present work
load, I can't take any risks with 2002 SP2 disrupting my system, so I'll
wait for any advice from the forum.
? - I noticed a reply by Parasite mentioning what I think was a switch
for no MSI. Please fill me in. Thanks.

Stu,
From what I read... the only "icky" error is that 1603: that's an MSI Fatal
error during installation....error...

BUT: generally...

WinDoctor or any of those Norton Utilities.... out, uninstall.... before
doing anything else (put them back on after WPO2002)

The stoppage at 90%... you didn't notice what was the last file accessed or
processed.... by chance?

That Error 1706... just means you installed under Admin (or one profile)
logged in as another... and whenh it tried to access the install source (in
this cased the CDROM), it wasn't there in the CD drive that is....

/nomsi... might, might not help... my bet is on one of the Norton utilities
"hooking" something on the install....

Could always, do a SafeMode install (Copy the Corel folder from the CDROM to
a hard disk folder, reboot the system in SafeMode and run Setup32.exe from
hard disk to hardisk)....... SafeMode should bypass *most* of the Norton
utilities TSRs and pre-launched stuff.... you could go either way (uninstall
the NU stuff, install WPO2002 SP2... the re-install the NU or SafeMode hard
disk install.... same amount of time spent.).

What is the /nomsi switch? Is it used with SP2 setup or some other
application or process? The error I received was on trying to uninstall
2002. Since I'm not sure I got every last bit of it off my system, is it
wise to try to run the SP2 installation?

At 90%, just before going idle, the uninstall operation reported
"Preparing to install files", then "Rolling back action: "
as in there's nothing specified after the colon. Since it just goes idle
for at least 3 minutes before the MSI error dialog, I'm thinking the
fatal error is essentially a time-out. Same scenario, whether SP2 CD in
the drive and using CD uninstaller, or running from XP add/remove.

Users - I'm the only one and am also the administrator. If I try to log
on as "administrator", it says I already am logged on.
Processes / Apps - I was pretty careful to disable all apps, but XP runs
a lot of processes. If I attempt SP2 I'll probably use safe mode.

Any further suggestions?

Stu,

Why are you uninstalling in the first place?

/nomsi.... command line switch that you add to Setup32.exe (WPO2002 install
engine).. that bypasses the MSI tables and uses the plain jane Corel Setup
Wizard (install engine).

SP2.. the download: Can't be used with the download
or the WPO2002 SP2 CD? can be used with WPO2002 pre SP2 and SP2 integrated

Any thoughts to removing the NU (Norton Utilities)?

SafeMode good if you have the dowload version... not so good if you have the
WPO2002 SP2... don't forget, Win XP has MSConfig.... which will also allow
you to remove anything running on StartUp..(NU)

First suggestion: leave everything as is for WPO2002, use MSConfig and
disable all you can (NU).... then test and make sure that WP10 launches and
runs (and prints)... then reboot, then patch...

WP10 SP2 is now running under XP Pro. Here's all the gory details:
After determining that there were still many registry references to my
original installation of WP10 Pro, I continued to try variations of
re-running the uninstall routine. Tried it with the original 2002 Pro
CD, using XP remove, with original CD in the drive, etc. All attempts
fail at the same mentioned point. "copying new files" is the exact phrasing.

Since the CD drive letter had changed since original WP install, I
searched the registry and edited all instances of references to the old
drive letter -- not just for Corel programs -- . This had no effect. But
it's clear to me that any version of uninstall is looking for files
that aren't there.

Decided to just go for it and install SP2 from CD. The installation
failed and the very beginning, just as it reports updating the
S___folder (can't remember, didn't write it down). Followed directions
to try again. Selected recovery installation. That failed immediately as
before. Started XP in safe mode. Same results whether recovery, update
or custom install.

[light bulb switches on] The 1st uninstall failure occurred using
uninstall from the new SP2 CD. Decided to reinstall the original
version. Disabled Norton stuff in the tray, ended CTFMON process in task
manager. I chose to update the existing installation. All went OK.
Before restarting, I applied all 3 pre-SP2 patches/hotfixes. Restarted,
disabled the usual suspects, ran uninstall from XP add/remove--which
just starts Corel's uninstaller. Uninstalled 2002 Pro with no problems
[Yipee!]. Restarted, did a quick check of my WP9 programs, they seem
ok, but need more testing.

Ran successful (sort offered further) install of SP2. Opened WP tried to
print a one page doc - locked up. Lock up was eventually solved by
running printserver100.exe in advance of WP. Further details are in
thread "print errors, etc., etc. "

But. . .after all this, went back to check my WP9 apps. WP9 won't run,
message is that the program is not installed correctly. Didn't even
bother checking the other apps (pro version). Got out SP4 CD and ran
setup in update mode. So far, WP9 now runs and prints. Haven't checked
all 2000 Pro apps yet.

Based on the initial lack of performance I'm still seeing, I will most
likely opt for WP9, particularly for short documents. So for my
purposes, did I waste my money -- ABSOLUTELY! But that hard cash has
been just a drop in the bucket in terms of the true cost to my time and
productivity this horrendous fiasco of an "upgrade" this has been. [WHAT
A JOKE. . .CALLING THIS PIECE OF JUNK AN UPGRADE!] To those who will say
. . ."but look, you did get it working. . .", I say that's not enough. I
am so furious at Corel for taking my loyalty and abusing it so
blatantly. I don't believe for a moment, that parties at Corel don't
know exactly what's been wrong and still is wrong with what they
continue to sell; as if it was the greatest upgrade the world of
computer applications has ever seen. If I had the time and resources, I
absolutely would start a class action lawsuit against Corel. I JUST
CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!

Thank you to all those in these forums, who have contributed directly or
indirectly to helping me solve problems, or at least to let me know, I'm
not the only one pulling my hair out. To the parties who had the nerve
to market this junk, someday, you will be sorry for what you have done
to a once great product. You will never get any business from me ever
again! The companies I work with who are considering your products won't
ge giving Corel a second thought, by the time I finish letting them know
what "you" are really all about. If "you" had any honor, you would send
all of us a personally written apology along with copies of your letters
of resignation. But you won't, because you are all truly nothing but scum!

Hi, Parasite!

<<:::::As for any action.... re-read your lisence agreement... and then also

keep in mind, many, many of us don't have your problems, and have had nothing
good experiences with this release... Have a fun trip to the MS side.>>

I'm sorry, but the poster (Stu Sigmond) has had a terrible time with the version
of WPO2002 that he paid money to use. He was here on these technical support
newsgroups seeking help with the issues that arose with his attempt to install
SP2 and, like so many people, experienced one pitfall after the next in
attempting to do so before finally getting it installed, only to conclude:

<<:::::Based on the initial lack of performance I'm still seeing, I will most

likely opt for WP9, particularly for short documents.>>

Stu said not a thing about Microsoft Word -- the two words that, from reading
your many messages, you obviously hate -- but says he'll likely "opt for WP9," a
Corel product, but even if he should have decided to move to Word, did you not
take the time to read his message, and the time and effort he invested in trying
to install WPO2002 *and* to refresh his WPO2000 install? Most of us work for
our money and are jealous about how and on what we spend it and our time, and
clearly many WP users, who have themselves purchased the WPO2002 upgrade were
very disappointed with the pre-SP2 release and are only now enjoying the new
release after installing SP2 some 6+ months after they bought it and the truth
is, the road to SP2 has been rocky for *many* WP users, with the Upgrade Key,
CRC and BDE issues, and so other things that have occurred along the way!

If you were to reread his message, you would note that Stu didn't say a thing
affirmatively about filing a class action against Corel; what he stated was
understandably an expression of his disappointment with Corel for its decision
to release a still-buggy-but-not-as-buggy-as-before product. And what did you
mean by writing:

<<:::::We also told you to get rid of the Norton utilities for the install

process, as they are known to cause install problem... you seem stuck on keeping

them... shame, [you're] not willing to even try the free information.... tsk,
tsk>>

If you really read Stu's message, among the things he stated was this:

<<:::::Followed directions to try again. Selected recovery installation. That

failed immediately as before. Started XP in safe mode. Same results whether

recovery, update or custom install.... **Disabled Norton stuff in the tray,**
ended CTFMON process in task manager. (Emphasis added)>>

Isn't what he says here *exactly* the kind of advice he received here? Why you
would speak to him with such condescension only you know, but I don't believe
anyone coming here to these NGs for technical support for help is deserving of
such treatment; I mean, the man attempted to apply what suggestions he received
here and told us what resulted from his doing so.

The fact that many of us do not now have problems or may have overcome what
problems we may have had with WPO2002 is not going to be of comfort to anyone
(like Stu), who happens to be one of the people that has only overcome his
installation problem, but 'still sees an initial lack of performance.'

I would ask you to please remember that we should be here on this particular NG
to help fellow WP users in whatever way we can in resolving what issues may have
arisen in connection with their installation and WPO2002, not to berate them in
any way or to exude whatever sarcasm we may be able to muster because they dare
to come here seeking help, and to ask you to please refrain from such
unprofessional conduct on this or on any of the technical support newsgroups. I
find that what you are doing here and have been doing for some time on these
technical support NGs is tantamount to flaming users because they come to the
very place Corel has set up for WP users to receive technical support from other
WP users. I don't think snide remarks, insults and innuendo is appropriate for
the technical support groups, and I also think you owe Stu an apology for doing
so.

Peace

Thank you,
The fact is, I hold Corel products up to a higher standard than other
products which many of you think are from the enemy. That enemy just
gave us a great OS with XP. As I see it, the bar is getting unacceptably
low. I will continue to be furious with Corel until I see a change. I
don't care if it takes SP5, when the program works right, I will use it.
In hindsight, I wish I hadn't upgraded WP 9 continues to work great
under XP. But I did spend the money, time and more effort than should be
expected from a normal user, so now I'm ranting for Corel to get this
version right. I can't wait for SP3--and we all know it's coming.

Does it make sense to only use Corel products, when the office one works
for is solidly MS? No. Does it make sense to get to bent out shape about
loyalty to a particular product when there are very useable features in
some MS products? No. I hate MS Word, and only rarely use; but I love
Excel (I also love Quattro). I have the slickest front end for faxing
that I developed starting with Paradox 5 and still use exclusively.
Visio 2002 is integral to my work. There is no comparable Corel product.
[So Shoot Me!] What I am hung up with, is when a product we rely on is
"upgraded" and so many users, particularly me, are just getting burned.
I strongly disagree that the larger percentage of users are trouble
free. Just look at the overwhelming content of the postings.

One last thing, I did check running processes for Norton products and
there was nothing. I closed NAV and I closed Firewall. I don't run any
other Norton stuff automatically. It should be clear from the details
provided that Norton had nothing to do with any of this. It was most
likely something that changed during the XP upgrade and/or combined
with trying to use the SP2 uninstaller 1st, instead of just doing a
normal uninstall. Once I reinstalled the original 2002, and performed a
normal uninstall, things proceeded normally. Are you [Parasite] going to
tell me that needing to have Printserver100.exe running as a startup or
service is because I have Norton products on my PC? I don't think so.
The fact that WP9 SP4 broke after 2002 install and the install had to be
refreshed: I supposed that's also because I had no Norton processes
running, but the files exist on my PC and somehow interacted with 2002
and damaged some file in WP9? I don't think so.

A newly discovered 2002 issue, is probably related to having to
reinstall WP9 SP4: Launching Corel Central apps indicates I'm running a
combination of the 2 versions. The right side pop-up calendar indicates
it's version 9. The individual apps indicate version 10. The version 10
Calendar has got serious display problems with not all months
displaying. All help files indicate version 9. I don't use CC much, but
I plan to uninstall it by re-running SP4 and then update SP2 install
one more time. Then let's see if WP 9 gets broke again. Hey, if it
will make your day, I'll even uninstall all my Norton stuff. -- Just not
today.

Lastly, I'm too upset with Corel to be annoyed with Parasite's comments.
But I do appreciate you understanding and adding some rationality to my
position. Thanks again.

FWIW, I had this same problem, I *do* believe it is a Norton-related
problem. I installed using /NOMSI to get past it, another option you
probably didn't try.

I'm pretty sure that file was SHELLWP.DLL (which gets put in the windows

And then again, others do.
I have recently installed 2002, which did not work, so I uninstalled Suite
8, which did. There was obviously a conflict, but my needs to merge are
hardly met by the tedious loading of the address book in 2002.

I have been trying to uninstall 2002 since last Thursday. The message I get
is An MSI failure has occured. MSIinstallproduct: 1603

The last piece mentioned on the uninstall progress bar is shortcuts folder.

I had assumed that 2002 would be an improvement. I have been a corel user
since the mid 1980's - I will probably continue to use Suite 8, but I agree
that the service to a very loyal group of customers is less than acceptable.
Reading through the Corel Central newsgroup I note that the problems I am
having with the address book (wouldn't open, couldn't import, etc) are very
common. Obvously there is a flaw Corel has not bothered to address.

What I need to know now is hot to get the thing off my computer.
