I am the writer of the above song and have read with interest the
numerous
postings regarding it here. This song was composed by me in Coventry
in
1969 and first performed by Sean Cannon, later of the Dubliners, in
his
solo gigs in the UK.
No other writer or artist had any part in the
composition of this song
although many have tried to claim a part in it,
although I often mention
Gerard Hoffnung's wonderful address to the Oxford
Union my father had the
story in a joke book from 1918 when it was a widely
performed music hall
sketch.
This song has been under exclusive copywright
to me with the Performing
Rights Society in London since 1975 under it's
original title THE SICK
NOTE, also PADDY AND THE BARRELL, WHY PADDYS NOT AT
WORK TODAY, THE
BRICKLAYERS SONG, and MURPHY AND THE BRICKS.
I have only
recently become aware of the numerous other alternative titles
under which
this song has been recorded DEAR BOSS etc, but whatever the
title the song is
the same.
I have details of nearly 150 recordings of this song worldwide and
have
traced royalty payments from various record companies to MCPS in
London
who have forwarded them to the publisher of the song, not one cent
of
this money has been paid to me in the last 13 years.
No prizes for
guessing the publisher, yes CELTIC MUSIC/ DAVE BULMER.
My contract with this
publisher has now been terminated although my
request for a letter of
relinquishment has so far been ignored by them,
as is the normal practice of
this company.
I have gathered compelling evidence of fraud and negligence,
together
with several instances of breach of contract on the part of
CELTIC
MUSIC/ DAVE BULMER/ NEIL SHARPLEY, with regard to this song and
will
shortly commence proceedings against them in the UK courts, I
should
mention that I now live in Germany.
