sbay.org discussing incorporation

are in discussion about possibly incorporating as a California non-profit
corporation. There have been accumulating reasons to consider this over
the past few years, ranging from selection of leaders to making agreements
for access to radio towers for the SBAY Wireless Network. We're just
plainly getting into enough projects that it's time to consider
incorporating the organization. The intent is to address these issues
while keeping the volunteer character of the organization as close to
the same as possible.
The sbay.org organization was formed in 1993 by the creators of the sbay
newsgroups for coordination of the newsgroups and for other amateur, hobby
or experimental communications projects. Social gatherings for Silicon
Valley communications hobbyists and professionals have also been a feature
of the organization. Since part of sbay.org's purpose is to manage the
sbay newsgroups, that's why this announcement is being posted here. It is
currently organized as an unincorporated association.
This will not change the charters of any of the sbay newsgroups. It may
affect the procedures for creating or removing sbay newsgroups and how
the charters are enforced (i.e. anti-spam efforts.) Major decisions in
those areas may shift to the yet-to-be-formed Board of Directors. The
By-laws governing the organization and such decisions have not yet been
written. (All of sbay.org's current policies are posted on the web site.)
We have a mail list for the incorporation discussion. It's fair to warn
everyone that we'll be picky about only allowing current and previous
sbay.org participants on the list, and folks from other organizations that
we've worked with. (i.e. comments about the newsgroups should just be
posted on the newsgroups - this mail list is not a forum for that.) If
you're not sure that we'll know who you are, please send an e-mail
introducing yourself and explaining why you're interested at the same
time as you request to subscribe.
