I have been watching...
a) http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52557 move towards using
real-names in the HTML forms and using only the numeric userid (no email
address) in the HTML source.
b) http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=120030 which wants to
prevent the use of email addresses by spammers.
and
c) http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=146162 which permits
users to be specified by Either email address or Real Name.
as well as the steady stream of postings here from people having trouble
with Sendmail.
I think that these 3 need a common solution which seems to be a merge of
bug 52557 (even when dropdown is disabled) and bug 146162 supplemented
by some facility that permits a logged-in user to send mail to another
user.
The mail facility could be implemented as a web-based compose page or a
(LOGGED) facility that let's a logged-in user generate a mailto link for
another user. For example, the "send email to bug owners" link could
either lead to a mail composition window that never reveals the
addresses or could lead to a page with a mailto link with the real
addresses. (Ordinarily, I would prefer the latter, but my employer uses
Lotus Notes for email and the former would be a lot less trouble)
If someone wants to take on the mail composition question, I'd suggest
using Mail::Sendmail (which I have tried and works well) or Mail::Sender
(which looks good, particularly for attachments, but no firsthand
review) and avoid all the sendmail-specifics and local mail processing
altogether.
I hate web-based compose pages. I have a lovely email program which has
lots of great facilities for email, and I want to use it for sending
email. :-)
The other thing you are saying is that email addresses and mailto:s
should be removed from the UI (or make it so you have to follow some
link to generate them.) I think that would be a sad backwards step in
usability. Also, users are not forced to give Real Names, which would be
the only other identifier usable in the UI. And they are non-unique as well.
Email addresses are a useful unique identifier for Bugzilla accounts,
understandable by humans. I'd hate to see them replaced by "User ID 34
(no realname given)" or fifty "Fred"s.

[tm 83258] <-- my userid (could i please find out my userid? :) )
p.s. if we put userid in brackets then it could be even fun, because it
would look so mutch like bugs ;)

Tieto Konts has changed name to TietoEnator Financial Solutions
Like I said, it would be a usability regression for Bugzilla if I had to
refer to paranoid people as "user 34346", because they didn't supply a
real name and hid their email address.
If you have a spam problem from Bugzilla, set up a webmail account.

By fun, you of course mean "confusing." :-)
