My cat went for a walk over my keyboard this evening, and I lost my main
menu (O7.11). I have searched for any setting in Preferences and in
opera7.ini that would seem to control this, but cannot find anything that
seems to work. How do I get that back again? Pages do load, as usual, in
the MDI manner, within a single Opera programme window, and as far as I can
see, the only difference is I no longer have the window _[]X trio, nor the
usual "File Edit ... Help" choices. Merely the Main bar, status bar, etc.
Any help will be appreciated!

Gee, I'd keep your cat away from your computer. He's a hacker. Next time
you'll see money disappearing from your bank account. ;)

Check out your operadef6.ini and search for the string Show Menu = 0.
Change the 0 to 1, and you should be set. Also you may need to look into
your opera6.ini.

Good luck and keep the cybermonster under control!

Kitten! The older cats are well trained, but this one still needs work!

Many thanks, but I did a search for all opera*ini files and none of them
have a "show menu" entry at all! (there are two opera6.ini files, one in
the main opera directory, one in a profiles directory, and there is
operadef6.ini). So that isn't the issue. I don't suppose you have any
other ideas?

So if you don't have any "Show menu" entry now, did you try *adding* one? I
mean, did you try forcing proper behavior (of Opera, not your cat) by
adding Show Menu=1 in the [User Prefs] section of .../profile/opera6.ini?

Putting it in your own profile ini should override any contradictory
setting elsewhere.

I've seen this once after changing the 'Toolbars and menus' prefs
repeatedly. I tried removing everything that looked like 'menu' in
opera6.ini. IIRC, there was a line like 'Menubar alignment=0' that sneaked
into my ini file.

I wouldn't necessarily blame your cat, because the *exact* same thing
happened to my 07.11 tonight; (*total* disappearance of the menu bar
with tool bar taking it's position). This never happened with earlier
versions of Opera, but it sure has now. After attempts to trace a fix
while looking into suggestions, I opted for a fresh install in a new
7.11 directory next to Opera7, then importing Operadef6.adr from the
'menuless' version which originally wasn't a fresh install but an
overwrite.

Maybe the solution's bone-head simple, but I couldn't find it. I
looked for menu=0 in the ini's but found ziltch.

Should be interesting to see if others have, or will experience this
'menu' disappearing act in 07.11. GUI's slightly richer with the fresh
install, and download speed appears faster than the overwrite 'now
menuless' version. Could be a crash/bug of vast Opera proportions---I
dunno. Weird...

The same happened to a colleague of mine today (Opera 7.11 b2880), but
after reading Rijk's post I deleted the line "Menubar alignment=0" from his
opera6.ini and it worked again!

Removing 'Menubar alignment=0' repaired the menu here.

I did try that actually, without success - but I see from other posts here
that this is a now-common problem, with a solution that worked for me as
well: delete a line 'Menubar alignment=0' in the ini file. (So I guess I
owe my kitten an apology - though he really does have to be trained not to
hunt for mice next to my keyboard, regardless of how likely a place that is
to find one!)

<g> Maybe you should teach your mouse to bark ;-)

Yes. The new CTRL+F11 implementation may be broken. I could not get
out of "hide" MenuBar mode and had (after trying several values to no
effect) to remove the "Menubar alignment=" line from profile\opera6.ini

If this is confirmed, we need a bug filing.
