Noted Urdu poet Kaifi Azmi passes away

PTI [ FRIDAY, MAY 10, 2002 10:21:39 AM ]

MUMBAI: Renowned Urdu writer Kaifi Azmi, who had been hospitalised for asthma,
passed away on Friday.

He died at 6.40 am following cardiac and respiratory infection, Dr J P Sharma,
superintendent of the Jaslok hospital , said.

Kaifi, father of actress and Rajya Sabha member Shabana Azmi, was admitted on
March 28 for asthma and chest infection and was in ICU till Thursday. He was
also suffering from ischemic heart disease and cerebro-vascular disease, Sharma
said.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh had visited him on Thursday.

Azmi, who mesmerised readers with his poems filled with passion and rebellion
against an unjust system, was conferred the prestigious Sahitya Akademi
fellowship for his eminence as an Urdu poet and "his exceptional contribution to
Indian literature" here last month.

The citation was accepted by the poet's wife Shaukat Ali, as he was unable to
attend the function because he was ill.

Kaifi was only the second Urdu poet to be elected the fellow of the Akademi,
whose current membership is restricted to just 21 writers.

Ignoring inaccurate remarks like the following one that appeared on Rediff:

"Filmmaker Guru Dutt had Azmi pen the lyrics of almost all his films"

what was Kaifi's collaboration with other MD's in Hindi films?

I would think, being a member of IPTA and the Communist Party, would have made
it more likely that he and Salil(who too was a member of both) would work
together. However I am hard pressed to come up with any instance right now
where they have worked together.

We know he has worked with SDB, MM, Khayyam. What about others, such as Naushad,
Vasant Desai, Chitragupt, S-J etc?

One of my favorite Kaifi Azmi nazms ...

tum parishaaN na ho, baab-e-karm va na karo
aur kuch der pukaruNga chala jaaunga
isi kuuchae mein jahan chaand uga karte the
shab-e-tareek guzaaruN ga, chala jauNga

raasta bhul gaya ya yahaN manzil hai meri
koi laaya hai ya khud aaya huN maloom nahin

mai bhi kuch laaya hun, kya laaya maloom nahin

[These next 4 lines are my favorite !]
yun to jo kuch tha mere paas main sab bech aaya
kahin inaam mila, aur kahin keemat bhi nahin
kuch tumhare liye aankhoN mein chupa rakha hai
dek lo aur na dekho to shikaayat bhi nahin

phir bi ik raat mein sau tarh ke moD aate hain
kaash tumko kabhi tanhaaee ka ihsaas na ho
kaash aisa na ho GHaerae rahe duniya tumko

I have a few strong memories of this legend... I'll begin with the first
instance [~1975] when I heard /watched Begum Akhtar's rendition on
Doordarshan [immeditaely after Kaifi's recitation] of the following ghazal
he wrote in Moscow circa September 1974:

mai.N Dhoo.NDtaa hoo.N jisay vo jahaa.N nahii.N miltaa
nayii zamiin nayaa aasmaa.N nahii.N miltaa

nayii zamiin nayaa aasmaa.N bhii mil jaaye
naye bashar kaa kahii.N kuchh nishaa.N nahii.N miltaa

vo teygh mil gayii jis_se huaa hai qatl meraa
kisii ke haaTh kaa us par nishaa.N nahii.N miltaa

vo meraa gaa.Nv hai, vo mere gaa.Nv ke choolhay
ke jinmei.N sholay to sholay, dhuaa.N nahii.N miltaa

jo ik khudaa nahii.N miltaa to itnaa maatam kyaa
yahaa.N to koyii meraa hamzabaa.N nahii.N miltaa

khaD.aa hoo.N kabse mai.N chehro.N ke aik jangal mei.N
tumhaare chehre kaa kuchh bhii yahaa.N nahii.N miltaa

Notes:

1. Begum A. did not sing the 4th shayr.
2. Meanings of some uncommon words:

bashar=human, maanav, insaan
tayg=sword, talwar
hamzabaa.N=one who speaks the same language [is 'on the same page'] [thinks
alike]

There was a brief series on RMIM three years ago, which
was a tribute to Kaifi Azmi's contributions to film lyrics.
It was conducted by Vandana Venkatesan. May I express the
hope that it would be a good moment for Vandana to make
a comeback with a tribute post?

Nita had placed the posts from the series on the net:

Some more poetry of his can also be found here, again

> tum parishaaN na ho, baab-e-karm va na karo (entitled : nazraanaa)

great selection, indeed a beautiful nazm, and it also happens to be one of
my favourite nazm written by him
few of my favourite songs from him are:

- dekhii zamaane kii yaarii (kaaghaz ke phool)
- mai.n ye soch kar uske dar se uThha thaa.. (haqiiqat) (the nazm is
entitled: pashemani)
- kar chale ham fidaa (haqiiqat)
- jaane kyaa Dhuu.nDhatii rahtii hai.n ye aankhe.n (Shola aur Shabnam)
- songs from Arth... (tum itna jo, jhuki jhuki sii... )

there are so many beautiful "nazme.n" that he wrote.. maybe I will post one
later.. but they seem more appropriate for ALUP..
some of my favourite ones are entitled:

pahala salaam
aavaaraa sajde
-suna karo merii jaan, inse unse afsaane
tajdeed
tum
tasavvur (its BEAUTIFUL)
ahtiyaat
Ek Bosa

God Bless his soul.

Toote Khilone was directed by Kaifi's long time associate Chetan Anand
's son Ketan.

nazm 'Aurat' for a song(Uth Meri Jaan)...Kaifi 's ode to womankind

Could be in all the three cases above Kaifi merely lent his earlier
works to Mahesh Bhatt or Mahesh sought permission and they were not
actual collaborations of Kaifi-Chetan Anand-MM kind.

and KA for a Rajesh Khanna starrer song..........Ye raat hai pyasi
pyasi si, the film whose name I could not recall was based on a
Sharatchandra story ,Sharmila Tagore and Sarika as a child actor.

Kaifi was also originally slated to work with KA on 'Saraswati
Chandra' but KA insisted on Indivar as the lyricist as they though the
lyrics demanded a greater Hindi quotient than Urdu, whatever is that
supposed to mean.

Raghunath Seth in 'Yeh Najdeekiyaan'- at least the title song in
Anuradha P's voice.

This one is titled 'andeshe' [=aashankaaye.N, doubts, worries,
uncertainties]... variations of the last four stanzas were attached to a new
'mukhD.aa' and used in 1964 by Madan Mohan in Chetan Anand's Haqeeqat and
sung by 4 male singers [Bhupinder, Rafi, Talat & Manna Dey]:

rooh bechain hai, ik dil kii aziiyat kyaa hai?
dil hii sholaa hai, to ye soz-e-mohabbat kyaa hai?
vo mujhe bhool gayii iskii shikaayat kyaa hai?
ranj to ye hai ke ro-roke bhulaayaa hogaa

vo kahaa.N, aur kahaa.N kaahif-e-gham sozish-e-jaa.N
uskii rangiin nazar aur nuqoosh-e-hirmaa.N
uskaa ehsaas-e-latiif aur shikast-e-armaa.N
taanaazan aik zamaanaa nazar aayaa hogaa

jhuk gayii hogii jawaa.N-saal umango.N kii jabii.N
miT gayii hogii lalak, Doob gayaa hogaa yaqii.N
chhaa gayaa hogaa dhuaa.N, ghoom gayii hogii zamii.N

usne ghabraake nazar laaKh bachaayii hogii

[hoke majboor mujhe usne bhulaayaa hogaa
zeher chup karke davaa jaan ke Khaayaa hogaa
hoke majboor mujhe...]

Hi Kaamraan ji,
Khuda aapka iqbaal buland rakhe.

Whenever I think of Kaifi saheb, I think of this nazm (and maybe,
dhadakate dil kii tamanna). As soon as I heard of his sad demise, I
thought of this and it had been buzzing in my head ever since. I took
out my diary in which it is written, but delayed posting thinking it is
long, so will post on sunday.

But then I opened my mailbox, and here it is. Aap to binaa kahe man kii
baat poori kar dete hain. thanks a squillion, again and again.

There are four replies till now but no one mentioned one aspect. It
suggests that you and readers are not aware of these additional stanzas.

If you were not aware, lo and behold.

enjoy! Some more stanza. A total three more stanzas. A bonus.

These are equally beautiful by the great pen of the great person. And
you will see the concept developing like a moon showing phases day by
day till it is full. and then you find smooth transition to "> phir bi

ik raat mein sau tarh ke moD aate hain"

if anybody needs english translations, please ask. I will be happy to
do.

the following line is the haasil-e-gazal. I have spoken this line to
several of my friends, and after hearing just this line, they
immediately reach the deep emotional state that one reaches after
reading the entire nazm. Most of them wanted to read entire nazm.

Is it same as "kabhi kisii ko muqammal jaha.n nahi.n milata" as in
aahista, aahista? could someone please post that one also in entirety.
It was two solo by bhupendra and asha. music by khayaam saheb.

If that film was also by Kaifi saheb, it had beautiful "nazar se phuul
chunatii hai nazar, aahista, aahista". might be a filmy ishtyle song,
but lyrics were no doubt superb.

ha.nsate zakhm's "hai tere saath meri wafa" also had so deep lyrics.

hai tere saath meri wafa, mai.n nahi.n to kya
zi.nda rahegaa pyaar mera, mai.n nahi.n to kya

seene me.n dil ke saath tamanna jalaaye ja
ye raat jaagane kii hai shamme jalaaye ja
tuu jashn zindagii ka manaa, mai.n nahi.n to kya

kuchh dhadakano.n ka zikr ho, kuchh dil kii baat ho
mumkin hai isake baad, na din ho na raat ho
mere liye na ashq baha, mai.n nahi.n to kya

is there another stanza?

A brief background on Kaifi: complete, real name is Sayyad Atahar Hussain...
born 1918 in AazamgaD. [U.P.]... hence 'Azmi'... schooled in a madarsaa to
learn Farsi and Arabii... started writing as a late-teen... initial content
was primarily romantic... gradually got exposed to the oppression under
foreign rule... joined the Communist Party and wrote a bunch of politically
aware stuff... first published book of poetry [1944] is titled 'Jhankaar'...
second compilation 1947 titled 'Aakhir-e-Shab'... third book 1974 titled
'Aawaaraa Sajde'... he got the Sahitya Academy award on this last on...
recently had an English translation published by Penguin titled 'Selected
Poems / Kaifi Azmi' done in December 2000 by a journalist Pavan K Varma
[he's apparantly done Ghalib also].

So, back to the poetry... this one is titled 'mashviray' [Advice]... it is
written sort of like a dialogue: the first stanza is ostensibly said by
Piirii [Clergy], and the second one by 'shabaab' [Beauty]:

Piirii: "ye aandhee, ye toofaan, ye teyz dhaare
kaD.akte tamaashe, garajte nazaare
andherii fazaa, saans letaa samandar
na hamraah mish_al, na gardoo.N pe taare

musaafir KhaD.aa reh abhii jee ko maare"

shabaab: "usii kaa hai saahil, usii ke kagaare
talaatum mei.N pha.Nskar jo do haatH maare
andherii fazaa, saans letaa samandar
yu.Nhii sar paTaktay rahe.Nge ye dhaare

kahaa.N tak chalegaa kinaare-kinaare?"

fazaa=maahaul, vaataavaraNn, [also, Khulii jagah], environment
mish_al=mashaal, source of light
gardoo.N=aakaash, sky

saahil=kinaaraa, the river-bank, shore
talaatum=baaD., toofaan, flood, deluge

I don't mean to speak ill of one whom I respect a lot (and who
has recently passed ON), but as far as "ai beqaraar dil" goes,
I think the lyrics of the original Bengali song "o nobi re" (?)
fit far more "comfortably" in the tune than the Hindi words do.

Which Bengali version, I last heard a long time back ... I
recorded it some 15+ years ago from a DD broadcast of "phool
khile hain gulshan gulshan" featuring Hemant Kumar. That
tape is lost now (alas!) but AFAIR, the lyric goes something
like:

--

o nobi re!
eshchi kothaay <something> <something> <something> re!
bolo kothaay tumaar desh, tumaar <something-or-other> *esh

o nobi re!

--
Hemant Kumar translated this for Tabassum (the anchor) as
"o maa.Njhii, kahaa jaate ho tum ...
bolo kahaaN hai tumhaara desh / gaa.Nv" etc.

Perhaps it's time for me to request another Bengali song
lyric completion.

Andy, PDG, Pradeep, Nita? Anybody?

Most definitely not.

The Ahista Ahista ghazal, sung by Bhupinder, is a fine example of one
poet being inspired by the poetry of another. The maqta is by Shahryar
but the remainin ghazal is by Nida Fazli.

Another popular example of this is:

raftaa raftaa vo merii hastii kaa saamaa.N ho gaye
pahale jaan phir jaan-e-jaa.N phir jaan-e-jaanaa.N ho gaye

This sher is by Qamar Jalawi but was used by Tasleem Fazli for the
Mehdi Hassan ghazal in the Pakistani film Zeenat.

"hai tere saath merii vafaa mai.n nahii.n to kyaa" is not from Hanste
Zakhm. It is from Hindustan Ki Qasam. However, Hanste Zakhm did have
beautiful songs.

A great loss to both Urdu poetry and film songs!

People have gotten a nickname stuck to them for far less
egregious errors than this. I think UVR eminently deserves
to be forever referred to as "Nobi" after this prnounced
"knobby" to describe his hearing.

It's true Bengali pronunciation is weird--w becomes b,
y becomes j, anything related to s becomes sh, anthing goes
in consonants are compounded, a becomes different kinds of o,
and so on. But I doubt if even they would make a d into a b!
Hemant Kumar's enunciation is atrocious, it's true, just
listen to the way he butchers Jayadeva in "jai jagadeesh hare",
but that's because he had no idea what he was singing; I
don't think his enunciation is as bad as to make his d
sound like a b!

Please, the 'Dildaar' song is by Anand Bakshi. (I don't remember
it particularly well, but I am sure it is "pa.Dhoge" and "pa.Dh").

I know of only one film where L-P and Kaifi Azmi came togheter:
Hrishikesh Mukherjee's 'Satyakam' of late 1960s, with Dharmendra,
Sharmila, Ashok Kumar and a child artist whose name I don't know--
it was one of the better performances by a young boy in a Hindi
film.

Pairing with Kaifi Azmi did help lift the calibre of the soundtrack.
The film has only three songs and the two Lata solos are lovely--
comparable to the later output of Madan Mohan:

. abhii kyaa sunoge, sunaa to ha.Nsoge, ke hai geet adhuuraa,
taraanaa adhuuraa

. do din kii zi.ndagii, kaisii ye zi.ndagii
koii nahii.n ye jaane

I don't remember much of the third song, a group affair of some
P-statistical interest: something like "zi.ndgagii hai kyaa, bolo".
The singers are Mukesh, Kishore, and Mahendra Kapoor.

Interesting hypothesis, but going by what's there, things hardly worked
that way. Salil and Sahir never came together; Salil and Majrooh did, but
not frequently, and not for sociall oriented soundtracks; Salil and Prem
Dhawan only incidentally.

Why are you lazily shooting blanks instead of doing some work in your area
of interest? I suppose loRD's sheep are sheep, after all. :) It would have been
nice if some of the RDB phreaks had enough initiative to collect information--
if not recrodings--from what is perhaps the only two times the universes
of Kaifi Azmi and RDB intersected:

. The mid-70s documentary of Sukhdev 'Maa Ki Pukaar', which used as its base
the Buhpendra-Asha song "chhoD daaman meraa, o maa.N".

. The never-completed film 'Ankush'. Supposed to have had songs by Bhupendra
and Asha. Any recordings available?

Here's a tidbit from the obscure music directors front--this one as obscure
as they come. There was film in the early 70s called 'Mangetar', which
starred Nutan, Pradeep Kumar, and Deb Mukherjee. Looks like it was a Sain
family affiar, whoever they are: director was one Roopa Sain and the music
director was one Sudhir Sain. No memorable music came out of the latter's
collaboration with Kaifi Azmi, except for a decent Suman song:

. mai.n to tumhaarii siitaa, tuu raam ho na ho

the sole song, a qawwaali, in the movie was composed by AAKW)
Kaifi Azmi even wrote the dialogues as well as story and screenplay (with
Shama Zaidi) of the above mentioned feature film. A really nice movie,
starring Balraj Sahni, showing the effects of the partition on a muslim
family living in India.. (the setting of the movie is of course 1947). The
movie starts with a few lines recited in Kaifi Azmi's voice ... a voice that
sounds much younger compared to the one that can be heard in his album :

yeah...so I used to think, all these years (this song has AnandB
written all over it!) till I stumbled upon the phankar.com database

lyricist for this song as KA. However, I now searched for Kaifi Azmi's
filmography ( couple of sites seem to exist) and did not find this
movie mentioned anywhere (not that *these* databases are sacrosanct).
Relieved (moral: do not trust online databases).

> I don't remember much of the third song, a group affair of some

> P-statistical interest: something like "zi.ndgagii hai kyaa, bolo".

yeah...it's a lousy song which begins with (something like) Buappa
buappa bua bua. IIRC, they sing it inside a bus and, IIRC again, KK
playbacks for Johny Walker and Mukesh for Dharmendra.

He's worked with S-J in the 1973 film "Naina." He only has one song in the
movie though, a lovely Asha solo "hone lagi hai raat jawan, jaagte raho."
If I remember correctly, he's also worked with Usha Khanna for at least one
movie: Lakshmi. Like "Naina" it's also a multi-lyricist affair and I don't
know which songs were penned by Kaifi.

I believe you are talking about the film: Chhoti Bahu. This was a Rafi song:

ye raat hai pyaasi-pyaasi, pyaasi na guzar jaaye
tum baaho.n mein aa jao, ya waqt thahar jaaye

31. Tamanna/1990s? with Anu Malik

[Bollyvista.com incorrectly includes 5 out of 6 songs of the 1973 OP Ralhan
production 'Bandhe Haath' and also incorrectly attributes the music to Madan
Mohan... all 6 songs were penned by Majrooh and the MD was RDB]

Then Ashok has mentioned the following:

32. Satyakam/1969 with the following 3 songs for MDs LP:
- abhii kyaa sunoge, sunaa to ha.Nsoge, ke hai geet adhooraa, taraanaa

- mai.N to tumhaarii siitaa, tum raam ho na ho [Suman]
- kaisaa mai.N raam teraa [Rafi]

plus the incomplete Ankush, and the Sukhdev documentary 'Maa.N Ki Pukaar'

Just 33-odd hindi films with 18-odd MDs... 7 instances of Madan Mohan, 4 of
Khayyaam, 3 of Jaidev, 2 of SD Burman, 2 of Hemant Kumar, 2 of Ghulam
Mohammed, 2 of Babul, and 1 each of others.

It has been a rude shock to find that Kaifi's works for the Hindi Film space
were limited and more available in the 60s and later rather than the 50s
when he was obviously around to write for films... perhaps too preoccupied
and too sincerely devoted to the Party?

Binaca Geetmala's 1949-1959 series out on 12 CDs, for example, has *zero*
instances of Kaifi's work, as opposed to Shailendra, Rajinder Krishan,
Sahir, Majrooh & Hasrat who, in that descending order, have tremendous
representation.

Anyvez... the list above does miss some songs in some of the movies... for
instance, what's coming to mind right now is another gem from the 1961 Shama
with Ghulam Mohammed's music...

This 8 minutes and 28 seconds ghazal is composed as a Qawwali with Shamshad,
Suman & Chorus... the departure from tradition comes in the way this song is
arranged: only the portions sung by Shamshad and Chorus [the two of them
going quite hand-in-hand throughout the song] are made to sound like a
Qawwali [with prominant claps and dholak-duggi accompaniment]... and when
Suman sings her lines, which is the majority of the lyric here, the
percussion and the claps become much softer and the song becomes more or
less a completely non-Qawwali Ghulam Mohammed love-song, sort of like the
stuff in Pakeezah Rang-Barang.

[Prelude is a nice 44 second piece that sets the mood in traditional style
using harmonium, regular shehnai, taar-shehnai, sitar, jal-tarang and
taalis]

Shamshad: dil gayaa to gayaa, dilrubaa mil gayaa
dil gayaa to gayaa, dilrubaa mil gayaa
Chorus: dil gayaa to gayaa, dilrubaa mil gayaa
dil gayaa to gayaa, dilrubaa mil gayaa

[a brief 4 seconds of the shehnai's and perhaps a clarinet repeating the
melody of the above muKhD.aa]

Suman: aapkaa~ ~ ~ aasraa mil gayaa~
aapkaa~ ~ ~ aasraa mil gayaa~
pyaar ko bhii~ Khudaa mil gayaa, mil gayaa
dil gayaa to gayaa, dilrubaa mil gayaa
dil gayaa to gayaa, dilrubaa mil gayaa

[1st interlude is just 12 seconds made up of two phrases: the first, longer
one, dominated by jal-tarang + sitar, and the second, shorter one, dominated
by the harmonium]

Suman: chaahtaa tHaa ye nafrat kaa maaraa jahaa.N
aa~ ~ ~ ~

[an 8 second piece on the jal-tarang / sitar combo... sounds very
representative of Raag Bahar here... true?]

chaahtaa tHaa ye nafrat kaa maaraa jahaa.N
aa~ ~ ~ ~ ek hone na paaye.N zamii.N aasmaa.N
ek hone na paaye.N zamii.N aasmaa.N

roshnii kaa andhere mei.N ghuT jaaye dam
roshnii kaa andhere mei.N ghuT jaaye dam
chaa.Nd jaane na maane chakorii kaa gham

Shamshad: chaa.Nd jaane na maane chakorii kaa gham
Chorus: chaa.Nd jaane na maane chakorii kaa gham

Suman: O~ ~ ~ phool se door bha.Nvaraa paD.aa tilmilaaye
phool se door bha.Nvaraa paD.aa tilmil

shammaa tak uD. ke parwaanaa aane na paaye
shammaa tak uD. ke parwaanaa aane na paaye

Shamshad: O~ ~ ~ kar gayii kaam chupke se niichii nazar
ho gayii dil dhaD.akne kii dil ko Khabar
Chorus: ho gayii dil dhaD.akne kii dil ko Khabar

Suman: ho gayii dil dhaD.akne kii dil ko Khabar
dard ko ek dard-aashnaa mil gayaa
dard ko ek dard-aashnaa mil gayaa~
Chorus: dil gayaa to gayaa, dilrubaa mil gayaa
dil gayaa to gayaa, dilrubaa mil gayaa
dil gayaa to gayaa, dilrubaa mil gayaa

[2nd Interlude: another beautiful 12 seconds made up of two parts, this time
starting with a shorter harmonium-lead piece followed by a longer
jaltarang-lead piece]

Suman: leke armaano.N ke din, muraado.N kii raat

[brief shehnai piece elaborating the emotions of the line above]

gham kii duniyaa mei.N aayii Khushii kii baraat

[she sings 'baraat' instead of 'baaraat': perhaps as she learnt it from the
Punjabi MD :)]

[the same shehnai piece as above]

hotii jaatii hai.N aabaad tanhaayiaa.N
dil ke nazdeeq bajtii hai.N shehnayiaa.N

Shanshad: dil ke nazdeeq bajtii hai.N shehnayiaa.N
Chorus: dil ke nazdeeq bajtii hai.N shehnayiaa.N

[the Qawwaali-claps become more prominant here, as do the slaps on the
daayaa.N of the dholak]

Suman: Ho~ ~ ~ a.NKhD.iyo.N mei.N lehekne lage sau chaman
a.NKhD.iyo.N mei.N lehekne lage sau chaman
aarzoo_e.N banii jaa rahii hai.N dulhan

Shamshad:

[she's tired of repeating Suman's last lines in order to bring the oomph of
Qawwali into this song... so she has her own stuff here :))]
zindaghii le chalii hai nayii raah par
lag na jaaye kahii.N mujhko merii nazar
Chorus: lag na jaaye kahii.N mujhko merii nazar

Suman: lag na jaaye kahii.N mujhko merii nazar
tHaa jo qismat mei.N us_se sivaa milaa gayaa
tHaa jo qismat mei.N us_se sivaa milaa gayaa
Chorus: dil gayaa to gayaa, dilrubaa mil gayaa
dil gayaa to gayaa, dilrubaa mil gayaa
dil gayaa to gayaa, dilrubaa mil gayaa

[3rd Interlude is relatively long: 28 seconds in three parts, the first long
one lead by the harmonium, the other two short ones lead by the jaltarang
and the shehnais respectively]

Suman: aa ke mujhko sajaaye sa.Nwaare koyii

[a brief shehnai follow-up... same reason as above in the beginning of the
second stanza]

goo.Ndh de mehkii zulfo.N mei.N taare koyii

[shehnai... it's become shaadii kii shehnayiaa.N now]

reh na jaaye kamii husn kii shaan mei.N

[harmonium... we're not repeating the melody of the line this time... this
is a royal 4 second phrase]

Taa.Nk do chaa.Nd, koray ghariibaan mei.N

Chorus: Taa.Nk do chaa.Nd, koray ghariibaan mei.N
Taa.Nk do chaa.Nd, koray ghariibaan mei.N

[Suman does a short taan during the second singing of the above line by
Chorus]

ho.N tamannaye.N poorii to aaye sukoon
muskuraaye.N hatHelii pe meh.Ndii ke phool
muskuraaye.N hatHelii pe meh.Ndii ke phool

Shamshad: haar naazuk sii gardan mei.N, dil mei.N bahaar
haar naazuk sii gardan mei.N, dil mei.N bahaar
ho mubaarak muhobbat ko solaa-singaar
Chorus: ho mubaarak muhobbat ko solaa-singaar

[And it's Shamshad's turn to do a small taan... primarily the stuff one
hears innumerable times in traditional Qawwalis in the midst of a passionate
Chorus chant of a line]

Suman: ho mubaarak muhobbat ko solaa-singaar
dil gayaa to gayaa, dilrubaa mil gayaa
dil gayaa to gayaa, dilrubaa mil gayaa
Chorus: dil gayaa to gayaa, dilrubaa mil gayaa
dil gayaa to gayaa, dilrubaa mil gayaa

[the same 4 seconds of shehnai + taar-shehnai as in the beginning of the
song]

Suman: aapkaa~ ~ ~ aasraa mil gayaa~
aapkaa~ ~ ~ aasraa mil gayaa~
pyaar ko bhii~ Khudaa mil gayaa, mil gayaa
dil gayaa to gayaa, dilrubaa mil gayaa
Chorus: dil gayaa to gayaa, dilrubaa mil gayaa
dil gayaa to gayaa, dilrubaa mil gayaa

[Now we'll go into overdrive as is traditional at this stage of many a
Qawwali... the dholak heralds the climax with a 4 second piece with the
jaltarang]

Chorus: dil gayaa to gayaa, dilrubaa mil gayaa

[Suman's taan]

dil gayaa to gayaa, dilrubaa mil gayaa

[Shamshad's taan]

dil gayaa to gayaa, dilrubaa mil gayaa

[Suman's longer taan, immidiately followed by Shamshad's taan]

dil gayaa to gayaa, dilrubaa mil gayaa

[instruments bring us home]

Hi Guri,

Thanks for the lookout on the mistake in the database. We checked the
source, ended up being a data entry mistake, the source for the information
was an audio-cassette and the audio-cassette had Parwana and Bandhe Haath
together, by mistake, it was entered as Madan Mohan and Kaifi for both the
movies (for Parwana correctly, which has SIX songs penned by Kaifi Azmi and
for Bandhe Haath, incorrectly as the MD was RDB and Lyrics were by Majrooh
as you pointed out).

THe error has been forwarded to the appropriate person incharge of the
database and will be fixed. Thanks again

Ketan,

Kaifi worked with SDB in three movies. I don't have Geet Kosh handy, but
IIRC in addition to Kaagaz Ke Phool, he worked in Buzdil and Ek Ke Baad Ek.

Anu Malik.'aane wala kal ek sapna hai' from 'Phir teri kahaani yaad
aayi'.The other songs in this film were written by Qatil Shifai.
Don't know whether they were used with either Qltil or Kaifi 's
concent however.I heard Qatil on a PTV interview, a month before his
death , a Jaimala/Meri Pasand kind of programme where he showed Noor
Jehan's version of 'Tere dar pe Sanam chale aaye'( a different tume
from Sadhana Sargam/Sanu tandem from the film) with the comment -Jise
baad me Anu Malik ne chura liya.

Ek Daur woh bhi tha, ek daur ye bhi hai from Yeh
Najdeekiyan.(Raghunath Seth)
Here agin Vinod Pande and Ganesh Bihari Srivastava are credited with
the rest of the songs.
I think, there is another film with Bhappi, which could be Shart,Ketan
Anand's next as director after Toote Khilone.Since Shaban is another
constant apart from Bhappi and Ketan between the two films.
