Our first MAME cabinet is a Gauntlet. Or was, anyhow:
http://www.arcadeathome.com/images/craigc.jpg
Side art was left totally intact for that 'authentic' arcade feeling.
The screen is, like the original Gauntlet, not covered by a protective
glass. However, it is slightly smaller than the bezel, giving that
unique 'I couldn't find a monitor the right size' feel to it. The
marquee has been replaced with something far more valuable -- a MAME
logo. And finally, that pesky 4-player control pannel has been
replaced with two joysticks, and a ranbow of buttons, all on a marble
plate which just kind of sits funny on top. A disco ball dangles
precariously over the game, perhaps one day to smash the monitor or an
unsuspecting owner? A delightful example of MAME conversions of
classic game cabinets.
Next we a guy who created this one from scratch:
http://www.jclement.com/images/mamemachine.JPG
Actually, it looks pretty darn good to me. The door in front looks a
little suspect, but other than that, it looks like a very well
put-together home-made cabinet.
But his first attempt wasn't so good...
http://www.jclement.com/images/mame1.jpg
Recognize the cabinet? Probably not. It was a Track and Field at one
point in its life. And he was a true arcade collector. But he was
corrupted by the false pixels of MAME, and converted a classic into
this neo-arcade treasure. Probably the major feature of this cabinet
is that the entire monitor section has been hollowed out into a blank
space, which the undersized monitor and speakers rest inside. Almost
the Headless Horseman of arcade cabinets. This spooky modification of
a genuine cabinet should serve as a warning to those who are lured to
the dark side of arcade cabinetry.
Until next time!
Does he store dishes down below? :-)

funniest $100 I ever spent...then again one of the most horrifying
conversions ever as well...zaxxon is this wide *makes hand motions* which is
ok for one flight stick but a "street fighter" layout? nothing quite like
going for the fireball and elbowing the guy you're playing with....
2 hours after completing the panel:
Me: great we played wide variety in a minimal cabinet... now let's put the
zaxxon panel back on and head out
Miko: But ...
Miko: why?
Me: Don't you like Zaxxon?
Tony: yea, but this is even better why not just leave it so you can play
when we get back? why else would you build it?
Me: to prove I could... turn it off
Zaxxon cabinet: $75 I pac: $40 Metal replica of the zaxxon panel $17 The
looks on your friends faces as they watch you plug your zaxxon boards back
in: Fairly amusing
~Darien, ...it's ugly it's made from spare parts but at least I used the
arcade monitor....
...weird

But where did you find "Tron" sideart?
-Iain
I had a Tapper, Star Wars CP and a Galaga that some a**holes stole ALL the
electronics out of (including the WORKING 25" Amplifone). So I had all these
stupid computers sitting around and ended up asking questions here and in the
MAME group.
I got my ass ripped here.... OUCH!
