The only change I'd suggest for my entry is replacing the Newsgroups
FAQ link with a link to the Tolkien Meta-FAQ (just cut the final
"faq/" in the address).

> Also please answer these new questions...

Before I go on to my answers, may I propose another new question?
It's one where I think seeing our group list would actually be
directly helpful in discussions here (I'll go ahead and give my answer
below it):

- What are your thoughts on "canonical" texts:

(See my essay for details.) LotR and TH certainly; Letters, UT, and
late drafts in MR and WJ mostly; but I don't accept the "round world"
rewrite.

[You'd be welcome to link the word "essay" above to my Canonicity
essay at http://tolkien.slimy.com/essays/TolkParish.html, but you
certainly don't have to. If you want to rephrase the question, I'm
okay with that, too; I didn't want to force people to go along with
the whole idea of "canonicity" if they didn't want to, so I worded it
to make "I don't care" a perfectly good answer. :) ]

> - Favourite Tolkien-related website:

Mine first, and then the Encyclopedia of Arda, Ardalambion,
theonering.net, and probably others, in some order. :)

> - Favourite book/story by Tolkien:

LotR, of course, followed by UT and parts of many others.

> - Do you like the LotR movies?

Yes, quite a bit, though there are places where I wish they were
closer to the books.

The only additions I'd make is to actually put my
website address in, rather than direct folks to a sig

Did the Nazgul intend to get the Ring on Weathertop?: No. I don't believe
they can actually take it from a Bearer. If they found it lying on the
ground they could pick it up and return it to Sauron with no problem but if
it's in someones hand they must use other methods.

I dunno, I've always liked the thought of Glorifindel coming via Numenor,
though I find that far less likely.

Hmmm, well I specifically link to the Newsgroup FAQ on purpose,
becuase the _Who's Who_ is for the newsgroup, not for Tolkien, if you
get my meaning. With that in mind, would you still like me to change
it? What about the link on the glossary page, which is the same for
the same reason?

Interesting point. I am somewhat torn, when you put it that way. On
the one hand, the Meta-FAQ is just an improved and unified interface
to the five FAQs currently associated with the newsgroups (my
Newsgroups FAQ, the two Loos FAQs, Stan's Ring FAQ, and Stug's Letters
FAQ, plus essays posted to the newsgroups by Conrad and me). On the
other hand, the Meta-FAQ _doesn't_ link as prominently to the
information on netiquette and the newsgroups as the Newsgroups FAQ
itself does (in order to make it of more general interest, as you've
surmised).

For most purposes, I've encouraged people to link to the Meta-FAQ
because it correlates all of that information better than any single
FAQ does (and it's easier to find what you're looking for, because of
the more detailed categories and multiple listings of "cross-category"
questions). But for a newsgroup-specific link, it could go either
way. Argh. :)

Does anyone else out there have a preference? (Yes, I realize that
this is a totally unimportant issue. :) )

DOB: Dunno

SEX: Male

SPECIES: Cave Troll

NATIONALITY: Gray-Greenish

POSTING SINCE: ~February 2002

HEROES: Morgoth, Sauron, Mouth of Sauron

LIKES: Smashing things

DISLIKES: ELVES! Hobbits, wizards

EMAIL: No, M.A.L.E ( see above )

WEBSITE: Shelob's Lair? Is this a trick question?

Favourite Tolkien-related website: theonering.net

Favourite book/story by Tolkien: "The Black Gate Opens" chapter
of RotK, The Mouth/Gandalf debate is the best verbal exchange
Tolkien wrote. It cracks me up every time I read it. 'So you
have yet another of these imps with you!'

Do Balrogs have wings?: Some do, but none of them can fly, one
in Moria didn't have wings, but looked like he did

Do Elves have pointed ears?: Yes, to match their pointed heads

Did the ring speak on Mt Doom?: No, Frodo however was speaking
as near to being One with the Ring he had ever been. This final
bonding with the Ring there at Mt. Doom as he defended it from
Gollum was what pushed Frodo over the edge and caused him to
claim the Ring. If they'd killed Gollum earlier then Frodo wouldn't
have had that happen and he'd been able to destroy Ring himself.
Lesson: Kill your enemies first chance you get.

Did the Nazgul intend to get the Ring on Weathertop?: Yes, like
why in the world would they be there and do what they did other
wise? Getting the Ring was the sole reason Sauron sent them out,
they had no will to do but that.

Do the Nazgul carry their own rings?: No, too risky. Not needed.

Do Dwarves and Elves generally like each other?: No, can you blame
them? Filthy meddlesome elves.

Who killed the Witch-King, Merry or Eowyn?: Eowyn, The Witch King
could not be slain by the hand of a man, hobbits are humans.

Do Dwarven women have beards?: Yes. Trust me, this in an improvement.

Was the original Glorfindel the same Elf as the 3rd age Glorfindel in

LOTR?: Yes.

Do you like the LotR movies?: Well, FotR was very good, TTT wasn't.

NOTES: I'd like to personally thank Peter Jackson for seeing that
Cave Trolls as a group merited more than just the wounded foot
accorded them by Tolkien in the text version of LotR. The Cave
Troll battle in Moria, and the HUGE Cave Trolls at the Black Gate
are high-water marks in film history. We can only hope he continues
to use Cave Trolls in RotK for the Grond scene, and not those
hillybilly Mt. Trolls. Thank you.

I've always ignored these in the past... but...

DOB: 1963

SEX: M

SPECIES: Genetically Human

NATIONALITY: UK/Aus as it suits my argument

POSTING SINCE: At least August 1998 according to Google Groups

HEROES: In a literal sense, no one.

LIKES: motorbikes, computers, Tolkien.. in contextual order. Thus lying in bed
reading will make Tolkien more likeable that motorbikes, 1/2 thru a long left
sweeper the reverse would be true.

DISLIKES: Speeding Fines, Innacuracy, Overdue Creditors

EMAIL: anything at fahncahn.com will get to me

WEBSITE: www.fahncahn.com

Favourite Tolkien-related website: not sure.. don't go to them often

Favourite book/story by Tolkien: The Silmarillion

Do Balrogs have wings?: No. Its plain by reading the text they do not.

Do Elves have pointed ears?: This question assumes that Ear pointedness is a
digital state, either present or not. In reality their Ears are MORE pointed
than Human ones.

Did the ring speak on Mt Doom?: No, its figurative only..and if it did
communicate in some sense it would be more Frodos awareness of Saurons will
within the ring than a concious choice of the ring.

Did the Nazgul intend to get the Ring on Weathertop?: Yes, ideally still
attached to a Hobbit

Do the Nazgul carry their own rings?: Yeah... I guess so

Do Dwarves and Elves generally like each other?: Not really, too many
philosophical differences

Who killed the Witch-King, Merry or Eowyn?: Both. Technically both wounds
contributed to his death, either directly or indirectly. Eowyns was the killing
blow per se.

Do Dwarven women have beards?: Yes, and they're scratchy too

Was the original Glorfindel the same Elf as the 3rd age Glorfindel in

LOTR?: No. The idea that one elf was resurrected for good deeds and then sent
back is preposterous. Tolkien obviously made a mistake when he interpreted the
Red Books of Westmarch.
Perhaps if the New Improved Glorfindel had stormed Barad Dur in LOTR I might
have been swayed otherwise.

Do you like the LotR movies?: Yes... they aint perfect but they're the best
we'll get in the next 20 years.

To quote FotW, I even have a caste of movie opinions named after me,
"The Donalds:
Those who, like Donald Shepard [sic], have seen the movie several
times but can't seem to make up their minds about it. ;-)"

And it seems I overstated my joining date by a year. I first posted in

How do you know the balrog was male? Something you wish to share here?

[Quiet night down the local Evil Beings Tavern]

Scattered around the bar are the BALROG, SANTA, VOLDEMORT, AGENT SMITH
and SHINJI.

*doors open and then close again*

Balrog: Ah, the Nazgul's uncloaked. Lost the cloak off your back
again?

Nazgul: Yeah, it was a bad debt. Had to pawn my ring to a guy named
Sauron to cover it, but they wanted more. Apparently debt collectors
are hiring women and midgets these days. That whole "only a man can
kill thee" business just isn't worth what it used to, in these days of
equal opportunity and feminism.

NAZGUL looks at SANTA quizzically. SANTA senses the stare, looks
around, finally realises the company he's keeping gets up and leaves.

Balrog: Never mind him. He's just a bit put out that he got included
in this as a tyope.

Nazgul: Tyope?

Balrog: Long story, involving some group called TEUNC. Believe me when
I say you don't want to know, I wish I didn't know, and I don't think
even they really know.

Nazgul: Oh.

Shinji (interjecting): Why doesn't my father love me? What's going on?
Why doesn't anyone tell me anything?

Nazgul: Doesn't that kid ever shut up?

Balrog: Not while I've been in here, and that's a good 26 episodes.
Apparently he's getting a movie, but who's going to wait around for
that. *whispers to Voldemort* That's Harry Potter.

VOLDEMORT looks sideways at SHINJI.

Voldemort: Cunning disguise, but now that you mention it, I can see the
similarity... all that whining.

VOLDEMORT asks SHINJI to step outside. BALROG and NAZGUL watch them
leave. Hears a thud. VOLDEMORT comes back in.

NAZGUL looks at BALROG, who shrugs.

Balrog: Well, at least you shut him up. Anyway, gotta go back to the
other half, he's cooking dinner.

Nazgul: I didn't realise there were female Balrogs, let alone you...

Balrog: There's not.

Nazgul: Oh. I didn't realise.

Balrog: You mean the wings didn't give it away? You didn't think they
were for _flying_, did you? I mean, I'd have the aerodynamic ability of
a swallow tied to a coconut. They're my Mardi Gras costume. I bring
the house down with them... literally...

So there you have it, the Balrog, he's a flaming... errr... being of
flame.

Ah... Now Tenchi was one that was worse than Shinji. Less whinging,
but he must've been generating mind-altering waves, because there were
definitely paranormal elements in those girls' stalking of him.

I have one change, and will also fill in the additional questions that
you put. The change is this: will you put a spamblock in my email address,
please? I'm still getting a fair bit of spam, mostly shite about teen sluts
loving to have *** all over their faces [1], prescription medicine, Viagra,
and various stuff that I can't translate anyway. If you don't like the
spamblock that I use in the NGs, feel free to devise another, like Steuard
Jensen did when I put the same request to him. Those reptiles use bots to
trawl websites for email addresses, you know. I wish Smaug would eat as
many spammers as he could stomach, and burn the rest to greasy smears: I'd
concede Smaug as one of the good guys if he did.

I haven't read them all: not Leaf by Niggle, the Bombadil poems, or
Roverandom. Of the rest, I have no particular favourite. I like them all.

Yes, though not for their faithfulness to the books. I haven't seen the
DVD editions yet, which I have heard are more faithful than the theatrical
edition.

I mailed this to Alatar, but with the addition of a new question, I
thought I'd post the whole shebang:

DOB: January 31st, 1972

SEX: Male

SPECIES: H. Sapiens

NATIONALITY: Canadian (eh!)

POSTING SINCE: December 2001 (and previously in the early and mid-90s)

HEROES: Winston Churchill, Alfred the Great

LIKES: Roast beef, reading, writing

DISLIKES: Bigots, small creepy-crawly things, unauthorized fan-fiction

EMAIL: maureen-t...@alberni.net

WEBSITE: n/a

Favourite Tolkien-related website: http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/

Favourite book/story by Tolkien: Lord of the Rings

Do Balrogs have wings?: No

Do Elves have pointed ears?: Yes

Did the ring speak on Mt Doom?: No

Did the Nazgul intend to get the Ring on Weathertop?: No

Do the Nazgul carry their own rings?: No

Do Dwarves and Elves generally like each other?: No

Who killed the Witch-King, Merry or Eowyn?: Eowyn

Do Dwarven women have beards?: Yes

Was the original Glorfindel the same Elf as the 3rd age Glorfindel in
LOTR?: Yes

Do you like the LotR movies?: No

What are your thoughts on "canonical" texts: Generally speaking, I
tend to view anything not published during JRRT's life-time as being
non-canonical. Obviously texts published since his death are of
varying degrees of canonicity, but I tend to view any essay, not or
letter as being canonical providing it is not contrary to either
canonical texts or other non-canonical texts.

NOTES: Grrr..., Hobbits are humans!

Well, not exactly rape, as such...

Let's put it this way. He was looking at her, and the hypothetical camera
guy became very interested in the ceiling tiles and doorknob for about two
minutes while you hear Shinji breathing heavily in the background, and then
it cuts to a shot of his hand covered in some sticky white substance. You
do the math.

Well, the spamblock that I use in the NGs is evident enough. :-) I just
intersperse "god damn that spam" with my actual address. Relatively easy
for a human reader to interpret, or so I suppose; relatively difficult for a
bot to unravel. But since I offered Steuard to devise his own spamblock in
my address on his website where he has the etext, I shan't discriminate
against you by insisting that *you* use what I bleeping well tell ya to! :-)

Apart from that it is ANYTHING but TEUNC, that is all correct, o
Donald. The word Dlanod is too TEUNCy for ABT, but maybe we could
pronounce you Fool of AFT AND ABT and that way let you keep your
signature. This we will discuss at our GREAT next ABT meeting (When
will that be, David?)

Maybe this is a nice moment to explain to lurking newbies and clueless
regulars, that it is a traditional Irish custom in the newsgroups, to
post by using both one's own name and by using a nickname: David Flood
is AKA Een wilde Ier and Michael O'Neill is AKA O. I am one of the
posters in AFT who, as most regulars know by now, have adopted this
charming habit (Henriette AKA the softrat).

Huon a welcoming paw! She likes me to let you know that if you have a
