Is there a trick to get the keyboard to work with the NewVMS desktop??

First, I have the keyboard, mouse and monitor on a 4 port Belkin OMNI
KVM switch with 3 windows 2003 servers and my PWS 600a running VMS
7.2-2 (I have also had 7.3-2 and it does the same thing). The
Keyboard works GREAT on the WIndows systems

No matter what I do, the "?" on the keyboard will not work

No matter what I do the arrow keys will not work

If I plug the keyboard directly into the PWS600a the question mark
works but the Arrow keys will not.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

In my experience, there are only a very few KVM switches that
work with VMS. The two companies I know of that "do it right"
are Rose and Raritan, and even then, not all of their products
work. For instance, the Raritan MX48 (and similar units) will
work with VMS only if you have an APKME module in series with
the keyboard.

I am told that the problem is because VMS puts the keyboard
into a different mode than that used by PCs. Non-VMS-aware
KVM switches don't handle this well.

The 4 port Belkin OMNI KVM switch he's using doesn't even handle Alpha's
that well. I remember having to telnet into a Multia I had connected to one
temporarily and reboot it, as once I switched to another system and back, I
could no longer type. I finally gave up on plugging my Alpha's into the
KVM, and these days I just run them with a VT420 plugged in, and display my
DECwindows desktop on another system.

Same for PS/2's running OS/2. I tried an non-Belkin KVM which
also didn't work with the combination.

Well in one case I was using a DEC 2000 (Jensen) with the standard
graphics with a Belkin, and the Belkin thinks the video has gone to
sleep, although it did display. I didn't try to switch the kb or mouse.

In another situation I was using a DS20E and a Compaq KVM, and it worked
perfectly.

I tried to use a keyboard extender cable on a VT520 kb, but it didn't
work very well.

Try using a standard PC keyboard and >>>set kbd_hardware_type to PCXAL
This changes the I/O to a standard "non-vms" keyboard
If I remember correctly, this does the trick

Google for "KVMs, LK461 and DECwindows" on comp.os.vms back
in September of last year. I have a PWS 600au (thanks, David! :-)
and an IBM T20 laptop. A "standard" LK461 (VMS-style) keyboard
works perfectly with each of them...separately...

As others have mentioned, it's very difficult to find a KVM
that will support a PC _and_ an Alpha. Has to do with keyboard
"modes" and with the fact that many KVMs drop keycodes in modes
they're not expecting. (Laptop runs in mode 1, KVM runs keyboard
in mode 2 and translates between that and the other modes, Alpha
runs in mode 3 and has more key codes than a "standard" PS/2
keyboard in mode 2.)

Not wanting to buy an expensive, data-center type KVM from
Rose or Raritan, and not having the time to keep an eye on E-Bay,
I chose to use _two_ keyboards (sigh...). But the inexpensive
Rose Mini-Vista does fine switching the video and (3-button) mouse
between the two systems. YMMV.

Strangely enough, I purchased a Belkin Omni Cube 4-port KVM box at a local
retailer (CompUSA I think) and it's worked perfectly for my PW500/au (VMS)
and my Compaq WinXP box. Oh, and I also have an AS100 running Tru64 UNIX
attached and working fine.

Ken Fairfiled had a good summary of this a while back

http://groups.google.com/groups?q=fairfield+executive+group:comp.os.vms&hl=e

Another approach is to you PuTTY (which is free), which has the added
advantage that
you can chhose the colors of the windows, so in my case, for example, I have
different
colours for each cluster node, so I don't have include the node name in the
prompt.
I use this on a W2K box, but it also runs under Unix.

I too have a Belkin Omni Cube (it must be the cheapest 4 port KVM:-). Works
perfectly with my DPW600a (VMS) & a variety of desktop PCs & laptops. There is
one PC that refuses to recognise the keyboard & mouse unless it has focus when
it's booted though.
