Well, for most of you this post is not all that revolutionary. However, for
those of you have not read Unfinished Tales (UT) I cannot recommend it
enough.
I must admit that I have started on The Silmarillion three times and every
time could not get longer than 120 pages. UT is a differnt story all
together. There are many good things about UT, but one of the greatest
things for me was that no matter what aspect of Middle-Earth you are
interested in, you'll find some new info. If you have only read The Hobbit,
you'll find some great info about how Gandalf met the dwarves and why he
agreed to help them. And on the other hand if you are a die-hard
Silmarillion-fan you'll still find new info about all the ages.
I really enjoyed the chapters "The Quest for Erebor", "Cirion and Eorl" "The
history of Galadriel and Celeborn" and "The Disaster of Gladden Fields",
which all illuminated new perspectives of the well-known stories.

The best part about it however, was that the chapters were actually well
written and didn't seem unfinished at all. I didn't enjoy the writing style
in Sil. very much (or at least the parts of Sil. that I've actually
read...), but UT is so much different.

Therefore: If you enjoyed The Hobbit and LOTR, but either wasn't able to
finish or just have not read Sil. I can really recommend UT... it is a
masterpiece, that reminds me of how huge Tolkien's creation is and how many
questions there is left to ask...

I personally enjoyed the Silmarillion, but UT is great too, i especially
enjoyed Gladden Fields, that Isildur realised the ring would do no good in
his posession in the end.
And the alternative story of the Nazgul visiting Isengard and Saruman
yielding to Gandalf only to discover him gone.
