(I apologise if this gets posted twice; I first tried via my ISP's
usenet server but that did not appear to work, so now I'm posting via
Google)

Using this test page:
http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/welcome/

Flash is working, but Shockwave is not. I get the puzzle piece and
"Click here to get the plugin" in the Shockwave area.

So, I click the puzzle and the "get the plugin" on the popup, and it
takes me to where I can download the plugin. I download it, quit
Mozilla (and the "quick start" Mozilla icon in the system tray), and
run the installer. It seems to detect properly that I am using Mozilla
1.5, and seems to install normally; even congratulating me on a
successful installation.

When I go back to the test page, I get a popup message from Macromedia
Shockwave saying I need to reboot to complete the installation of
Shockwave Player. So, I click the Reboot Now button and it reboots.
When I'm back up, and go to the test page, I have the damn puzzle
piece again as if I never installed it!!!

The only thing I can think of that might have changed my system is I
had some Macromedia tools like Dreamweaver and Flash MX installed but
I uninstalled them (and even uninstalled Mozilla), reinstalled Mozilla
and still have the same problem with Shockwave.

I even tried making and using another Mozilla profile, but there was
no change.

my plugins directory has the following files
------------------------------------------
np32dsw.dll
npnul32.dll
NPSWF32.dll
ShockwavePlugin.class

Thanks,
T

Hmm... does Shockwave need Java?

I suppose not; I downloaded and installed java
(j2re-1_4_2_02-windows-i586-p-iftw.exe) with no change. But thanks
for the suggestion, it was worth a shot.

Are you downloading the plugin from the macromedia site or the netscape
pluginfinder site? (From what you say you did, it could be either -
regardless of the fact that you started on a macromedia page - it
depends on whether or not the page is configured correctly to send you
to the official download site). I ask this because it's possible the
version of shockwave on the netscape pluginfinder site is out of date.

And does anyone have a successful shockwave installation so we can
compare the dlls? (I don't - no shockwave for linux :-( )

Clicking the "get the plugin button" takes me to
http://sdc.shockwave.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?application/x-director&P5_Language=English
which looks like macromedia.

Try this It should work for Netscape as well as Mozilla.

Download it
>>>>http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/default/english/win95nt/8.5.1.106/Shockwave_Installer_Full.exe

Here the flash Plugin
>>>>http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/flash/english/win95nt/7.0.14.0/flashplayer7installer.exe

Save them to the hard drive, then install.

You may need to delete the shockwave plug & flash plug in, In the plug

in directory.

Type this without quotes in the browser address windows
"about:plugins"

This way you can make sure you delete the correct plugins.

However, This may not work.

Thanks Greg, but the files from those links didn't act any differently.

Here are some additional things you could try.
This may not work.

Make sure you log as administrator in Win Xp.
Try deleting the Shockwave & Flash Plugs in both
Netscape & Mozilla directory assuming you have Netscape.
Note Shockwave 8 does not work for Netscape 6, Mozilla
tends to use Netscape Plug ins. Then Reinstalling the plugins.

If that does not work.
Uninstall Mozilla. If anything is left over delete the Mozilla
directory. Uninstall Netscape. If anything is left over delete the
Netscape directory. Remove Sun Java. Remove The Mozilla & Netscape &
Macromedia, Sun Directory usually located in the
C:\Windows\Application Data

Note-You may need to reinstall shockwave & flash for I.E. if you
delete the Macromedia Directory(s). You can Try Not Deleting it
First. Now install Mozilla Than The Shockwave Plugins. Than all
other Plug ins. For Sun Java Download it Manually.
It will start to install, Click the Download Manually Link.

Only if you want Netscape 7.1

Create a Profile for Mozilla Call It Mozilla.
Install Netscape 7.1 Custom-Don’t Install Sun Java, Flash.
When Profile Manage Comes Up Create Profile. Name
It Netscape. Copy the plugins from the Mozilla Plugin directory to the
netscape plugin directory. Do not overwrite plugins.

Thanks again for the suggestions Greg. I had tried pretty much all of
that before, with the exception of uninstalling Java. So I tried
uninstalling everything, including Java, and installing them again.
Unfortunately that did not seem to help.

Thank you again for trying, I appreciate it.

Your Welcome

Their Might be one more way. It a major pain.
After you uninstall everything as I mentioned in the previous post
reboot.

Edit the registry.
Delete any references to Macromedia, Shockwave, Flash,
Sun Java, Netscape, Dreamweaver and Flash MX,
Then do what I said in my previous post by install Mozilla first
(Just a note xp has something called flash for xp operations)
So I would delete them only in Hkey User and Hkey Current user
Delete either the value or the key. Just be careful or you will have
to reinstall Xp. Some Mozilla Keys refer to Internet explorer. Do not
delete those.

If you get shockwave working after doing the above.

The following is optional.
I don’t know if you bought Dreamweaver and flash Mx.
If you didn’t I would not bother doing the following

Zip up the Mozilla & Netscape full install directory’s including the
Ones in Windows\application data. Remember to including hidden and
system & subfolder files when zipping up.

Now delete those directory’s that you just zipped. You will get a
registry warning error just ignore it.

Install Dreamweaver and flash mx

Now Unzip Mozilla and netscape back where they were. I would choose
to overwrite them if asked.

Of course this may not work either.

I did something like that already, but I got worried about some
entries and left them in.

I suspect though that the Macromedia stuff (Dreamweaver and MX) wasn't
to blame, I discovered another person with what sounds like the same
problem who never had that stuff involved.

Thank you again for suggestions!

FYI, I've found at least three other with this same problem, and I
made a Bugzilla error report:

What I ended up doing is using WinRAR to extract the files from the
shockwave exe file to the Firebird Plugins folder. Now Shockwave works
perfectly.

Thanks, but I think the files are going into my Mozilla Plugins folder
OK; I listed them above.

I installed Opera, ran the Shockwave Installer again, and Shockwave
was then working in both Opera and Mozilla.
