The world's first and BEST Nethack clan closes the 2003 season in TRIUMPH!

In a score for the record books, eit_brad sits atop the scoreboard as the
smoke clears:

High Score
No Points Name HP [max] Days
1 2222265672 eit_brad-Cav-Hum-Mal-Neu died on the - [389] 9
Astral Plane. Killed by a newt.

eit_cyrus clinched the #1 Wizard score (3rd high score overall), besting
his opponent from rival clan MIT by a factor of ten:

Class: Wizard
No Points Name HP [max] Days
3 127711638 eit_cyrus-Wiz-Elf-Mal-Cha died in the 6 [270] 12
Dungeons of Doom on level 22 [max 25].
Turned into green slime.

Twelve EIT top 500 clansmen:
biomorph, brad, yak, hump, cyrus, durok,
surreal, lifto, cobweb, fatdick, mobius, devron

EIT top 500 total score: 2402711520.

Game count: 34 of 500 (6.8 percent).
Average 70667985 points per game.

Non-EIT top 500 total score: 1337194088
174 non-EIT players.

Clan EIT accounts for 64 percent of the top 500 point total.

EIT : non-EIT :: 1.796831 : 1

If the rest of the 11718 games all had the score of the #500 game,
45090 points, the 34 recorded scores of Clan EIT would still
represent 56 percent of the grand point total.

What else can be concluded? Clan EIT RULEZ!!!!!@!~

See you next year...

Hey, Clan Marvin kicked their asses on the ascension count.

what his ascension % this year was, and how much RL time a typical ascension
takes him, and how many turns in-game.

I hope next year the tournament standings reward something other than having
lots of free time. Every single category except Lowest-Scored Ascension and
Most Ascensions was based on wasting time, and not based on actual skill at
nethack.

Yeah, but do they have lives? How much sex (with other people) did clan EIT
experience during the month? How much time was spent outdoors exersizing?
How many mountains were climbed? How many well-cooked meals (other than
take-out) did they eat? How much time spent with family members? Any of
clan EIT have children?

Those are the stats I'd like to see.

b) about 5h (tourney) 3h (home)
c) 15k-25k moves

I've just got to know this: how do you ascend 75%+ of your games?
I've played for 14 years now (since the days of "You arrive in hell
without fire resistance. You burn to a crisp."). I ascend a
character about 1-2 a month, playing a couple hours a night, rarely on
weekends. I've still never ascended C or Ra, and only K in 3.0.j.
Your turn counts are truly impressive, as I'm usually in the mid 30k.
I doubt I've ever ascended in less than 30k turns. I've been on rgrn
off and on for 8 years, and source dive all the time. I never wish
for artifacts, rarely do anything useful in a polymorphed state, and
rarely turn down a genocide or wish when they arise.

Which demons/devils did you make your pact with? :)

Correct me if i'm mistaken, but:
2402711520
- 2222265672
= 180445848

and that's leaving the rest of brad's score intact. Looks like
someone's *carrying* the clan here. ;-) Next year you might get more
respect if you don't base most of your claims as a clan on one game by
one member of your team.

First off, i did have too much time on my hands, personally.

That said, there is skill involved in both being comfortable enough
near the endgame to start focussing solely on amassing points, and
also in figuring out an efficient way of doing so. Scores have
increased over the past three years as people have honed and, pretty
much perfected these skills.

Not that I'm going to claim that ludicrous point-mongering involves
nearly as much skill as was shown by marvin, bourland, patita, or miso
(yeah, i saw that duel there near the end ;-}) Frankly, the concept of
pacifism or most of the 'hard' conducts scare the heck out of me. ;-)
But it's not like it's trivial, either.

Congratulations to everyone, in any event.

See, I have to disagree with this. The skill involved is trivially
greater than that required to ascend a few times. This is why a
person's second or third ascension can be an extinctionist.

Indeed, IIRC the original extincionist, Matthew Bourland, was motivated
by making the game easier. "The endgame looks hard; better make sure
everyone is dead first!"

IIRC eit_brad had a negative score. Please take that into account
when continuing with your calculations from here. You might get
a different result.

There was a significant amount of controversy surrounding that score.
I lost a very good game in the same "server failure". It pretty much
put a damper on the whole tournament for me. It didn't help to discover
the reason for the crash, and it didn't impress me that the score file
was rigged for eid_brad's benefit.

Actually, the "killed by a newt" eit_brad game was not the one which was
lost to server failure. That one scored significantly less.

i'll show you mine if you show me yours.

never before have i had both my sex life and the quality of my cooking

but seriously, this is a NETHACK TOURNAMENT. not a sex tournament, or
an "exersizing" tournament, or a mountain climbing tournament, or
anything of the sort. if we skipped out on any of those things (and
mind you i'm not saying that we did), it's because we are THAT
DEDICATED to the cause of KICKING YOUR BUTT.

and when i say "we," yes of course i mean "brad." and maybe cyrus.

i'm just in it for the LIFESTYLE.

Well the easiest answer, avoid to die, or more popular:
"The trick is to keep breathing."

I do nothing special, just that what is advised in rgrn every
now and then.
Watch your HP, maintain an escape route, get intrinsics, don't take
on situations which are to difficult, for your character.
(Greetings from Demogorgon, YASD.)
Improve your character, ...
Retreat and heal early.

I've no preference in mines first or sokoban first, but I visited
the top-level of sokoban and at least mine town with all characters.

Usually I visit the castle and explore gehennom before the quest.

If there is light+jumping or levitation or a musical instrument
and the character seems tough enough, the castle is entered.

An avarage conducts listing is:
You genocided L
You used 5 wishes (mostly [BoS, [gdsm, (BoH, (MM, =oL, =oTC, ?Ch, ?geno)
You didn't wish for artifacts
You never changed form
You didn't polymorphed an object
You survived

: I've played for 14 years now (since the days of "You arrive in hell

: without fire resistance. You burn to a crisp.").

Same here.

: Your turn counts are truly impressive, as I'm usually in the mid 30k.

Hmm 30k is a good/fast ascension, compared to what you read in rgrn.

: I doubt I've ever ascended in less than 30k turns.

Try to.

Is it just me, or is EIT's victory overinflating their egos?

Must be you, as I did not see a victory. One of their members got high
score and a very late added "clans" were claimed by them without much
challenge. I feel Marvin is the winner if there was one as ascending is
the the most important things. If they wish to maintain the voice, I am
sure we could match them with a clan from r.g.r.n

Not necessary with the right amulet. I just seem to have most of my
characters drop to 0 HP. That seems to end their adventures pretty
quickly ;)

I typically check the top level of the mines, explore if it is light.
Else, hit Sokoban. I lose too many non-combat-wombats in the treasure
zoo at the top of sokoban.

Hmm... I typically don't visit the castle, and never the VotD
pre-quest. I've only lost 1 character on the quest in recent times...
a knight who forgot that Ixoth could cast magic spells. Touch of death
got me.

I almost always find a soldier with a bugle by then.

Ditto, except I don't make genociding L a top priority, and typically
have more wishes (7-8). Oh, and I get that last one far fewer times
than you...

Sadly, I never got any farther in that version...

I try to, but I usually spend 15-20k turns going through Gehennom.
Unless I have a spell caster with magic mapping, I typically have to do
it the hard way (which is slightly easier with a magic lamp, but a pain
nonetheless).

Any tips for making this part of the game easier? I typically stay
away from tengu corpses and the chance for intrinsic TC, since
uncontrolled teleportitis is such a PAIN, and I usually don't have room
for a =oTC. I know TC would make Gehennom faster, but it's just not
something I get all that often.

The one plus for me is that I haven't lost a character with the Amulet
in quite some time (although my recent first monk ascension came
close). All in all, I consider it a successful month if I ascend once
(or have an extinctionist live through a month).

Thanks for your response!

But they certainly did gain some sort of victory by showing how very
flawed the nethack score system is, at least with respect to ascension.
For that, even if nothing else, I appreciate them.

Hmm, it's called magical _breathing_, after all.

If you stay in the corridor you can take them one by one.

Well, a pre XP14 character can explore hell, so why generate a harder dungeon

Soldiers with bugles tend to wake up other soldiers, so I just leave barraks
alone, unless in dire need of a musical instrument.

Hmm, with 6-8 ?oMM and a pickaxe or two /oDig you explore hell fast.
If you know the upstairs, dig down, if not read ?oMM.
Walk the wiz-tower or level-tele if you can.
Another but risky approach is, hunt a demon or lich from the deepest level up.

It baffles me when people say this. The winning score last year was 450
million, which isn't that much less than this year's score of 2000 million,
except that the latter happens to be enough to overflow the (somewhat
arbitrary) maximum of the score variable. If that is what it takes to make
someone realize the score system is worthless, then probably he should
recompile with a bigger score variable and forget about the rest.

Marvin rocks. But I have to add my own little story:

Most people who have seen me bowl are astonished at the fact that I
have a bowling trophy. It's for Highest Handicapped Game (female).
During that league season I carried an average of about 108 and on one
magical night I bowled a game of 160. With my handicap added in, that
was a REALLY SWEET score and earned me a trophy. With that story in
mind, I would like to say:

Marvin may have the equivalent of a big tall trophy for highest
average, but....

Neener neener neener...
I ascended a Tourist...
In the tournament...
Got 3rd place for all Tourists...
In the tournament...
Neener neener neener...

If you ask me, it hasn't inflated our egos enough! By my calculations
we have over TWO BILLION TWO HUNDRED TWENTY-TWO MILLION points of
bragging left to complete -- but that's ok, we've got eleven months
before we can let our scores do the talking for us again!

Better start collecting luckstones, suckaz! Have fun cleaning out
