There's been no official word yet on how Diamond and/or Marvel plan to
handle this problem.

I plan to handle the problem by laughing heartily at another Marvel blunder.
And I'll do so while watching Birds of Prey......... ;p

Well, mine did have that problem. I mean, it was a kind of a pain, but
it didn't ruin it for me.
Perhaps your copy got exposed to some type of heat source during
printing/shipping.

Why...? From the previews I've seen, the book is rather well-written-- It just
may not be of much interest to anyone who has been following Marvel books for
longer than a few months.

And are there that many people who are newcomers to Marvel who feel like
shelling out for a hardcover coffee table book? I'm not convinced.
But it's on sale now, so we'll see.

I'm not completely new to Marvel, but I've thought of picking it up to
cover the ten-year gap in my collection. Unfortunately, I'm currently
unemployed, so it'll have to go on the Christmas list instead.

From a flick through it, I'm not sure this is necessarily the book
you're looking for.

I'm not looking for detail. I am mostly looking for things that will
answer my broader questions, like "when did the White Queen turn good?"
and "who the heck is this Chamber that's supposed to be an X-Men Icon?"
I read the first Chuck Austin UXM on dotcomics and liked it, but there were
a few team members I didn't recognize. It would be nice to know who they
were, and how they got involved with the team.
Even if this book doesn't cover that in sufficient detail, it would still
be a good place to point my sister when she sees a Marvel movie and comes
to me asking questions like "who's the guy with the claws?"
Oh I don't know its the sort of thing I like to have on my
bookshelf. That big Marvel Universe hardcover from a few years
ago is the same sort of thing. It didn't really tell me anything
new but I like these sorts of books. Now whether I like it enough
to spend what is it $35? I haven't decided that yet. I will look
at it though.
Besides isn't the intended market more the casual bookstore
browser really anyway?

In the comic shops? No I really doubt it. But this is a book
which screams coffee table to me.
Its a big, lavishly illustrated hardback designed to catch the
Christmas market in bookstores not comic stores. Or at least
thats my guess.

Count one here :) It's a nice gift for a fresh Marvel fan, and I seriously
consider getting a copy for my friend's birthday.

That's possible. The more I think about it, the more sure I am that the
people who find the book most useful and are most likely to have the
opportunity to pick it up are the people who already buy a lot of comics,
but very few Marvel comics. If someone's shelling out quite a bit for DC
stuff (to pick one company) and starts to see some interesting ideas in
movies based on Marvel stuff, they may be inclined to pick this up as a
crash course in the Marvel Universe, which would then help them decided if
they want to start making the long-term purchases of Marvel titles, and if
so, decide which characters they are most interested in and which titles
they should start out with.

That's another question, of course, but at least they seem to be the target
audience, and I think the texts I've seen work well as introductions to the
characters.
With a whole bunch of big-time movies out there, I don't believe it's entirely
unreasonable to have that kind of book out on bookstore shelves, personally.
