(NPS Morning Report, 9/3/03)
Joshua Tree National Park (CA)
Closures Due to Serious Flooding

Torrential rains fell on the park on August 27th and 28th, damaging
numerous park roads and facilities (these storms were separate from the
storm reported in the Morning Report and InsideNPS yesterday). A number
of temporary closures have accordingly been put into effect. Due to the
flash flood damage, the following have been closed until further notice:

a.. the Indian Cove Area, including Indian Cove Road south of Indian
Cove Ranger Station, Indian Cove Campground, Indian Cove group
campsites, and the Rattlesnake Canyon day use area;
b.. Route 11, Pinto Basin Road, from White Tank Campground to
Cottonwood Visitor Center (there's also no access to Old Dale and Black
Eagle Mine Roads from the park);
c.. Covington Flats Road, including the road to Upper Covington
Backcountry Board, the road to Lower Covington day use area, and the
road to Eureka Peak; and
d.. Keys Ranch Road to the ranch gate.
Many areas in the park received from three to five inches of rain last
week, with between one and three inches pelting many park locations in
one 24-hour period alone. Some of the storms were characterized by high
winds, heavy rains, and occasional hail. In the Wilson Canyon area on
Route 11, a 300-foot section of road was deeply undercut by flood
waters, creating a hazardous situation. More than six miles of road in
the Pinto Basin area have been covered with rocks, mud, and debris. In
the Indian Cove area, campground access roads have been washed out, and
many campsites have been covered with fresh mud. Fortunately, these
storms caused no visitor injuries or accidents. Many other facilities
were unaffected and remain open. Further updates on facility closures
will be issued as conditions change. For current information on park
road and travel conditions, visitors can call 760-367-5500.

(Yesterday's report, separate storm)

Joshua Tree National Park (CA)

Flooding Caused by Tropical Storm Erika

The remnants of Tropical Storm Erika struck the park on the afternoon of
August 20th, causing sudden flashflooding in the Morongo Basin and two
to three inches of rain in in an hour’s time in the town of Yucca
Valley. Cars were swept away by a major flash flood that ran through the
town’s streets, and homes filled up with flood waters. The town’s fire
department was swamped with emergency calls for help. A BLM engine and
crew from the Black Rock Interagency Fire Center, located in the park,
responded to provide assistance. Over the course of about four hours,
crew members assisted with numerous swiftwater rescue assignments and
helped salvage property from homes. While en route to town, crew members
saw roads flooded with three feet of water, cars stuck in washed-out
roadways, and vehicles being swept down washes. One park employee had
her car partly buried by mud and debris at Black Rock campground.
Covington Road, a dirt four-wheel-drive road, has been closed until
washouts can be repaired.

It was AWESOME!! I am sorry for the 4 folks that lost their lives.

My wife and I were cruising through Yucca Valley on our way to a Nursery to
buy some more Southwest Desert plants to add to our native landscape in
Hemet when the storm started to blow in. The storm brought big water, big
winds, big thunder and quite a bit of hail. We found some high ground at
one of my quiet bouldering spots and watched rivers form right before out
eyes. One could hear big boulders rolling down the washes. It was awesome.
We were stuck for a while because water was deep and swift! I would
estimate that some washes had four to six feet of water violently flowing.
On our return trip through Yucca Valley Hwy 62 was buried under mud, nowhere
to be seen in some places.

This was the same system that caught us at Tahquitz, I think. I'm
waiting for the day when I get to see the washes at Josh fill up and
run proud.

Looks like that was it. Check the newspaper reports. Cars were washed
away in 29 Palms (people died). Pretty amazing. I bet that Rattlesnake
canyon in Indian Cove was something to see.

If I hadn't had my own "If it wasn't August, I'd say it's going to rain!"

Here's to going heavy and slow and bringing rain gear!

Oh its sunny and hot here too. wild storm yesterday though. completely
missed some places. rained at my house but not at mission bay by the
gym. Anyway your time is coming. What's more all you PNWet types know
it. After every year like the one that just passed you get a monsoon.
Might take until mid Oct or Early Nov, but it's a when not an if. We'll
talk to you then. ;)

Barker Dam is about 3/4 full. The dam behind Keyes ranch was
overflowing to the point of Niagra Falls. We were just getting ready
to take the rubber raft out of the SAR cache. Now I guess we'd better
blow it up and see if there are any holes in it!

I was considering that! It certainly wouldn't be true to
life.

I may be going to a track session at Laguna Seca on Nov. 4.
Which means I would be in the area at the right time, so to
speak. But I'll have to drive my S2000 and live for more
than a week out of a car with a cargo compartment smaller
than my biggest climbing pack.

Also considering I haven't been on any rock harder than
class 3 in about 13 months now, I may have to do some
practicing....

Not to worry. The essence of that particular event is to brag about
stuff one hasn't done yet and to see who can shout the loudest about
that heinous drop knee move. Meanwhile the witches are flying about
soliciting their bodies and the warlocks are sorting gear. The rest
of us are drinking Yägermeister trying to remember the good old days
when men were men and women didn't lead.

Looking forward to finally meeting you.

I've seen some places in Josh, like Rattlesnake canyon, that looked like
they could make some fun creekin' style kayaking if there was water. I've
often thought that it'd be really cool to have video of me doing some "First
Descents" at Joshua Tree.

Looks like I missed an opportunity.

Dahhhling, if you're too focused on climbing to have a costume, save
yourself some time and skip the cameo. Besides, you have to be famous
to "put in a cameo" and last time I checked the rags, your name was
