NNTP via Pine 4.44

Freeshell.org, which I list on my IMAP page, has a good news feed
and the latest Pine installed. For their lowest level account,
the fee is $1, but you might want to go for a higher level
account and support this non-profit.

PS - If your primary host is dreamhost.com, they told me they are
thinking of adding a newsfeed so ask them when/if they are going
to do that (maybe if enough of us ask, they will!).

The suggestion i could give you is to get the all.patched pine from
http://www.math.washington.edu/~chappa/pine/info/all.html
that contains the Fancy Thread Interface patch
This eneables your pine4.44 to get the poste threated :)
Then, you could setup your .pinerc like that:
feature-list=
delete-skips-deleted,
auto-fancy-thread-screen,
enable-aggregate-command-set,
sort-key=tHread
thread-sort-key=Arrival/Reverse
At least, that's what i do and i'm a happy pine user and news reader :)

I'd suggest Supernews; they're fairly cheap, and they get rid of a lot
of hipcrime crud / spam. I had an account with them through Speakeasy
(but SE has unfortunately now switched to Giganews, which isn't too bad
either).
As an employee of above-mentioned email/Web host, you may want to make
another request to support about this - I've been talking to our
marketing folks about getting outsourced news services from Supernews or
a similar provider... the demand isn't that high though.

recommendation in your IMAP list. I was able to access NNTP through
them just fine. However, I do have a couple questions on that note:
1) I tried to add their NNTP server to my .pinerc file on my Dreamhost
account, but was not able to connect (access not allowed based on
different IP address). Is there any way around that? That is, I'd like
to have a single point of access (via Dreamhost) for various email
accounts and NNTP, without having to SSH into my freeshell account
separately.
2) If the above is not possible and I do have to use freeshell to
access NNTP, is there a way to install Eduardo's Fancy Threads onto
Pine that's intalled there? I tried a wget but permission was denied.
(Sorry if there is an obvious solution.)

Do you have a trial account or a confirmed account? The restricted shell
doesn't let you do a lot, but I imagine you could use ftp or scp with a
confirmed account.
I think there are a couple other free providers, and if you don't mind
paying, you could check out supernews / giganews.
I will talk to our marketing folks again - the people you spoke to
probably gave you the official line, which is that we're not planning on
offering it. :>

There are two possible ways around this, but I haven't tried
either with freeshell.org.
1) Since they use UW IMAP, you should be able to set up an IMAP
to NNTP proxy, which I describe here

With this technique, you'll use Pine on Dreamhost to connect via
IMAP to Freeshell (which you should be able to do, right?) and
then connect to the NNTP server from there. Details are in the
link above and the google links I give there.
2) An alternative is to ssh from Dreamhost to Freeshell and
forward a random port that's higher than 1024 to their NNTP port
(usually port 119). Then in your pinerc set the news server to
localhost:localport#
for example
localhost:1119

I think you need more than the $1 Freeshell account to do things
like compiling or running ssh or sftp (which makes sense). Pine
4.50 has nice threading displays built in so when that's
released, you should be set at Freeshell (assuming they upgrade).

Thanks for this suggestion, Nancy. It works - sort of. I'm able to connect
just fine (though I had to change the /tls portion of the setting to
/notls since the former would not work. And the connection isn't quite as
fast as when I connect directly to freeshell and access NTTP from there,
although in one instance it was zipping along. In another instance, I get
this error:
[MAIL FOLDER "comp.mail.pine" CLOSED DUE TO ACCESS ERROR]
...followed by a number of "[UID sequence invalid]" errors, making
messages unreadable. In other words, results seem to be sporadic.

Correct. The news server is a different machine (news.nwlink.com) than
that to which I SSH (sdf.lonestar.org).

Thanks for the info. I currently have only the $1 account. Cool that
threading will be in Pine 4.50. Any idea when that will be released?
