FORESIGHT VISION WEEKEND - PUTTING FEYNMAN'S NANOTECH VISION INTO ACTION
--Senior Associates Gathering--
May 15-16, 2004 in Palo Alto
Welcome Reception May 14 at 7 pm
Optional Full-Day Tutorial: May 14
http://gmail.foresight.org/cp/51495Ca9d6cd588291c6ad7ccd5e4fe4af8a1c/

Make a difference in steering your nanotech future.
Hear tech visionaries sketch what's coming, then
brainstorm how to make the future we're picturing
today into the reality of tomorrow.
Then: we implement!

What aspect of our MNT future most excites you --
repairing the human body, ending chemical pollution,
creating economic abundance, developing space
resources, delivering basic necessities -- like clean
water -- to the developing world...or how about
a personal role in making all this happen?

This conference will have a strong focus on
empowering you to take action:

* Join one of the new Special Interest Groups -- on
MNT and Medicine, the Environment, Law, or
Business/Investing -- to move your goals for MNT
(and your own role) forward.

* Your special interest not on the list? How about
Space Applications, Education, even
Fiction/Hollywood? Start a new SIG to bring
together those sharing your particular goal.

* Had trouble getting your colleagues, or even your
spouse, to understand what's coming? Now you can
sponsor guests at the meeting -- let them hear for
themselves and feel the excitement of MNT's
potential.

* Want a career in MNT? Start positioning yourself
now by getting to know those most directly
involved today.

This year's Foresight Vision Weekend will be
"bottom-up" and "self-organizing", so bring your
ideas and let's take action to make Feynman's vision
for nanotechnology happen both sooner and safer,
for everyone.

We'll picture what molecular nanotechnology (MNT)
will bring, and strategize on how each of us can
participate in what's coming during the years ahead.

FUNDAMENTALS OF NANOTECHNOLOGY TUTORIAL
MAY 14, 2004

Back by popular demand, on the kick-off day of the
Foresight Vision Weekend, we will offer a:
"Fundamentals of Nanotechnology" tutorial
May 14, 2004 from 9 am - 5 pm

This tutorial is designed for individuals who want a
quick grasp of the basics. Top nanotech speakers
will give in-depth briefings on nanotech - and
answer your individual questions on the
science and technology, the long-term goals
and near-term opportunities of the Next Industrial
Revolution.

Instructors are:

* Steve Jurvetson, Draper Fisher Jurvetson
The best known VC in nanotech explains the nano biz

* Prof. Ralph C. Merkle, Georgia Tech
#1 on Google for nanotechnology - he'll give us the tech orientation

* Timothy Martin, NanoBusiness Alliance
What's happening today in labs and industry

* Christine Peterson, Foresight Institute
The big picture on nano, today and tomorrow

Wow. We are expected to pay *them* to hype *us* to help make *them*
rich!

I don't understand - do you want Foresight to pay you?

They are a non-profit organization, and no one is "getting rich" there. In
fact a lot of people have donated time and money to them of their own free
will, and I doubt the compensation for the small staff is particularly
large.

I think your objections are too vague and unclear. What specifically do you
object to?

I am dismayed that nanotechnology isn't even a science, in any formal
sense, or much of an industry yet, but is being hyped as the next big
cancer-curing, money-making thing. Nanotech is, I think, the concept
that materials have interesting properties in the rarely-explored
region between single molecules and bulk quantities, sort of at the
quantum borderline. That's great, and deserves the research and tools
to explore properly. But this infant nanotech is being hyped as a
great upside investment to the general public, which seems more like
snake oil than science to me.

Remember the internet bubble? Some of these nanotech seminar speakers
are *exactly* the same people who got rich selling you B2B new-economy
shares at top dollar.

Nanotech is not ready for prime-time public investment, and a
premature investment bubble will only do long-term harm. Remember, the
only reason VCs want the public to invest is so that they can get
*out*.
