The product activation is a royal pain and would recommend no one to
buy this product. The following is my dialog with their tech support:

Time Started about 11:40PM
You have been connected to H. Donald.
H. Donald: Hello xxx, how may I help you today?
xxx: I've got a Product Activation Error - unknown Product Activation
Service Client error
xxx: I had activated the product back in late december. I went to
finalize
my taxes tonight and tax kept crashing at the startup. I walked the
reinstall step because I updated recently and so I think I had the
problem described on your web site. I'm now trying to pring and finish
my taxes but it won't let me
xxx: Hello - are you there?
H. Donald: Please give me a moment to research the issue.
H. Donald: Please provide me the exact error message and the error
code you received if there appears to be any.
xxx: I gave it to you exactly as it states
xxx: Product Activation Error -
xxx: An unknown Product Activation Service Client error occurred.
H. Donald: What operating system are you using?
xxx: Windows XP
H. Donald: Please check wether you have logged on in your system
with the administrator right.
xxx: Yes I have
H. Donald: *May I know since when are you facing this issue and what
was the last thing you were doing when the issue started?

xxx: I was trying to do a Print for Review
H. Donald: Have you activated the program on this system?
xxx: I tod you, I did back in the december. But when I started it
today
ttax was crashing. You have something on your web site about it and
says you to reinstall. So I reinstalled.
xxx: ttax.exe would crash on starting to program and I sent an error
report to microsoft via the XP error report. I did it three times and
sent it three times. After the second time, I closed all running
programs. It then crashed a third. I rebooted my machine and tried
again. This time nothing seemed to start. I didn't an error message
but it didn't run. I tried again - same thing. So I went to your
web site to see if others had the same problem. It says you had an
issue on Jan 30, 2003 with the one-click update server. This may
have affected some customers when performing the One-Click Update
within TurboTax 2002. So I figured that effected me. I think I did
update on Jan 30 because I got back from a trip that day and my
w-2 forms came. So I added them to turbotax that night and I also
updated turbo tax. But I didn't run it after the update until today.
H. Donald: What operating system are you using?
xxx: Windos XP - Home Edition
H. Donald: Please follow the steps
H. Donald: Open Windows Explorer
Right-click the Start button
Click Explore
In the left-hand side, click on the folder turbotax
Press Ctrl-F.
In the Search for files or folders named box, type *cache*
Click Search Now
Right-click each of the files found and choose Delete
Launch TurboTax while holding the CTRL key

xxx: No files were found. I'll try again
xxx: Ok, I did the wrong search.
xxx: Now I have lots of cache files.
xxx: Just those in turbo tax I assume
xxx: ctfcace files
H. Donald: Do you have searched in the turbotax folder?
xxx: Within turbotax directory there are ficache
xxx: rncache
xxx: ctfcache in 3 different turbotax subdirectories
xxx: Delete all of these
H. Donald: yes
xxx: As I exited turbo tax - prior to deleting these files, I got a
TurboTax Engine has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are
sorry for the inconvenience.
H. Donald: Plesae delete those files and follow the steps.
xxx: Files deleted. Started turbotax with the ctrl key held
Time is now 12:10 AM
H. Donald: Please provide me the feedback about the results
xxx: Sorry, I was waiting for any other steps
xxx: I tried to print, it didn't ask about activation. It gave me a
dialog box. I said print then it game me an error.
xxx: Now it says I cannot print or electronically file using the trial
version of TurboTax.
xxx: Do I try the activation step again
xxx: CDAC11BA.EXE process is running so your background activation
process is running.
H. Donald: Please give me a moment to research the issue.
Time is now 12:29 AM
H. Donald: Please reinstall the product as provided in the link.
The gaint is sednign you to
http://www.turbotaxsupport.com/faq3.asp?docid=117.
xxx: Looks like I'll have to reboot, what happens if I still have
problems.
xxx: Note, why do I need to install from the hard disk
H. Donald: I fht eissue still reamins please feel free to use our live
help service agina. We will more than happy to assist you.
xxx: I didn't have any problems from the CD
xxx: It worked fine until I updated the product
H. Donald: Plase uninstall the product.
xxx: This is a royal pain
xxx: The news is right about turbotax - Product Activation is awful
H. Donald: Take the back up copy of you return you have created before
that.
H. Donald: Please search for *.ini
xxx: prd.ini in 32bit
xxx: setup.ini in DlInst
H. Donald: xxx, May I have the product key written on the backof the
CD sleeve. Also it would helpfull to me if you provide me the exact
date when you first activated the product.

xxx: 99999-9999-99999-999
xxx: the C_DILLA directory was created on Dec 26th so probably
xxx: I got the program for Christmas from my Wife
H. Donald: 11111-1111-11111-1111. Please reinstall the product with
this
key
xxx: So is this another number I have to remember forever
H. Donald: yes
xxx: Reinstalled - doing the update
xxx: Same problems
xxx: After the update, I loaded my tax file
xxx: I tried to print. Gave me the dialog but then gave printer error.
xxx: Tried to print
xxx: Says I need to activate
xxx: Tried product activation
xxx: Got an unknown Product Activation Service Client error occurred.
xxx: What is the internet address that product activation is try to go
to
xxx: Maybe that address is somehow blocked right now
H. Donald: Do you find any request code
xxx: What do you mean?
xxx: If I click on I would like to activate over the phone and then
click
next - I get the same error - Unknown Product Activate Service Client
error occurred. So maybe its not the internet
xxx: Maybe I should reinstall but not do the update and try the
activation.
xxx: After I click Ok I get the telephone diaglog
xxx: Product Key: 11111-1111-11111-1111
xxx: Request Code:
xxx: Nothing is there
H. Donald: Please give me a moment to research the issue
xxx: Ok
H. Donald: Do you get any error code.
xxx: Nope
H. Donald: I am proving you the express pin. Please contact the
following
number 1-520-901-3125.
xxx: What hours is this number available
H. Donald: This number is available from 9AM to 6pm from monday to
friday
xxx: You mention an express pin is that just the phone number
xxx: Is that eastern time
H. Donald: Do I get reimbursed for the phone cost?
H. Donald: Please provide the express pin
xxx: 9999
xxx: I'm sorry, I though you were giving it to me
H. Donald: Is there anything else I can help you with?
xxx: Do I get reimbursed for the phone cost?
xxx: This already wasted an hour 90 minutes
H. Donald: You do not require the phone cost. Provide the express pin
to them.
xxx: 520 is a long distance number - I assume they call back then
xxx: Yes or no?
H. Donald: xxx, I request you to contact the number. We will research
your issue at first priority. You can contact us through chat again.
xxx: ok
H. Donald: Is there anything else I can help you with?

Time is now 1:18AM

Time is now 8:55PM
D. Floyd: Hello Kyle, how may I help you today?
xxx: I sent an hour and half with H. Donald without
any real help. The only thing we ended up to doing
was unisntalling a couple of times and trying a new product id
code. After I got done with him, I uninstalled turbotax
and unisntalled safecast. I then installed turbotax. I did
the product activation. But when I print I get an error
occurred while attempting to print.
So I uninstalled again and installed turbotax. This time
I didn't print, I just finished taxes and electronically filed.
That work. I got confirmation today. SO I decided to print my
paper work.
I got an error occurred while attempting to print.
xxx: Oh yeah, I forgot to tell, after I get the error printing
it then thinks I haven't activated and must buy a license.
xxx: I'll let you read for a little bit
D. Floyd: Is there anything else I can help you with?
xxx: Fix it
D. Floyd: xxx, Please provide me the exact error message.
xxx: An error occurred while attempting to print
xxx: Then it doesn't let my print anymore it wants me to activate
the product
D. Floyd: Please unistall and reinstall the program again.
xxx: I TRIED THAT 5 TIMES!!! DOESN'T WORK!!!!
D. Floyd: xxx, plase unistall and reinstall the program again
xxx: I'm sorry I'm mad but I spent 90 minutes very late last night
He said it would be priority to fix it
xxx: WHY REINSTALL WHAT WILL IT FIX THAT WAS DIFFERENT THAN
THE PREVIOUS 5 TIMES
D. Floyd: Please give me a moment to research the issue
xxx: Can I have a senior technician online that knows something
about software. I'm not anxious to waste another 90 minutes
D. Floyd: xxx, whould like to talk to a live support agent?
xxx: I would like to speak to an expert please
D. Floyd: To continue the process of resolving your issue, I am
giving you an Express PIN and a phone number to call to speak
with a phone representative

Please be at your computer system when you call so the agent
can troubleshoot the issue with you.

The phone number to call is 520-901-3135
The Express PIN is: 5555555
xxx: No good
xxx: They are closed right now
xxx: I can't call from work because I don't have my
xxx: home computer with me
xxx: Also if it takes an hour on the phone are you paying for the
phone call
xxx: The problem occurs when I attempt to print and then thinks
I have to reactivate. Why is it doing this?
D Floyd: xxx, your question was related to printing your return
and we have provided you detailed steps to resolve your issue.
Would you like to use the Express PIN so that you can call one of our
phone
representatives during normal busines hours, or would like to
continue troubleshooting this issue via chat with me?
xxx: Also, it won't let me ractivate at this point because I get an
unknown Product Activation Error
xxx: What detailed steps did you provide
D. Floyd: Kyle plaes use the given Express Pin in order to resolve
this issue.
xxx: How do I if I'm not at my computer when you are open?
D. Flody: xxx, they will be able to guide you further.
xxx: You haven't answered my question
xxx: I don't have access to my computer during those hours so
how does it work? Also do you reimburse for the phone call?
D. Floyd: They will be able to provide you a new product key to
install the program again.
xxx: You really don't understand do you
D. Floyd: You only have to pay for the long distance call.
xxx: I don't need a product key - I've tried two
xxx: The problem is during the print. Something within turbotax
crashes
xxx: It then wrectks the activation
xxx: And thinks I have to activate again.
xxx: I was able to file electronically so it was activated correctly
xxx: Again how do they help me if I can't be at my computer during
those hours?
D. Floyd: Please give me a moment to research the issue.
D. Floyd has left the session.

Please wait while we find another specialist to assist you

product
xxx: If I try to activate it I get an unknown product activation error
occurred.
xxx: If I uninstall and reinstall then it thinks I'm activated and ok
xxx: I print, I get "An error occurred while attmpting to print."

print."
xxx: Uninstall and reinstalled.
xxx: Instead of printing I finished my taxes and filed.
D. Monica: Please give me a moment to research the issue.
xxx: I got my confirmation today. Note - must of activated correctly
to file - right. So since I had my confirmation. I tried to print.
I got "An error occurred while attempting to print."
D. Monica: xxx, sorry for the inconvience.
xxx: Don't tell me an express pin either please - I don't have
my computer at work so I can't call during business hours
D. Monica: Ok
D. Monica: xxx, when you wanted to take the printout of the forms
you get the error and can't be able to take the printout.

He might of thought turbotax. I meant the other program prints fine.

Also, I just checked my credit card on the net. Currently there are
2 $14.95 charges from Intuit!!

And it still not fixed.

Sounds almost exactly like my experience. The identical (to yours) canned
scripted massages almost made me puke. I'd explain the problem, then they
would ask... What is the problem? as if they were not listening. They
close out cases even if not resolved, so each day I would have to start all
over and explain problem again. I spent 3 week on and off with Chat before
someone was finally able to help me get activated. It also cost me a lot
in long distance phone calls most of which resulted in disconnects because
of their automated system malfunction.

Next year I will look for a product that advertises "NO ACTIVATION REQUIRED"

(1) If you did not order anything from Intuit, tell your credit card to
deny payment of these charges.
(2) Return TurboTax, get your money back, and buy TaxCut. I did.

But it shouldn't require the intervention of a *Senior VP* to resolve
such a problem. In any case, it doesn't scale well. How will others
who have this problem get in touch with the Senior VP?

The fact is that Intuit introduced a crappy product activation scheme
that simply causes paying customers headaches.

He promised to get back to me a while back, but I have not heard
anything yet. I still have not started my taxes, and time is going by
rapidly. I will need to start soon.

Perhaps you could ask him to re-ask his tech people to get back to me.
I also spoke with Rick Jensen, and he may be the lead on this.

Thanks for your help with this.

clicked on the button and said I wasn't satisfied so I got another
person just throw one last shot at Intuit and quit. But then this guy

The Express PIN is: [1-520-901-3125]
xxx: Can't do it. I do a lot of business travel during the week and
don't have my computer with me.
xxx: Your hours are only during business hours so I'm not home
xxx: Also it is not toll free. Just think I've already wasted 4 hours
with Intuit. A 4 hour phone call is much more expensive than TaxCut.
H. Earnie: We are here all the time for technical support
xxx: I am told that the 520-901-3125 number is only between 8AM and
6PM.
xxx: At least that is what another support guy said
H. Earnie: Using PIN number you do not have to pay anything.
xxx: And the timing is 8am to 9pm PST
xxx: What is the toll free number to access it
H. Earnie: No, but using the PIN number it will free.
xxx: How is that, I still get charged long distance?
H. Earnie: On phone they will ask you for PIN number.
xxx: And then they call me back?
H. Earnie: Yes
xxx: Ok. Do they know more stuff?
H. Earnie: Is there anything else I can help you with?
xxx: Guess not

Since the current time was 8PM PST, I called the number, guess what,
no surprise here, their office is closed. Please try your call again
later.

See ya Intuit

At least I have the satisfaction of convincing coworkers, friends, and
my dad to purchase TaxCut. They've been happy too. Granted it

I too, had a nightmare experience with TT2003, but mine would not even
update, much less print. I got tired of the hassle and returned the
program---I expected flak from the retailer (I got it---"We cannot take back
any opened programs . . .") But I was armed with a full printout of TT's
license agreement---stating to return it to the retailer. I purchased Tax
Cut, as did the other poster----I'm tired of Intuit's arrogance on the
subject (Quicken 2003 has other issues that I cannot get fixed either), so I
may soon be a total non-Intuit household, now and forevermore.

What the heck is Intuit doing that makes it so you can't print to a network
printer? I guess it's obvious that they are calling non standard Win API or
not going through the Win API at all. If there are doing it with the
printer who know where else it goes on. I guess it shows in Quicken with
their own version of MDI. The whole idea of Windows was to present a common
UI to the user. You learn one application and you pretty much know how to
navigate through all applications. The Windows UI might not be perfect but
MS spent millions developing it and works. Then a company like Intuit (and
a few others) comes along that thinks they know better and tries to push
their own version of the UI on the public. How much do this companies spend
on research on the impact of the changes? My guess is close to zero.

Same stupid game they played with me.....trying to bail out by giving me an
express PIN number and requiring me to make toll calls. I made 6 toll
calls all of which were disconnected by their automated system.

Just imagine ...... if the whole industry uses a poorly conceived and
supported Activation methodology like this. Think of the phone bills and
time lost (taking off from work) if you needed to get 30 programs
reactivated after purchasing a new computer (or HDD upgrade).

Look for software that advertises "NO ACTIVATION REQUIRED".

You mean on HIS printer with HIS OS and HIS setup. I can print to a network
printer without problems.

Looks like the standard Windows print controls to me. I can print to fax,
PDF Writer, PaperPort, anything listed.

A lot of Quicken's problems stem from the fact that it's never been complete
redone since the 16 bit days. They invented a lot of stuff on their own,
before MS did. They would do well to clean it up.

<tale of woe with tech non-support snipped>

Their tech support in this example are a bunch of idiots. Why can't they
learn the phrase "I don't know?"

Then why is it that this is not the only post to complain about network
printers and the comment is the same from tech support "network attached
printers do not work" . To tell the truth, I have not tried it myself but
it could be that it just happens to work for YOU and no one else.

"network attached printers do not work" .

I have proven that statement to be false.

I think this discussion centers around printers attached to another computer
and shared, but if it's those with their own IP addresses connected through
a JetDirect type device, I can't test that, though I can't see the
difference it would make.

I'm not doubting or blaming the user who's having problems, but simply
disputing the blanket statement that "network attached printers do not
work," and suspecting tech support is giving a "cop-out" answer insted of
helping him to troubleshoot it. At least they didn't say to re-install TT.

> To tell the truth, I have not tried it myself but

If it helps any, my printer was separated from TT by two subnets and a
router.
So it's probably not that I have a simpler setup. I also tried it from a
different computer. This time the networked laser printer wasn't installed.
But TT offers the choice to browse the network for the printer of your
choice and install it before printing. I did that, then it printed to it.

You might want to look at the thread titled "Printing from Quicken 2003 to a
networked printer" (around 12/17) to see how two users solved similar
problem with Quicken.

When you write software that uses non-standard methods, it is almost
impossible to test and allow for all possible configurations. So you
program for and test for what you think that 95% of your users will use.

The rest, if you are a company that cares, will be handled on a case by
case basis, doing almost anything to make the configuration work and
will then you will update the software to handle that configuration so
that others won't have the same problem.

Other companys, that don't care, will simply sluff it off, saying 'We
don't support that' and not make any effort to make that small segment
of customers happy;preferring the loss of customers to the extra cost of
support.

The companys always forget the fact that a large number or customers
that fit the 95% that have no problems, learn about the 5% that do; the
95% then wonders if the company won't care about them either - the next
time.
