Eve Online is starting to appeal.

Is there anyone out there willing to pen a typical 2-3 hour stint for the
benefit of us waverers? Include the things done, the things "carried
over" from the night before etc etc. How good is Eve at logging current
tasks for future "recap" etc.

Q: You're in the depths of space with a very good reputation etc etc. In
pops some weedy newbie with lots of nice gear. You look around, no one is
there. bang. Pirate the ship. Who's to know? Can you play the role of a
disguised psycho?

Well, I'll give it a try. We're a medium sized corp with a battleship
blueprint, and for the production we need rare minerals. One of these
minerals, "megacyte" is only available outside empire space in the part of
the EVE universe where there is no police or anything. Problem is that the
closest station is 10-20 jumps away. Ok, so what do we do and how do we
solve the logistics problem shipping the ore to the closest station? Well,
when we have 2-3 cruisers for protection, atleast 3 haulers, and a few to
mine, we set out. We find a good field someone in nowhere land, bring with
us plenty of ammo to keep the astroid field clear of pirates (higher end
pirates with missile cruisers and other heavier cruisers). We try to place
the haulers and miners behind some large astroid to offer protection against
incoming missiles while the people doing protection if heavily armed
cruisers or battleships are closer to the normal danger spot. The NPC
pirates will respawn every 5-45 minutes or so, so we have to stay awake and
on guard. When the missiles starts raining, seconds count. The haulers
can't take much damage, so it's important that the pirates lock onto the
ships that can take quite a few hits without major problems. Within a
couple of minutes, the fight is over and it's time to pick up the pirate
loot. We're very selective in what we take. After all, bringing in the ore
is the most important part of an operation like this. While we're at it,
other corp members join up with haulers and other support ships. During all
this time, the haulers fill up their cargo and start the trip to the closest
station. A roundtrip might take upto one hour, so having a few of them is
critical for this to work. At the end of the evening when people are tired
and ready to hit the sack, we make plans for the next day. Some go to a
planet to log off there, while others go back to the station to maybe pick
up some skills, more ammo, or whatever. The next day, we might be somewhere
else doing something else, but for the moment it usually involves mining of
some sort for minerals we need to do production of cruisers, battleships and
other items we need or sell. But we have scouts out around the clock to
find better fields, or other items of interest. Attacking secret NPC pirate
bases is quite fun and can bring in some rare loot, and we do that from time
to time. I won't reveal my ingame name, though :-)

Well, last night I had a bit of an interesting 3 or so hours. An allied
corporation was building a heavy cruiser for me, unfortunately it was
located on the _other_ side of a massive, persistent PC pirate blockade
that has been going on for a few days now. Making my way through the
15 or so jumps to the blockade, I was listening (well, watching) reports
from people inside the system the pirates were blockading, trying to get
some idea of the strength of the pirate force there. I was flying a
Rifter frigate, kitted out for speed and loaded with speed-increasing
modules for my cruiser when I got it (total value, somewhere around 400k
ISK -- my cruiser was running me closer to 10 million ISK). Turns out
the pirates were not blockading the gate in the direction I was going,
so I lucked out.

Upon reaching my destination, it turned out my cruiser was not going to
be completed for about another hour and a half. So since I was stuck there
anyway, I decided to help my allies mine. Wow. Okay, my corp is pretty
small, 10 or so people. This was a alrger corp and they had 5 cruisers
mining, all loaded with mining lasers and zillions of drones. They would
latch on to an asteroid and vaporize even a large one in a few minutes.
It was a very impressive sight.

So, after I'd spent some time mining, my cruiser was finished and it was
time to run the gauntlet. I loaded my ship up with the speed modifications
I had brought with me, and the base speed of my ship worked out to about
300 m/s; not bad for a cruiser. But then I tried testing out my afterburners
and microwarp drive to see what I could get her REALLY up to. After some
testing she managed to top out at over 4000 m/s -- more than enough to
run the blockade, I hoped. After a send off from my allies (who were
mining to build ships to attack the blockade, which they had done with
limited success earlier in the week), I turned towards Passari, the system
where the blockade was in full force.

As I approached the system, I noticed someone from a disreputable corp
in a cruiser following me through every jump; it had me a bit worried so
I powered through the next few jumps, putting some space between him and
I. My adrenaline was starting to kick in as I closed in on Passari; I
made the jump into the system and immediately went to an out of the way
moon, listening in on the local channel to hear what was going on in the
system.

It looked like most people were avoiding the system now; I didn't see
anyone there who wasn't a member of a known pirate group. However, I
did see one interesting thing -- in addition to the three pirate corps
known to be working together to blockade the system, another corp (in
fact the same one to which that guy who had been following me belonged)
was evidently moving in and camping the other gate, much to the
displeasure of the original blockaders.

Deciding to take the chance now and run the gauntlet, I set course for
the blockaded gate and ran for it. Hitting my MWD and ABs just before
leaving warp, I shot into the space around the gate; after an unbearable
lag (because the pirate corps are using the rather despicable metagaming
tactic of seeding the gate with cargo pods to lag people, which I really
hope the devs fix and soon) my ship flew past the four or five cruisers
sitting around the gate, crossed the 20 km to the gate in 5 seconds, and
made the jump. I was through, and those pirate bastards probably didn't
even have time to see who I was. >:)

The rest of the trip was pretty uneventful, and I made it home with no
trouble. I have to say that the time I was in Passari, my blood was
rushing. As much as I wish the devs would fix problems with combat as
it is right now (the cargo pod lag and the insane amount of damage weapons
can do compared to ships' defenses means if you can't do what I did, and
instead have to cross the distance to the gate at a more reasonable speed,
you are most likely doomed -- and any attacking force must be overwhelming
and even then will take much heavier losses than the defenders), Eve is
fun, and the constant threat that PvP poses is part of the excitement.

Well, in 0.0 space, if you did that, your security rating shouldn't change.
However, the newbie will probably tell everyone what a bastard you are once
he emerges with his new clone, and faction rating (your relation to the
governments and corporations of Eve) may change based on attacks, even in
0.0 space. This doesn't affect too much yet, but supposedly it will make
much more of a difference as the devs continue to work on the game.

Passari is a death trap right now... 94 Pod Kills in the last 2 days....

Passari, Poitot, Amamake, and Obe seem to be rotating death traps; at any one
time, 3 of the 4 are being camped by rabid playerkillers with nothing better
to do that sit at gates with 400 cargo pods around them (for "camouflage") and
slaughter any helpless ship that flies by. Passari's the worst though, since
it's a 60 jump trip through 0.0 space to get to the other side if you can't go
through it.

Has the situation improved at these gates?

Yes, only Obe has some pirate activity still. Empire space has been
restricted with sentry guns at all gates, which will fire on any player
with a securiy rating of -5.0 or less. Basically means the most notorious
griefers are now outside empire space. Resourceful corps outside empire
space have in the last few days killed a number of pirate battleships,
without taking any major causaltis themselves, so players are stepping up to
the threat now.

Here are some Story Posts from =EVE=

Eccholos:

I ran across some random pirate trying to blockade a gate in Molden
Heath once, I think it was Gelfiven or Altar. Anyway he's camped out
real close to the gate and when I warped in the gate was between us.
So he locks on and opens fire. Of course, he hit the gate instead.

I love sentry guns.

Didn't catch his name because I was laughing too hard and the AP was
still on.

Another time, posix caught me at the Otalieto gate in Aunenen in my
hoarder. He was in a Blackbird so of course he strips off my shields
and half my armor in nothing flat and he's got me webbed and
scrambled. So he opens a convo and wants a toll or he'll kill my ship.
Normally I'd have told him to take the ship and cram it, but I had a
big load of minerals for my factories. So I stall a few seconds and
ask how much he wants and watch the range-to-gate counting slowly
down. He wants a mill, so I stall a few more seconds and ask if I can
make a deal for less. And the range clicks down to 11km and the lovely
"Jump" option appears on the menu. He opens fire again, realizing that
I'm going to get away from him.

I pop out the other side of the gate with 3.1% structure and him right
behind me and believe you me I had the menu up with a planet ready to
warp to before I finished entering space. I've never seen an indy get
into warp so fast before, he never even locked me. So I spent the next
half hour taunting him for not being able to knock down a hoarder.

I felt obligated to increase his bounty. ;)

Cro Ramel (Pirate):

Alright so I had been camping the B-VIP9 gate in Egbinger all day
charging 300k to cruisers/indies and 200k (often free) for frigates.
Was a boring day no reason to blockade that gate but hey one of my
corp mates was out there so it was kind of fun.

Towards the end of the day I docked and got myself some dinner. I came
back to my computer once to check a skill and I recognized a name on
local. Name will be withheld to protect to foolishness. Anyway it was
someone I had talked with a bunch on the forums. They asked what M3G4
was doing out this way and I said nothing. They insisted I must be
blockading something and I said I wasn't. Anyway I heard the ping of
the microwave and went to the kitchen and had a bowl of soup came back
in like 8-10 minutes to see the person had paged me asking what my
toll was. I said 300k. It was sent to my account fairly quickly. I
laughed as I was still sitting in a station at the time. I quickly
undocked and warped to the gate and a minute later the person came by
happy to not being fired on. I love easy money. Only toll I got all
day and I wasn't at the jumpgate. Cro out!

Skelator (Me):

I was doing my 3X daily security sweep of our home Gslaxy Ore Fields
when a Threat Light started flashing Yellow on my tactical counsole.
I emmediately put down my latest copy of Jove-Girl and started
scanning the area.
Coming in HOT was a Thorax State of the Art Cruiser.
Now being the Sentimental type of guy that I am, I was still operating
a Older Vexor Cruiser. The Vexor as you ALL know is a capable medium
cruiser Not a Assault powerhouse per se but Tons of Cargo Room for all
those nice Pirate droppings.
Well anyway back to the story..The Thorax slowed about 40 out and sat
there waiting , I knew he was scanning me so I emmediately hit my
Tactical scanners and displayed the Pilot info.

WANTED was pasted across the ID Pic that flashed up on the tactical
monitor along with a BOUNTY ALERT showing a Huge 2.8 Million Dollar
Bounty.

As I was reading this information The Tactical Threat light changed
from flashing Yellow to Flashing Red.... The Arch Villain had locked
weapons onto my ship.
My Tactical computer automatically tripped its defense program and i
Automatically locked onto him..
Wait what is that diamond shaped box showing up on the main viewing
screen.
I Zoomed in on it and it said TORPEDO.
I yelled Torpedo in the Water(old pre space Term) and ordered my ship
into evasive manuevers.
Now a Torpedo threat caught from 40 k out is easy to break if you do
it early enough ;).
I engaged afterburner and did the TallsWorthy Manuever (Prepare to
Ram) and closed the space between our ships very quickly.
He fired his weapons once and warped out.
I took a chance and warped to the stargate he had been pointed at and
Lo and Behold he was there ONLY 5 k away from where I jumped out at I
emmediately opened fire with 1ion cannons and 3 250 Hybrid Railguns
and took his shields down to 1/4. He was intitally shocked and I got a
second volley into his side taking his shields all the way down and
tearing into his armor Plating before he responded WHOA!!! his one
volley took out my shields and nicked my armor in one shot!!!
(Insert) as I was warping to gate to try and find him i had put in a
call to my corp channel for assistance.
I Panicked at the Terrible damage he had wrought on me in one volley
and hit the F5 button by mistake thinking it was my ion cannon it
Wasnt......
It was a Energy Nuetralizer 1 I had just stuck into the slot and
forgot about.. I kept pounding the f5 button thinking my Vexor was
Toast as I heard the Engineering computer start informing me that my
CAP was empty and not enough power to Fire weapon but I WAS STILL
ALIVE and the Pirate wasnt moving or firing back at me.
I then realized what Button I was pushing and kept pushing it as I got
bits of cap power then My Corpmates starting warping into the area
along with 2 other Brother Corps and they proceeded to Destroy the
Pirate.
In his droppings from the destroyed ship was a PROTYPE 250 Gauss a IF
Fueled afterburner a A-heavy Nuetron Particle Cannon and 8 Heavy
Combat Drones.
What a Lot of Goodness for my efforts.
Now I Never leave home without that Energy Nuetralizer NOT EVER!

Now where did that Jove-Girl mag go???
