I know it's more strat that sim but I figured I'd ask in this group
anyway. I was going to get ORB, but figured I give Hegemonia a try
first. I also picked up Project Earth on the cheap. Since I can't play
either of these till after this weekend due to work I was wondering if
any in here played any of the above, and what they thought.

BTW, Bang! Gunship Elite was on the shelf for $4.99, I was wondering
whether it was even remotely worth this price or would I be happier
getting a hero sandwhich and a pepsi for that price. TIA

STAY AWAY FROM HEGEMONIA.

Stupidest storyline and writing I've seen in a long, long, long time.

Practically no strategy. All military encounters are scripted - ships suddenly
appear somewhere out of nowhere to serve the purposes of the (mornic)
storyline.

The game was made by the French, and it shows very badly. Hey! Here's a good
diea! Let's send a colony ship with a million people on it through a wormhole
with no idea what kind of solar system is at the other end! Probes are for
wimps! Hey, here's a better idea! This just-explored region of space is
crawling with giant space monsters and suicidally aggressive pirates, so
obviously it's a great place to put up a space station retirement home for a
bunch of rich old folks! Oh, and we'll make the station commander a
grey-haired bitch with an attitude! The player witll SURELY want to rescue
this station when it gets in trouble!

Speaking of space aliens, Mr. Never-Heard-Of-You NPC Dude seems to think he has
to authorize me to shoot at it. Fuck you, buddy. If this was a REAL game his
ship would be in the game so I could shoot HIM down instead and not have to
listen to his yap.

Speaking of pirates, they talk with an American redneck accent. You're
obviously supposed to feel superior to them. Feel free to take this discussion
off into tangents about Iraq and the UN and the EU's attitude towards each as
compared to the US now.

Suspension of disbelief is actively avoided. Saturn's rings brush the asteroid
belt. Neptune is just beyond.

Hegemonia is that really hot-looking girl in high school who, once you actually
talked to her, did nothing but giggle and say "like, wow!" the whole time. And
if you want to extend the analogy to bed, well then she just lay there and
didn't do anything.

So you liked the game then?

Bang! Gunship Elite is an arcadish space sim. very nice graphics,
especially it's been out since a while. 5 bucks? go ahead, it's the type
of game you play when you can't figure out what you want to play.

p.s. Enemies have a russian-like accent and black and red ships. How
typical ...

O.R.B. is very ponderous and it's not got enough of a time compression
to deal with some really predictable and dull phases. (ie. lots and
lots of ZZZZ)

But this is coming from someone who cut their teeth on Homeworld.
Other than the lethargic nature of ORB i'd recommend it.

(i heard really bad things about Hegemon-whatitsname and i also trust
Transit's opinion on things so i'd say dump it)

It may be the stupidest storyline he's ever seen... but it's far from
the worst out there. I'm enjoying it.

Maybe he only played the demo. Or maybe he's not paying attention.
"Oh look, a ship jsut appeared on the edge of my radar range. That
means it appeared out of no where!" Did you ever think of sending out
scout out in the direction it seemed to be coming from? Maybe you'll
find a secret military base out there. I did on the mission where i,
at first, thought ships were coming out of nowhere. I'm 80% done the
game now and NEVER do they appear out of thin air. They're always
produced at a base of some sort or they've been wandering around
outside of your radar range since the beginning of the scenario.

Is this guy trolling? Mr. Never-Heard-Of-You NPC dude is your
commanding officer. Sure he may be the sharpest pencil in the bunch
but he's still fine.

The interface and scale is way off. But it's just right to make the
game fun.

Anyway. The game is full of little flaws, but what game isn't.
Overall it's Great fun. Visuals, Audio, and gameplay. I like it.
Others don't. He can hat it if he want's, i just thought i'd give
another opinion. Just wait until you see the the effect of quantum
blasters hitting your shields. Then continue to be awed as you
destroy his battleship with a well co-ordinated attack from behind
with Proton weapons that penetrate through shields.

Just my 2 cents.

ahem. Kevin? why don't you STFU and take yer fanboi arse back to
reality. Your stupid gushing over that game suckered me into checking
it out for myself just to see if Transit was a bit harsh.

omfg. :puke:
okay, i need a shower. that's like being forced to watch Starship
Troopers with extra caffeine for the primadonna actors&actresses. holy
shit! Everything Transit said was true. And if you think i'm gonna buy
that BS about the retail being any different? lol

as for cosmetic stuff? jeezuz. let's start with the ORB clone crap.
they have planets you can zoom around and watch orbit, with asteroid
belt kinda stuff (all just like orb, right?) they even have an intro
that's almost a spitting image of ORB's...there command interface
(GUI) even looks alike. IT CERTAINLY LOOKS LIKE A CHEAP RIPOFF! feels
like it too. Cool explosions my hairy arse! and as for "attack runs"??
omg. just really. it's shit...though i suppose if ORB or homeworld
never existed i'd oooo and aaah, so i guess i'm spoilt. LOL The worst
bit is the damned planet orbits. it's all fine and good that i see
saturn earth mars uranus and neptune with verrrrry slow orbit tracks
around the sun and i'll ignore the convenience of them all in
alignment nor will i quibble about distance scaling. But, what i'll
bitch about is WHERE THE FUCK IS JUPITER! NOT ONLY THAT, THE SOLAR
SYSTEM SEEMS TO THINK IT DOESN'T EXIST AND SATURNS IN IT'S PLACE!

As for technical complains? WTF there's a reverse x axis for mouse but
no freakin Y axis reverse? ORB and homeworld have it normal but i'm
stuck with some @%@# cockmonger telling me it's impossible? Oh, i must
say being able to focus and stuff is neat but WTF i can't focus on
enemy ships? didn't see it in F1 and i suppose they'll correct that
major boo boo.

gaaaaaaaah.

You think my response was one of a "fanboi" and that i was "gushing"?
Did you read it? Pretty much everything i said was along the lines of
"It's not bad". I didn't say "It's amazing" or "You gotta try this".
I said "I'm enjoying it".

I also pointed out that he was wrong in saying that ship appeared out
of nowhere and that you get orders from characters you've never heard
of. At least in the full game that doesn't happen.

I did mention one thing i loved, the graphical effect of the shield.
But even that was hardly "gushing".

Seeing as how i've never played Homeworld or ORB, i guess i wouldn't
know anything about this.

But the one thing i DO like about Hegemonia is that it's not your
typical RTS. I hate all RTSs that revolve around your harvesting of
gold/wood/rock/food/minerals/etc. I'm betting that both Homeworld
and ORB have too much emphasis on this just like all the ground based
RTS games.

The documentation for the game does suck. I agree. But you CAN do
anything to do with "focus" on an enemy ship that you can do with your
own. Select it, watch it, Zoom in on it, track it, see first person
out of it, etc. Unless you know of some other "focus" command that i
don't even know about. And why do you want to reverse the mouse in a
game like this?

> gaaaaaaaah.

Plenty of things wrong with it. Mundane dialog. Scale of planet
orbits. Missing planets. Fighters become useless once you get larger
ships. But it was still fun. And there's already a good rebalancing
mod out that fixes a whole lot of complaints about weapons strenght
and the fact that smaller ships become obsolete once you get larger
ones. Gives a whole new dimention to the game.

The only things i can say you are *wrong* about is that ships don't
appear out of nowhere, they introduce all the characters properly in
the full game, and you can zoom in on enemy ships. Other than that,
you hate it and i like it. Just thought i'd let other people know
that it isn't quite as bad as transit said.

well, all i can say is that you certainly made a decent enough case
for me to check it out for myself the first time.

As for your latest reply? Well, you come across sincere as hell, but i
stand behind my opinion that yer a gushing fanboi. (even though you
claim to be cooly objective)
