Derek was behaving himself fairly well over on the QuarterToThree forums. Then
he just had to stick his foot in his mouth when he said, "NO space sim since
Freespace has outsold ANY BC title."

http://www.quartertothree.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2319&postdays=0&postorder=a
sc&start=90

Others said they didn't believe it and he got all haughty. Well people asked for
some facts to back up his claim and he said that he wasn't going to provide any,
that the onus was (of course) on others to disprove his outrageous statements.
People didn't seem to accept this so he got even more bothered and posted a link
proving that he was wrong. I then tried to explain to Derek that he was blowing
it. (As did some other detractor which Derek was convinced was me.) Then a guest
showed up that purported to be a game developer that absolutely loved BCM but
hated me with an overriding passion. (It really hurt my fragile feelings but
with therapy, I'm hoping to make a full recovery within a year or two.) This
guest had an amazing knowledge of the ancient history of the Flame War Follies
and seemed inclined to repeat Derek's old lies but, it couldn't have been Derek
in disguise because he hadn't ever played BC3K1.0 or 2.0!

Well the bottom line is that Derek has apparently disappeared from
QuarterToThree and I just wanted to explain to him that I was only trying to
help him face the truth.

Derek, come on back and we can chat about it. XOOXXOX

I don't see this anywhere in the thread you linked to. Which post,
specifically?

Given how he views the world, he's actually being consistent, and making some
sense. I don't personally agree with how he says things most of the time, and
I wouldn't take the numbers he claims for granted, but this particular
discussion isn't worth making an issue of.

I believe it was Mark Twain who once said, "you don't have to remember
anything if you tell the truth"...But someone else noted famously
that, "really good liars can remember alot"

Specifically I was talking about TrollBeater's posts.

I agree that Mr. Smart strives for consistency. I also agree that from his view
he probably feels that he succeeded here. It was the TrollBeater alias that
tickled my fancy in this thread.

i think the only reason he's calm and laid back is because Huffman
fucked up and got carried away. But, you see this is where your foot
gets planted in yer mouth, Transit. Notice how Huffman acknowledges
with almost zero prompting that he made a mistake and apologized for
it. When have you ever seen DS do that before?

He might have appeared to make that mistake deliberately with malice
and ill-will, but i think he's proven more calm and laid-back about
the whole thing alot more than you think DS has acted that whole
thread.

Tell you something else, Transit. the last time i heard someone
describe DS as calm and laid back was well...never.

True, but why is he relatively so laid back and calm? MajorFreak had a theory
that it was because I had errored. This is a reasonable enough theory but I feel
it doesn't go far enough. My recollection is that after signing the deal with
Interplay, Mr. Smart went through a period of relative calm. I have the same
recollection after the deal with EB although it was not as pronounced or as long
of a "calm period". My guess is that either DreamCatcher said something to him
or he is thinking that they may say something to him if he should "act up".

Evidence that I believe supports my theory is:
1. Derek was being relatively calm before I showed up.
2. I believe that TrollBeater was a Derek alias and he had TrollBeater say what
Derek really wanted to say but felt for some reason that he shouldn't.
3. The post where Derek said that he has been labeled unfairly as a kook in the
past due to responding to accusations seemed staged like he was playing to
another unseen audience.
4. Derek has a strong tendency to believe that he's the center of everyone's
universe. This means that he may be concerned that the DreamCatcher suits are so
interested in him that they are around every corner watching what he does so, he
feels concerned/intimadated by this. It makes him feel that he's now playing to
an audience that he is extra desparate in wanting to impress. I now guess that
he may have even started up that thread to try and impress them.

I have a hypothesis. A hypothesis that tells me most people are aware
of the "Lurker peanut gallery" when they post and try to sway this
'audience' more than they try to win a debate. This hypothesis is most
evident in troll posts where you see them say the same lie, or build
on one, that has been repeatedly proven false in the past.

I believe P.T.Barnum said it best, "There's a sucker borne every
minute"

My theory on Derek Smart's strategy is he's trying to use the SPAM
tactic to sell a game...he doesn't need to "win" debates at all, since
any news is good news. (i suppose Huffman's correct about his new
publishers having a more calming affect on DS than a simple mistake by
a mere mortal, who grovelled appropriately)

LOL i don't know what's funnier. the picture of DS imagining BH
grovelling or the picture of a publisher for DS. (the former i guess,
because the latter is like watching the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre")

I think it's a line from the movie. Spartacus is a Roman gladiator or maybe a
slave?

Actually, Kirk Douglas said that line. He wasn't *really* Spartacus,
see, but he's an actor and he was *portraying* Spartacus in the movie.
It was his job to convincingly behave as if he really were Spartacus.

So, the question you have to ask yourself is this: are you Kirk
Douglas, or are you Smartacus? (I'll grant you it's not as good as
"The Lady or the Tiger," but it's the best I can do at the moment).

Looks like a *BING* to me. But I must caution you that "Guy Under The Bridge"

oh give me a break. that's the funniest! lol. LOL!!! I'm sure now that
Mr.Asher has confessed they don't do IP checks that's code for,
"sockpuppet time!" in Derek sp33k.

Anyways, i am curious why he actually thinks you "HATE" derek smart. I
guess he's saying anyone that devotes a large portion of their day
hunting down DS' prolific posting style has waaaaaaay too much time on
their hands and is doing something most normal citizens consider
obsessive. I'm curious as to why Mr.Asher takes you seriously and yet
gives the nod to DS as a peer. (What was that Godfather quote again?
"don't hate your enemy it clouds yer judgement"?)

WTF is with the "i know all about IP addresses crap!"? Who cares who's
saying what!? jeezuz christ! The funniest thing about that sockpuppet
accusation stuff is it's being done in a post created by The Supreme
Commander. The irony is delicious.

Personally, i find DS to be a cliched, boring conspiracy nut and the
only entertainment is reading his detractor's statements (you know:
the ones with 'content'). Don't quit your dayjob though. A comedian
you ain't. (BTW, who the fuck do Sinner & Chet think they are?

I've said it before, my biggest fan is me and I think I'm hilarious. I must
continue as long as my biggest fan is enjoying my work.

A very selfless attitude B ll. I commend you.
I think it's your modesty and self-effacing shyness that most appeals
to your biggest fan.

Sorry, but I don't handle paradoxes very well. Not on Tuesdays, at any
rate.

You give me far too much credit.

Given the context, "SMARTACUS" would have been slightly better, IMHO,
but I thank you nonetheless.

His rants seem closer to Joe Bsfilter rants to me. (No insult intended even
though I almost launched into a anti-Joe rant myself just thinking about it, wow
another close call.)

Yes but my biggest fan is admitedly overwhelmed at times with appealing
attributes to choose from as you point out, the least of which is not my modesty
and self-effacing shyness.

Actually, the funniest would be if DS actually realized how useless
arguing on the net is a long time ago and invented BHuffman (you know:
"huff and puff") just to be his worst enemy on the "any news is good
news"

Isn't that just the sickest thought? i go wash my mouth out now.

It is a theme that has mulled over on occasion in the past.

Funny you saying that, that's exactly what I thought. The rants often
display that enigmatic quality of being trenchant, surreal, accurate
and wildly inaccurate all in a single sentence. I wish I could write
like that, it's sooooo. . . esoteric.

And I don't know why you're suddenly being Mr self-control, just let
it all out Bill, all this repression will stunt your growth.

I don't care what you say ... MF is definitely DerekK Smart.

How do I know? Well, I accused him of it, and he didn't deny it. Oh,
yeah, he provided a seventeen thousand page dossier, but frankly, I
haven't bothereed to read it - and nor would you. But he's definitely
hiding behind an alias, and therefore I intend to invade his IP
address - with or without UN (Usenet Nobodies) backing. And when I've
invaded, I'll lock him up in a birdcage, refuse to tell him why, and
refuse to let him see his attorney, his family, or even Nick from the
FBI.

That'll show him.

Well I fully support your stand here, especially because if you don't
do it he'll just continue to spam his own people via torture,
oppression and totalitarianism. Go and get the bastard I say. Make it
as quick and clean as you can certainly but sometimes the ends do
justify the means.
