without a doubt.. the best is IMHO Frontier: First Encounters!!! Most probably
THE best space-sim/rpg/simulation of it's kind ever coded!
If you are unfamilar with the game then check it out.. I suggest getting JJFFE
2.08 if u want the game to run in windoze, and I think JJ even has a linux
version and a DOS-DMPI version or some such...
google search the alt.fan.elite newsgroup for details on the game, the mods and
the legend...
The most recent offerings in that style are:
Terminus (Vicarious Visions)
http://www.vvisions.com/terminus/index.html
Tachyon: The Fringe (Novalogic)
http://www.novalogic.com/games/TTF/
X: Beyond the Frontier (Egosoft)
http://www.beyondthefrontier.com/
IWar2: Edge of Chaos (Particle Systems)
http://www.independencewar.com/
X-Wing Alliance (LucasArts)
http://www.lucasarts.com/products/alliance/default.htm
Battlecruiser Millenium (3000AD)
http://www.3000ad.com
Most of these offer some combination of scripted missions
and random flying about, exploring, or doing trade runs. BCM
is a bit unusual in that it follows the open-ended gameplay
model but has you commanding a large military starship plus
an assortment of support craft.
You should probably also look into Freelancer from Digital
Anvil, to be published by Microsoft next spring.

Well the elite series comes to my mind.
Privateer 2
X
Homeworld
Jumpgate
Avoid Tachyon the Fringe. It looks like it were freeform, but mostly it
isn't. It is a good game IMHO, but not what you look for.

Freelancer MIGHT be the most Privateer-like game on the horizon though.

Thanks for recommending I-War 2!
There are quite a few mods now which make I-War 2 more free-form, more like
Privateer used to be. The fan-site www.i-war2.com has the best selection of
mods.

Hmmm...I loved Privateer1. (i hated priv2; never played the
wingcommander games)
If you liked privateer1 you might have gotten tired of the SP game and
wished for multiplayer. If i guessed right and you're not THAT leary
of the MMOG genre, head on over and check out this introduction to
JumpGate (milo seems to have "forgotten" about that game)

(player testimonials. no hype. period)
