I had hoped to copy these to CD using the SPDIF-digital OUT on the STR8-80
into my computer's SPDIF-in port.
STR8-80 (LP/78 turntable with digital-out connection)

I opened the settings box to UNLOCK the SPDIF connection.
Problem: When I cue an LP into the system (Win XP) all I hear is
"chipmunks," like I'm playing it on 78 RPM. (However, I "hear" the
mechanical (scratch) audio when I put my ear to the turntable so I know I'm
at correct speed.
I'm pretty sure the tone arm isn't set perfectly, but I don't understand why
I am not getting fidelity through my PC?

In your windows audio settings make sure Line In and Record are not muted
or the volume turned way down. You may also have to ground your turntable to
your computer. Some good info here

Must be some kind of misunderstanding about sample rates.
SP/DIF inputs generally lock on the input sample rate, even if the sample
rate settings are wrong in the PC. Strangely enough the STR8-80 instruction
manual

does not seem to specify the sample rate of the turntable's digital output!
My best guess is that its sample rate is 44.1 KHz.
If you set your PC's SP/DIF input to some other sample rate than 44.1 KHz,
then the tone of LPs you record will be shifted. In your case it seems like
maybe you have it set to 48 KHz, which would shift tones up the scale.

recording side (Cool Edit) but did not take turntable into account.

deserve points for countenancing the slow-loading Stanton Web site. I have
hair that grows faster than those pages load!
The good news is that you can use Cool Edit to fix your existing .wav files.
Just pull them up, change the sample rate to 48 KHz with Edit, adjust
sample rate, and then resample to 44.1 KHz using Edit, convert sample type
(setting maximum quality).

No, just a guy who got bit this way by a DAT machine some years ago. It's
not hard to inadvertently make a DAT tape where the actual sample rate
changes between 44 & 48 for various chunks of music. If you transcribe the
tape to a computer via SP/DIF, you can easily end up with a .wav file with a
certain sample rate, but the pitch changes among the various chunks of
music. The solution is to break up the chunks and correct the sample rate
using the procedures described above.
