HSP 56 Micromodem Troubles On Redhat 7.1

Have been trying to get the hsp modem to work under the kppp dialler for
logging onto the Internet, but it just seems to say "sorry modem busy".

I have tried the same under various ports and it either comes up with
the same message or "cannot find modem". The modem is installed under
com3 so have tried ttys2 and all the ttys* numbers.
I have seen various answers to this with support for older kernels (does
it work for newer versions?) but only a temporary measure. As you have
to keep typing in at a terminal window "insmod -f pctel" on start up.

Has anybody come across the same thing and found a more permanent
solution other than scrapping the modem, -any ideas?

Last month bought a usrobotics serial modem from John Lewis in
Peterborough. Worked straight out of the box with Mandrake 8.0.

Pleased with it so bought my wife a better model (voice/fax etc) to
replace her 33.6 pace. Even almost makes IE go. :-)

There is no other way apart from scrapping the thing. There are various
software drivers, but I wouldn't bother. Software modems are just glorified
sound cards, really.

What happens when you recompile the driver source? (Not that
I would be able to help you, but someone might...)

Which driver source do you have?

The source I have compiles and works fine on a PCChips BK-VIA-MVP4
running kernel 2.2.16-22 ... Not yet tried to compile it on a more
recent kernel...
