Just why would such a question be asked in this group?

It is, not to my knowledge anyway, not connected to royalty per se.

K is an illness that can strike anyone in any rung on the
social ladder.

I know a mother, daughter combination who are (were)
extremely wealthy who were both Kleptos. It is a sad

In one of the biographies that I've read of Queen Mary, (I think it
was Anne Edwards' "Matriarch") if the Queen was a guest in a home, and
spied an object that took her fancy, she would stand in front of it
and very pointedly say "I am caressing it with my eyes". Forthwith,
the object was usually offered as a gift. Queen Mary rarely left a
stately home without these "gifts".

I read that book. If I'm not mistaken, it also said that before she showed
up, her hosts would hide everything they thought she might be interested
in -- usually anything to do with George III -- just so they wouldn't end up
giving it to her after she "admired" it.

As Ambrose Bierce, my favorite philosopher hath said:

Kleptomaniac, (N)* a rich thief.

In other words, If you steal something because you are poor and truly NEED
it, you are a criminal and will be sentenced to prison.

On the other hand if you are rich and steal something, you can hire
expensive lawyers and psychiatrists who will attest that you have a
psychological problem, and you will be forgiven.

If Queen Mary was that acquisitive, then why was anyone crazy enough to
invite her to his or her home?

This whole business of royalty and worship of royalty is insane. The
French had the right idea when they chopped off the head of Louis XVI.

Cromwell also had the right idea when he ordered the head of Charley the
First to be chopped off. Unfortunately, because Cromwell was also such a
killjoy, the English went wrong after the death of Cromwell. It's too bad
that the English have given up capital punishment. The future Charles III
could be greatly improved by this treatment.
