MP3 Playback problems

I need a little help with a problem.

I recently had to re-install all my software and files from scratch (format
c:, re-install Windows, all other software, copy my mp3's from backup etc)

Now when I play mp3's back thru WinAmp the playback sounds a bit like the
chipmunk's !

I have a p4 1.7ghz Intel, using the on-board sound Avance AC97 Audio, Window
98SE, WinAmp3

Any ideas ?

Go to Control Panel-->[Multimedia]->[Audio}->"Playback"->Advanced
Properties"->[Performance] and move Hardware acceleration to "None". OK, then
go back into Properties to make sure the change stuck.

Gradually move Hardware Acceleration towards full until WinAmp 3 stops working
again, slide acceleration back a notch.

I followed your instructions but it did not help. Current setting was
"Full", I went back to "None" and tried every setting back to "Full"

WinAmp worked on all settings, even after a re-boot the problem still
exists.

Another observation is that my monitor display now has a slight
"flicker/wobble" as well.

Any other settings I could try before taking my PC back to the Retailer (He
was the one that did the re-build) ?

WinAmp 3 works on my Win98SE only without hardware acceleration.
Version 2.81 works fine with full acceleration, as do other media players, so I
don't bother with version 3, except to check these settings before posting.

Check that you have the latest audio driver files, reinstall driver. Then try
the hardware acceleration bit again if it still plays too fast.

Another possibility is WinAmp 3 not liking whatever version of DirectX is
currently installed on your system.

In regards to monitor flicker, have you tried a refresh frequency higher than
60hz (and that is compatible with your monitor and display card)? Be sure that
correct drivers for the adapter are being used, otherwise, available refresh
rates may not be available to choose from.

DirectX could have an effect on display too.

To check which version of DirectX you have and to run tests, go to Windows
Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Information. Click on
dropdown menu "Tools" and "DirectX Diagnostic Tools". The manual for your
display adaptor should specify DirectX version compatibility. DirectX is one of
those Windows programs that is a pain in the neck to roll back a version if the
latest doesn't work properly.

You may want to avoid messing with DirectX. If different drivers don fix audio
problem, ask your retailer to install a PCI audio card and disable on-board
audio chip.

hi Kev - just a thought - we used Winamp3 for a while but re-installed
version 2.81 yesterday - this is probably the most stable version &
many ppl seem to prefer it over 3 - we found 3 was prone to errors -
search for it in google - there are many dl sources - good luck

Or try something other than Winamp.. I have been using MusicMatch
Jukebox 6 for years, no problems at all, but my system just does not
like Winamp.

Thanks for the replies.

When I had to re-install everything, not being a teckkie, I went back to the
retailer who sold me my PC with the all my original software CD's etc and
had it re-built .

I did not notice the Sound Effects Manager (by Avance Logic) icon in the
system tray , and the guy's who re-built the software did not mention
anything "extra" had been added.

Now this is where the red face comes in .

When I maximized it, under the KaraOK heading, a setting of +2 was against a
field called Key (with Up and Down arrows). When the cursor is placed over
the arrows the descriptions Pitch Up / Pitch Down are displayed. Reset it to
zero and amazingly sound is ok

Cannot find any doco about what it does and how it operates , but everything
is Ok so I am leaving "well enough alone"
