(btw, does anyone know if dvd drives for pc's also have that region

Thanks. That's something that never happened to bother me before, as I never wanted any dvd that
wasn't released here. I didn't really know what that was about.

For some reason, you guys over in the States get movies released on DVD
before us, while we tend to get a better deal where TV to DVD releases hit
our shelves first - sometimes you don't ever get them!

Has been discussed indefinetely in this ng when the season 1 set came
out. It's all about syndication so better get a regionfree DVD player...

The reason is media owners are always thinking about "how much profit is
left" in a piece of entertainment.

Movies are released in the US before, say, the UK, and so, the studios have
milked out most of a movie's theater-revenue-making ability in the US but
not the UK. So, they send it out on DVD in Region 1, but it has potential
to make money in the UK, so they release the movie there, then do the DVD
later. (I'm not really sure why they don't do global releases, except maybe
so they can concentrate their marketing efforts better and spread out the
movie openings so the celebrities can show up at more of them.)

For TV, some shows like Futurama have potential to rake in more advertising
revenue when it goes into syndication, so they hold up on the DVD release in
the US because they can still sell the series to all the local networks. I
guess in other countries, there is a smaller syndication market.

*tangent ahead*

Something similar that's really annoying is how baseball broadcasts are
handled in the US. If a home game is not sold out, they usually don't air
it on TV so people are basically given the ultimatum of "if you want to see
the game, enough of you need to fill the ballpark before the rest of you can
watch." What bothers me even more is that I can't listen to my home team
play via Internet radio because the "copyright holders" (Major League
Baseball) don't want to air it, presumably so it forces people to watch the
TV broadcast (boosting ratings and ad sales). But if I'm on the other side
of the country, I get nothing. Another thing that doesn't affect me as much
but affects a lot of people is the movement of baseball to cable and
gradually over to pay-extra-cable.

Ahh, baseball, one of the all time great 'most confusing American sports'
of all time LOL :op

We have a game in the UK called 'rounders', baseball seems to be a
glorified version of that...

Ahh yes but one hour and one half just doesn't roll off the tongue quite the
same.

Iron Chef. It's the closest thing to a sport that I can really get behind.

Baseball, despite being the "national pastime," is not for everybody. If
you have little patience, attention span, or are easily bored and have a
weak constitution, then you should instead watch the highlight reels on ESPN
/ Fox Sports. =D

Otherwise, sit through a good chunk of a good game, and you'll see what it's
all about. It's true that a lot of it is "boring," but you could make the
same argument for watching soccer, basketball, hockey, whatever (I'm not
making those claims, well maybe for soccer, hehe).

Last night, I got to see the end of two good games: Braves vs. Phillies, and
Dodgers vs. Giants (WHOO!). Both games had very intense ninth innings.

Plus, you gotta watch Bonds (The Legend) play. He's ridiculous. =)

I bought mine off bluelight.com for $99 USD. I'm not sure if they still
carry them, but I think walmart.com does.
