There are widely divergent reports as to how popular Saddam Husayn really is
with his own people. I was wondering if someone could give me some insights
into this.

Preference will be given to the opinions of those not living in fear of the
Iraqi government.

Matt

Why not travel to Iraq, and see on your own eyes, how popular he is.Ask
any small child, or any women or old people. They worship him like he is the
God.They respect him., they know who is the enemy of Iraq, and why the US
hate Saddam so much. They
know the truth.

Naum, you are engaging in a praxis of propaganda. You said what
Iraqis do not like Saddam Hussein? Many of them do not like Saddam
Hussein. I have known many who do not. Remember, he is a dictator and
has put at risk the lives of many Iraqis and has killed Shia and Kurd
leaders. Many Iraqis have lost relatives to the regime. They can not
easily remove Saddam Hussein. More than one attempt has been made to
remove Saddam Hussein.

Sure, people like you, they will hate everybody.
What about if the Iraqi people remove you, you are the enemy of the Iraqi
people.

Naum, I happen to be a former resident of Kuwait and originally a
Palestinian (Canadian citizen), and I will tell you Saddam Hussein is
liked by certain Iraqis who benefit from privileges, but the majority of
Iraqis silently despise him. The Iraqis I have met despise him and as far
as the protests they are organized by the government. Many Iraqis
privately curse Saddam. Saddam has also killed some of his own relatives.
Saddam is corrupt. Just because people are clapping for Saddam does not
mean the people have Democracy, like him. That is false. You said your
father lived in Iraq. Ask him about the mass execution of the Communists
in Iraq. There is only one political party allowed to exist in Iraq, so
do not tell me about people liking Saddam.

Basil Naum and all,
We can't take a vote currently in Iraq, so I don't think this argument
will be solved for a long time, if at all. I'd be interested to know if
Iraqis and what portion of them support Saddam Hussein, but I think that
people see things differently, and so I'll really never know. I could go
there, and that would be the closest to knowing that I'd ever get. I do
know however that Saddam has lots of Shiites to deal with. I don't think
many Shiites like him from what I've heard. Shiites make up either 60 or 70
percent of the Iraqi population. So maybe it's not a majority. What I'd
like to know is how did the elections take place in Iraq. I mean how were
they setup, and all of that. Anyone know? Well that's my view.

Always the U.S are preaching, under the "Democracy" they must be multi

I basically adopt French semiologist Jean Baudrillard's view when it comes
to the U.S. and Saddam: "One of the two adversaries is a rug salseman, the
other an arms salesman: they have neither the same logic nor the same
strategy, even though they are both crooks."

The enemy of my enemy isn't necessarily my friend. The only "leaders" I
reserve judgment on are Castro and maybe to a lesser extent Quadaffi. In
their cases I'm not sure who's lying and who's being truthful, but I want
to like them and haven't been adequately convinced not to. (For instance,
I had a friend in high school who was Cuban. Because he was a Jehovah's
Witness, he was forbidden not to pledge allegiance to the Cuban flag in
school. He told me that he & his family were taken to jail, and eventually
sent (or fled, I'm not sure which) on a raft to the U.S. Obvious case of
police corruption. But is Castro to blame? Is Bill Clinto to blame for
Louima's sodomization at the hands of New York City cops? Tough
questions.) And from history, Jefferson, although his flaws - slave
holder, rich land owner/speculator - are glaring.

I liked what you had to say Mark. Good points there. I admire Castro a lot
myself. I like a lot of what he says and stands for. I know that's not to
popular on the NG. That's okay, we're in titled to our own views.
I may not agree with everything he does, but I like a lot of what he has
done. I also think the point about the police being responsible for what
happened to your friend's family in Cuba is probably true. Castro can't and
doesn't make all decisions for the country, contrary to some views out
there. He couldn't, he wouldn't have the time. He can't have something to
do with every individual case. So I think you have a point there.
Know government is perfect, and know government will all of us agree
with all of the time. We're human, and because of that, we can't make one
another happy all of the time. The same goes with government. Things we
may think are things that the government can't do. Governments have to look
out for themselves to some degree. That's why I can't blame some people for
hating government all together.

Well I wonder how many coo attempts have been tried. I mean real coo
attempts.. I wonder how much of what we here is propaganda? My mother use
to tell me that when you don't know both sides to a story, you shouldn't
judge. So why not get things from the Iraqi side. There are some sights
out there.
I'm not saying that you'd agree with them necessarily, but we should all
be opened to checking out all sides to all conflicts.

Not to mention the fact that if he were so popular he wouldn't have to:

(1) surround himself with layers and layers of security personnel,
(2) pay such huge sums in cash and other gifts just to keep people loyal to
him
(3) ban free and fair elections.

To every man, USA and Israel wanted him to be a big dull he has to follow
what they want him to believe...

1- The guy who governs Iraq now who called "saddam husain", he was on very
strong
relation with the British intelligence since 1958.

2- on 1960, he was an official member in secret Masonry movement.

3- Secretly, several times he visited israel in the period from 1960 to 1962.

4- He reached to the power in Iraq in 1968 by a strong support from England
and USA.

5- At 1968, "MOSAD" (the israeli intelligence) has been established,
managed and supervise the Iraqi intelligence.

6- From 1968 so far, Iraq actually governed by israel and USA.

7- His aims is to destroy the Islam and muslims:

- Massacres against Iraqi people during more than 30 years.
- Massacres against Kurd people.
- Vast wide destruction against the Iraqi infra instruction.
- Started a sudden war against Muslims Irani people.
- Started a sudden invasion against Muslims Kuwaiti people.
- More than 1 million Iraqi and non Iraqi arrested in his jail.
- Supplying israel by free Iraqi oil during more than 30 years.
- Strong Supporting to the "serb" and there massacres against muslims in
Bosnia and herzgova and Kosovo.

Iraqi people now has only one aim, to arrest this guy who called "saddam"
and all his family individuals and there gang to trail them as a war
criminals they committed a very serious crimes against Iraqi people and the
humanity.

The main quistion is: How many dull in this world he still believe that guy
who governs Iraq now is a "Hero" or a "real leader"??

You remaind me how during 1939- 1941 in russia people were accused in espiange
aggainst Russia for Britan
and Germany at the same time. Even so WWII was
already on the way. and that would not have been possible.

It's sad, the U.S. media and bush administration did a good job
at making SuperSaddam look bad while he is really good, only fighting
for what is right.
