There seems to be a large number of empty (not missing) newgroups on MSN.
These groups are known to be quite active, yes often days at a time go by
with no new messages. Am I missing something here?

Examples: sci.military.naval, alt.military; both are active from what I can
see on Google, but I never or seldom down load any new messaged from MSN...

Microsoft has not be providing decent support for
newsgroups other than microsoft and msn for two years.
Every few months a few postings get through, just
enough to make it look like it's your fault, but you know
better now.

You will have to get your news from another source. If
your access is actually provided by UUNet try using
eagle.america.net instead of msnnews.msn.com
Keep in mind that is only a temporary solution, if
it works for you. Consider getting a hotmail account
so that you can switch providers without losing
email when the time to change comes.

There are many threads on this, you can search
Google Groups for eagle.america.net in this
newsgroup.

It's not meant to be used as a URL.
This will only work if UUNET is providing the access
for MSN.

In your Outlook Express:

tools --> Accounts --> Add --> News
to change later use --> [properties]

Your name
When you post a message to a newsgroup or send an e-mail message,
your disply name will appear in the From field. Type your name
as you would like it to appear.
Display name: John Smith

[next > ]

Internet News E-mail Address
People can rely to your news messages by sending you an
e-mail message at the address below--or they may post
another news message.
E-mail address: m...@myownisp.com

[next >]

Internet News Server Name
Type the name of the Internet news [NNTP] server your
Internet service provider has given you.

News [NNTP] Server: (fill in next line)
eagle.america.net

If your Internet service has informed you that you must log
on to your news [NNTP] server and has provided you with an
NNTP account name and password then select the check box
below.
[ ] My news server requires me to log on (leave empty)

[next >]

Congratulations.
You have successfully entered all of the information to set
up your account.

To save these settings, click Finish.
[Finish]

Now if you look back at your new account with properties
Tools --> Accounts --> (select account) --> [Properties]
---------------------------------------------------
General Tab (under Accounts property)
News Account
type the name by which you would like to refer to this
server. For example: "work" or "Microsoft News Server"

eagle.america.net (works for me)
User Information:
Name: John Smith
E-mail address:

[x] Include this account when checking for new messages

Server Tab (under Accounts property)
Server information
Server name: eagle.america.net
[ ] This server requires me to log on
---------------------------------------------

If this does not work for you there are other methods
as well that have been posted in this group.

I could not find the list of free servers, in the newsgroups
or at LockerGnome. I also think there is a category
in Yahoo. I did find the following web page though.
http://members.tripod.com/jbob2000/tripodwebsite/nglinks1.htm
it is March 2001 so since these free servers come and go you
may not have much luck with it.

I remember an article in a www.LockerGnome.com newsletter
but can't find the it on a search of their site.

Yes, a decent and reliable news server. netnews.msn.com is not in
that category.

Unfortunately, I don't have UUNET. Oh well, I guess I will just wait until
2008 to give MSN time to work out how to set up a newgroup server...

... And one funny thing is, I use alt.stories.incest as a test group,
because it always has TONS of spam, so I know it is active with 200+ spams
per day. MSN has never failed to keep THAT one going...
