Let's face it: Pan is just not ready for Windows.
1) It won't save settings from session to session.
2) It won't save screen settings from session to session.
3) There is no way to set a default Filter. This is a terrible thing.
4) It won't launch URLs using Internet Explorer (which I had to ADD to
the list of browsers. This is a TERRIBLE gaffe).
5) When it TRIES to launch URLs using Internet Explorer, it takes you to
a console, then dumps you out of the program.
6) If ANY error happens, it takes you to a console, then dumps you out
of the program. They need to work on error handling SOON, or many will
simply lose interest in the program. As it is, I was able to set up a
server, download the newsgroups, and download the headers. After that,
it is pretty much unusable.

Just to name a few IMPORTANT things about a newsreader. If it is not
easy to use, it is not viable IMO. I understand that it is a BETA. But
they could at least have added Notepad to the list of editors, as well
as adding Internet Explorer to the list of Web Browsers which launch
URLs. After all, they are attempting to port the program to Windows,
not another distro of Linux. Use Windows programs.

Since you know its in BETA I am sure you sent all these
suggestions/complaints to the developers so they can get them fixed for
the first stable release right?

Windows 98 is the most popular virus on the market today.

My thoughts too.
I don't have any problems here with Pan retaining my settings between
sessions, sure there is work to be done but it seems stable enough and is
usable....

Hi Donald,

I like your suggestion for having alternate browser/editor defaults
for Windows and have checked code into CVS to do that.

Not saving settings from session to session is something I haven't
seen. If you'll take the list of errors that Pan dumped to the console
http://pan.rebelbase.com/bugs/ and file a bug report on it, then
I'll be better armed to fix the problem.

Let's face it: Konqueror, Knode, SLRN, Lynx, and other LINUX browsers
are just NOT USED in the Windows Environment. Including them all in the
list of browsers, but not including Internet Explorer (used by over 90%
of all Windows users), is an affront to all Windows users, who will
never use them. Including all the Linux text editors in the list of
default editors, but not including Notepad or WordPad, is also an
affront to Windows users. Perhaps you should consider REMOVING the
entries for the Linux browsers and editors, and ADD entries for Internet
Explorer, Netscape, Opera, and Mozilla as the default entries for
browsers, with Notepad and Wordpad as the default entries for editors.

I'm sorry. Because Pan is not ready for normal use, I removed it. But
I like the IDEA of Pan for Windows. I will try it again when another
Beta is issued. I will also be better prepared to capture the screen.
I just happened to have failed to install a screen capture utility this
go-around, so was unable to capture the output of the Console window.
Capturing screens using "Alt-PrintScrn" only saves HUGE .bmp files. I
would hate to email large files to you, when it is much simpler to
install a screen-capture utility.

Well, as I said in my last letter, I agree with you on this and have
already checked code in that gives alternate app lists for Windows.
Since this is still a problem for you maybe I've misunderstood your
suggestion.

Other Windows users have reported this recently too. The console is
a side-effect of Pan's history as a Linux app, where capturing console
output is fairly common practice. For the next Windows beta I'll reroute
all the error messages to the Tools|Log Viewer, where you can save it as
a text file for mailing in.

Since you've uninstalled Pan, and since I haven't had anyone report that
their settings get lost from session to session, I'll have to table that
issue until someone is able to provide more information.
