I took some video with my digicam on the weekend - after having uninstalled
winamp from my computer last week.

But when I try and view the video files on my computer they show up as type
"winamp media files" and when I try to view them I can't, and I get the
"can't open because can't locate studio.exe" message again. Help! What is
happening? Have I got some sort of yuckie winamp bug in my system now??

Sounds like you have Winamp3 installed. I also had some errors with
"studio.exe" after installing the recently released Winamp3, but I
just reinstalled it and rebooted.

Now, if your digicam stuff still doesn't like Winamp (studio.exe),
then reassociate the extensions to another application such as Windows
Media Player ("WiMP"). How do you reassociate the extensions? There
are several ways, one is to hold the shift key down while
right-clicking a file, then selecting "Open with" from the menu, then
telling it which program to open it with, and selecting the box that
tells it to always open with that program.

Another way is to open whatever program you wish to use (such as WiMP)
and go into the settings/preference/configuration/options (or whatever
the program calls it) and telling it to reassoicate the extensions to
itself. Get it? If not, press F1.

missg...@NOSPAMhotmail.com says...
Probably just a file association mis-assignment. When you open the file
in Windows Explorer, instead of double-clicking on it, simply single
click to highlight the file. Now, hold down and shift key and do a
single right click. The drop down list which appears will include the
extra choice of "Open with..." because you were holding down the shift
key. Choose that, and the Open with window will appear, allowing you to
select which program you prefer to use. Checking the box in the lower
left will change the file association to that program for future uses.

Kenny,
I spoke too soon. I tried double-clicking on the mpeg file on the cd again,
having done the "open with" windows media player and checking the box, and I
got the studio.exe error message again. I cancelled out of the error
message and I am getting "access denied" error messages.

The "open with" function doesn't seem to want to accept the file
reassociation for winamp files.

By the way, in the meantime I have also re-installled winamp 3 and
uninstalled it again.
Any suggestions? Surely I should be able to play the files straight from
the CD with a simple double-click, without having to open windows media
player first and to do it through that??
Thanks,
Miss G

thanks, I've now done that, and they will open thru Windows Media Player.
But why won't they open with a double click direct from the CD? And why do
all my new mpeg files appear as "winamp media file" type??

I have installed and uninstalled Winamp 3.0 and yet this is still happening.

help!

Winamp asked you which files had to be associated with it, when you
installed winamp. At that moment, winamp told windows to play these
files through winamp. It seems Winamp3 doesn't remember which programs
were assigned to the files before, and didn't set them back after
uninstall.
You can solve this by assigning an other program to them. For example
to assign them to windows media player, open WMP, go to the options (in
the menu), choose the tab in the top-right, you should see a list of
file types with check boxes before them. Select the ones you want to
play through WMP and hit OK. Sorry, but I can't give you the exact
titles/names of the menu-items and tabs, because my WMP is Dutch and
not English.
