I have recently upgraded a machine from Windows NT to
2000. The system is running Excel 97. When I try to
update the links within the spreadsheet by going to EDIT >
LINKS and selecting a different source, Excel shows as Not
Responding and takes an extremly long time to complete.
This same file updates quick on an NT machine with Excel
97.

Does anyone know why Windows 2000 is causing this action
to process so slow?

Thanks,

Joe

No, but you might check if it works a lot quicker if you open the
source file first.
Do you have a different virus checker on the Windows 2000 system
perhaps?

Thanks for the inputs...

I found the answer. Windows NT and Windows 2000 use a
different version of ole32.dll. The fix was to upgrade
Windows 2000 to service pack 3. After doing this links
updated immediately.

Looked up ole32.dll in MS KB found

Q260943 Slow Performance Accessing Files May Slow Office Programs,
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q260943

A Windows 2000-based computer that is running Microsoft Office
programs that use hyperlinks to access resources on another computer
may operate more slowly than in previous versions of Windows.

This behavior [involving hyperlinks] occurs because Windows 2000 calls the
system GetLongPathNameW function instead of the function
built into Ole32.dll itself for Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
