I´m back (I hope), after months of Usenet exclusion I know have direct
contact with everyone again, Hoorrah.

I would like to thank Carl Henderson for keeping my Top100 lists
flowing to the list during this months.

Next post, comments.

WHAT DO THESE SALES FIGURES MEAN?
Approximately two months before a comic book is published,
comic book retailers and specialty stores in the direct
market place advance orders for comic books and other
related items. The "estimated number sold" listed above is
an estimate of the total number of copies pre-ordered
through Diamond Distribution, measured in thousands. This
includes sales up to mid-July, 2001 (the cut-off date
for pre-orders), and does not include advance reorders,
regular reorders, or other sales outside of Diamond
Distribution. On average, advance reorders (orders placed
after the cut-off date, but before the book actually ships)
usually add an additional two percent in sales in the two
weeks following the cut-off date. Regular reorders (orders
placed after the book ships) can vary widely depending
upon how well the book is received by retailers and fans.

Diamond Distribution is currently the largest and only
nation-wide (U.S. and Canada) distributor of direct-market
comic books. Diamond currently handles around 98-99%
of the comic book direct market, and the following
publishers are currently available exclusively through
Diamond: Archie, Awesome, Brainstorm, Dark Horse, DC Comics,
Gemstone, Image, Marvel, and Wizard Press. Other direct market
distributors include FM International, Hobbies Hawaii,
and Cold Cut Distribution -- all of which are very small
compared to Diamond, but may be a significant percent of
sales for smaller publishers.

The "comic book direct market" currently consists of
around 4100 specialty stores (primarily in the United
States and Canada) that order comic books and other
specialty items from Diamond Distribution and other
distributors on a non-returnable basis. This is different
from the newsstand or mass market, where comic books
are sold on a non-returnable basis. Only a few of the
largest publishers sell their books on newsstands,
including Marvel, DC, Image, Dark Horse, and Archie.
Sales levels for newsstand comics are not widely known,
but it is generally estimated that the newsstand accounts
for roughly 25% of all comic books sold in the United
States. For some publishers (such as Archie and Gladstone),
newsstand sales represent a majority of their sales, but
this is the exception rather than the rule.

Note that the "estimated sales" listed above are for sales
to comic book stores, and do not reflect actual sales of
comic books in stores to customers. Currently, there is
no accurate measure for actual sales, but it is estimated
that roughly 80% of the comics ordered by stores are sold
to customers within four weeks (80% sell-through). Sell-
through varies widely from title to title. The "estimated
sales" also do not include sales outside of comic book
stores (such as mail order, subscriptions, special orders,
convention sales, or comic books sold directly to stores
by the publisher).

Estimated sales are included for comics-related magazines and
graphic novels in addition to comic books. Sales figures are not
included for non-printed items (such as action figures, posters,
and t-shirts) or for non-comics-related books (such as science-
fiction paperbacks) and non-comics-related magazines.

Note: This information is made available by Diamond
Distribution, and is published monthly in DIAMOND
DIALOGUE (available to comic store owners). I do
not make any claims as to the absolute accuracy of
the information above, and none of these sales
figures should be considered absolute fact.

For reference, 1 order index point from the Diamond
Dialogue = 452 comics sold.

Superguys sell better than supergals.

Nice gain, right there. I was worried for a few months.

> 57 Harley Quinn: OW at War #1 DC 33.1

Crossover sells better than the series. Apparently too much Harley is a bad
thing. I wouldn't have thought... Though if Joe Kelly had been given the
assignment I bet we'd like it more. (Joe Kelly and Matt Idleson, together
again...)

Some big gains:

This is still doing really good for a Vertigo comic.

I think the bi-weekly on the Deadman series hurt the overall sales. I know
I passed as I could not afford to fit FIVE new books into my alloted comics
budget. Had the series been a monthly release, I likely would have bitten.

Generations, which I ordered, is suffering I think from a general Byrne
backlash based on a few recent lackluster efforts.

Havn't tried it, or heard anything about it. How about a review, or a
pointer if you have done one already.

Could be. Judging by some confusion expressed on various lists when the
solicitation came out, there may have been a mistaken belief among retailers
that this was a collection of the recent Ultron story in the regular series.
It wasn't, it's original material.

I don;t think so. My impression, based on usenet discussion, is that the
geral upward movement of most Marvel titles can be attributed to Marvels

Could be. But x-overs usually have double diget impacts on lower selling
titles. Keep in mind, if all the x-over titles jump by 1000, that is a much
larger % for a title selling only 16k as opposed to 46k.

I can't agree. I dropped it around issue #12. Try as I might, I just
cannot get into these characters.

I don't think this is a statement re: Harley. There were a couple of other
regular books that were outsold by their OWaW x-over last month as well.

If it had been monthly, though, I suspect the final issue would have wound
up even lower.

Agreed. I almost overlooked this one, because it's not the
type of thing I normally read (I'm not into horror, which
this seemed like it might be), but I decided to give it a
try, and I really like it.

Hey! I resemble that remark! Err...seriously, I used to read Superboy,
but I got bored with it. I may give up on Impulse for the same reason.
But I do find myself reading more Marvel than I ever did before (and
more non-DC in general, actually...I used to read almost all DC 4-5
years ago).

As someone else mentioned, it's probably the fact that it's an
OWAW tie-in issue. Which, in my mind, means that it's probably
a good time for me to drop the book.

Don't know. I wonder if quality has anything to do with it? None of these
titles have been as enjoyable as they were in previous years.

this book has been in danger of cancelation.

Blimey. I bought exactly 6 of the top 100, and they were mostly at the
wrong end (45, 87, 88, 94, 99, 100). Is it me or has the popular taste
in comics over the last 5 years just got worse and worse?

The top 10 (assuming they'd all come out at the right time) should
have been:

1 Love & Rockets
2 Eightball
3 Black Hole
4 Acme Novelty Library
5 Palookaville
6 Evil Eye
7 Naughty Bits
8 Optic Nerve
9 Hellboy
10 That Janes Sturm book about the golem.

What made you choose these? Again, I bought 1 (111).

Well I counted 37 of the top hundred that I will/have/would buy, and this
after a recent purge that saw me drop all the comics I was just buying "in
case they get good again". I also by five of the seven titles that were
listed from outside the top hundred.

I can't answer your question, but I think I'm buying more comics now than I
ever have. Mainly because there are now a significant number of Marvel
titles I read, which has never been the case before.

From your point of view, however, I probably do have bad taste, given that
I don't read any of the books in your top ten on a regular basis.

No, your tastes have become more refined.

Look at BillBoards Top 100 for pop music. How many of your current favorites,
if any, are in the top ten?

I tend to agree, but they come out as they are finished, which is infrequent,
and I have often mistaken the second printing as a new issue (damn hard telling
those Acmes apart, sorry). This infrequency of quality books is one of the main
reasons I started a pull list, so I would be assured of getting the new issues
when they DID arrive.

It's a risibly expensive one-shot which is meant to be advancing
the Ultron storyline for the Avengers' core book. Those orders are
diabolical given that it's effectively an extra issue of Avengers.
Something has gone wrong here, probably in Marvel's choice of format.

I had to read the solicitation three times before I realized this
wasn't a reprint. I think Marvel's catalog writer needs to take the
credit for killing this one.

Of course, I also missed _Thunderbolts: Life Sentences_ because I
thought it was a reprint book. But at least I didn't read the
solicitation for that one.

Swamp Thing sold about 12,000 (for awhile, but was canceled with #20). Fiona
Avery's first (of 4 issues) "No Honor" outsold "Monarchy" 1. 50,000 or so.
She was also Stracynski's assistant.
But I bought Cyclops for Vaughan, too. I don't think a lot of people did.
Swamp Thing was fun.

I believe that SWAMP THING writer Brian K. Vaughn is also doing the CYCLOPS
mini-series from Marvel. The first issue of that came out this week.

Maybe so, but none of this is mainstream... so you can't really expect it
to appear as the top ten sales chart...
