I always wonder how exactly this works. I know that it should be
automagical for it.* (at least, I arranged things with tale some years ago)
but I am told that it takes a while before new groups are added.
My naive thought was something on the lines of
"if message arrives for it-*@moderators.isc.org, bounce it to
same...@moderators.news.nic.it", but this does not appear to be the case.
Does anybody know a bit more?

Might want to mail moderator...@isc.org and ask. He distributes
something like an aliases file to the participant hosts, I believe, so I'm
not sure if it can do mappings like that.

My understanding was that when the control message for a new moderated group
arrives, a script generates the new mail alias.
Maybe the delay was caused by the fact that sites partecipating at
moderators.isc.org are not being updated overnight... I'll ask them.

I asked tale to implement this for no.*, but he said it wasn't
possible.
It is best to tell moderator...@isc.org in advance, so that the
remailers are ready when the groups is created. Updating the master
file takes 2-10 days, so much confusion will result if the groups is
created before isc.org is à jour.

If anyone knows any information about any hierarchies which I missed out, could
they please forward them to me. On the list I've currently got 115 hierarchies,
out of a total of about 700 hierarchies which have more then one group.
I'm fairly sure I've got most hierarchies for countries, but I'm probably
missing quite a few state & city groups.

style), and adding a field for PGP fingerprint, does anyone have any input on
any of those two, or have any ideas on other fields that people would find
useful ?

You don't have chi.*, the regional hierarchy for Chicago. I assume the
Newsgroup header is where discussions of newgrouping takes place? And
Email is for more information? Or the hierarchy administrator? Or the
address that must appear in the From of an official control message?
Or to arrange a feed.
I assume it's the one for more information.

Yeah, basically they're leaking control messages occasionally but for the
most part the only way to get reliable messages is to connect to their
servers directly. I think people are mostly getting articles into Usenet
proper via suck feeds.

Canada is another bilingual country, like Wales. I believe the can.*

IIRC. A discussion here a while back about the linux.* hierarchy, several people
commented that RedHat had stopped gating their mailing lists to the linux.*
hierarchy, and instead were now gating them to the redhat.* hierarchy.
I've mailed the given email address to get a definite answer.

Any suggestion on how I should mark them ?
I was think of calssifying them as "Internal", but seeing the messages are
incoming and outgoing of the Microsoft newsserver it's not completely accurate.
Another problem is that there appear to be a number of hierarchies that have
leaked out like this previously, but some of them are no longer leaking(AFAIK)
such as the sff.* hierarchy, so a list of newsgroups is held by some ISPs but
they don't actually have a feed.

AFAIK, certainly some of the redhat groups *are* gated mailing lists...
I've just gone and grabbed an article from redhat.announce, and at
the bottom it has:

Methinks that's clearly a gated mailing list.
After further checking...
Of all the active redhat.* groups on news.demon.co.uk, that one is the only
one that appears to be a gated mailing list. So, it does look like it
actually is a general newsgroup hierarchy.

There's a whole class of hierarchies like microsoft.* that aren't
intentionally distributed but are sucked down and injected into Usenet by
a whole bunch of people. I believe borland.* is in the same category,
along with 3dfx.* and a few others. Not sure a good tag for the class,
but they're all the same sort of thing.

The sff.* folks yelled at the people who were sucking feeds down from
them.

Yeah, it was dead for a long time, but it seems to be up and running
again. That one's gated; none of the rest are. Sorry about the
inaccuracy there.

How about `regurgitated hierarchies', i.e. they were originally
intended to be internal, but aren't any more.
