After several posts regarding AVIs with wFormatTag of 0x0401 and getting
very little response, I find after going through Usenet archives that
this is known to Intel as being available in a beta version but is no
longer available. In your defense, this info comes from another
newsgroup (intel.create_share_camera_pack) but even so it is still from
Intel Technical Support. This info comes from you (see reprint of
message below):

Hello Len,

The codec that you mention was part of a beta program and is no longer
available. Your friends that are using it need to update the app that
they are using to create the videos. It is not included in CODINSTL.EXE.

First of all, having some unknown person change their app and recreate
their AVI is kind of ridiculous. The problem is that I have AVIs that
do not play audio. Secondly, it seems to me that by not making even a
'use as-is' available for techies (assuming that the install/backout
instructions would be a bit complicated), you are making it easy for
hackers to distribute viruses with 'their version' of this beta codec.
As it stands there is a page that distributes this codec that appears to
be reliable, but you never know - it is just somebodies website at AOL.
I would appreciate if you could make this beta available to me on an
"as-is use at your own risk" basis. Thanks.

If the files you are having problems with were compressed using a beta audio
compressor (IMC) there is nothing that can be done to view them. All beta
participants were warned against distributing content they developed during
their involvement in the program to avoid this exact scenario.

The technology behind the IMC is now the basis of codecs that are currently
shipping with the Intel Create & Share(TM) camera pack and Indeo(R) audio.
Legacy beta versions of this software is not publically available.

Do i have that right or am i oversimplifing?? just want to know if I should give up or if there is something i can download to get the audio out of these AVI files.
