I've lurked here for a while, and I wondered if you would like to post some
opinions about restaurants.

There are some good pubs (for food) around Peterborough, and one or two
exceptional restaurants, some in hotels. I'd like to share some opinions. I
like to go out for food from time to time, and I've found a few that I like
and some that I think may be over-rated. Where would you recommend?

To start it all off - my wife and I went to Fratelli's in Castor last week.
Here are my comments:

1. it was busy - this is a good sign, lots of people interested.
2. the decor was good - not pretentious, pastel colours, "relaxed" oak
beams - (you'll know what I mean if you see them).
3. Portion size good. On the large size from my point of view - I prefer
small and special.
4. Wine list - good - a reasonable choice, and good price range. Italian
wines mainly (to be honest I prefer Californian, South African, French, but
it is an Italian restaurant, so I can't complain!). We had a nice Sicilian
white to go with the seafood risotto.
5. Service - excellent. Maybe too quick!!!
6. Desserts - maybe a bit limited. Nice Icecream, but not too much choice
elsewhere.
7. Coffee - excellent, as you might expect from an Italian restaurant.

We had previously visited Fratelli in Stamford. I liked it a lot - my wife
was less enthusiastic, but I think that may have been because of
"expectations" which were not fulfilled.

Overall - I'd say that they are worth a try. If you haven't been, it will be
an interesting experience.

p.s. I have no connections with the Restaurant trade or the "Fratelli
family" at all. I'm a school teacher, and my wife works in an IT company.
I'll be posting other Restaurant experiences later. However - it's your
newsgroup - PLEASE post your experiences. This is something we can all
benefit from - what ARE the good restaurants out there?

C'mon guys - we need your posts!!!

Take care,

John.

EAST (charters boat) is a great restaurant.
I highly recommend the 'volcano chicken'.
Though you don't want 4 or 5 orders of it at the same table or you'll melt
with the heat from the flames.

Good selection of food, starters, main & deserts.
All reasonably priced.

Not a wine person myself, the ale is ok & downstairs is Charters, an
excellent pub.

Enjoy.

True, but we could perhaps do a bit better than just three venues, and one
chip butty?

Neil, is that the best you can do? Food is not just 'refuelling'. There are
important matters to consider - health, beauty, aesthetics. Surely you have
noticed that you get a better chip butty in some places than in others? What
we want to know is where do I go to get the best chip butty in Peterborough?

Preferably somewhere we can all go, rather than your kitchen. Not that there
is anything wrong with your kitchen, of course - but I assume you don't want
us all to turn up.

Hmmm. Mental note to self... try Great Northern, in spite of Posh links...
;-)

okay, here goes on ones that I have tried and gone back to:
The Windmill in Orton Waterville, good grub, reasonable surroundings,
reasonable prices.
The Cuckoo at Alwalton, yes it's a 'chain' pub but the food is good.
Same goes for The Fitzwilliam Arms in Marholm (same chain).
The Paper Mill at Wansford - rather nice grub, nice surroundings,
reasonable prices.
Fiddlesticks restaurant also at Wansford, excellent grub , bit more
pricey
Yes, agree with everything said about Ristorante Fratelli in Castor.
The Phoenix at Fotheringay, excellent food, quite pricey.
The Mill at Oundle, great food but they don't do their soup in a bun any
more ...waaagh!
And if you're prepared to go a bit further afield, there's the pub at
Hambleton near Oakham, can't remember its name but it's the first one
you come to as you drive in - good food etc at reasonable prices. (try
Hambleton Hall if you're on an expense account)
And then there's The George at Stamford - their fish and chips is to
die for!

Thanks Chris.

I agree re Paper Mill at Wansford - I go there when I feel like sea food -
in my opinion better than the Elton Sea Food Restaurant, which is
overpriced, and has an unimaginative menu. It's a long time since I went to
the Mill at Oundle. It was pleasant, but not particularly memorable -
however, that was a long time ago, and it may have improved. Hambleton Hall
is an ambition for the future, when the savings have matured.
I have visited the George at Stamford - it is good, but pricey. The Old
Bridge Hotel in Huntingdon was excellent, the last time I went (a year or
two ago) and I gather they have (supposedly) the best wine list in the UK.
The Bell Inn in Stilton was also rather pleasant (again about a year ago) -
particularly the environment and the Stilton cheese 'dessert' with fruit
cake.

Take care,

John.

To turn this around and ask for some recommendations instead of making
some..

Is there anywhere around here I can get a decent steak? Preferably within
Peterborough (I'm looking for somewhere convenient to head to after a trip
to the Key Theatre next weekend). Alternatively a decent fish restaurant in
or near town? The Paper Mill is on the list for another time but it's a big
trek from the Key!

As an aside: I had Sunday lunch at the Stilton Cheese (in Stilton,
of-course) this weekend and it was very good; I'd never thought of going
there before.

I've had two very good meals there. We only found it my accident, as we'd
been for a meal before at The Bell* and we were going back for a bar
snack. Well, it was dark and we turned into the car park, went into the
pub and sat and ordered and had our meal and it was only when we were
browsing the win list (we didn't order a bottle with the meal, but took a
look for next time), we noticed that the place was called The Stilton
Cheese!

Anyway - excellent food - we went back a couple of months later with a
party of eight. Their seafood is particularly good.

*The Bell - also excellent. They (used to) do a fixed price menu in the
evening which although not cheap, was damn good.

Heard that The Fox at Folksworth is good, but not yet tried it out.

Their bar food is pretty good, and I was surprised that it wasn't all that
expensive (from what I can remember).

Nearly mentioned it in my last post. Yes, very good; often quite hard to get
a table at busy times but always been happy with the food. Not been there
for quite a while, though. The chef only recently moved there from somewhere
else with a very good reputation, although I can't remember where now.

Can you tell me more?

I'm assuming this was a recommendation for a steak restaurant rather than
fish? I tend to assume the Bull is quite pricy (certainly their bar used to
be)?

Yes it is pricy but good quality and almost any type of meal you like.

I have, and I like it.

Food is a typical Italian pizza/pasta style, similar to Pizza Express and
the like. Staff nice and friendly, and nice environment as well.
