Great photos! I was wondering where Dan was these last few weeks. I
knew you were headed to Baja.

Looks like you guys had some good surf and good fun.

There I was, relaxed and having a good time, relishing the fact that those
guys would never find me ;)
Seriously it was great to see them. They camped farther up the point and I
really should have spent more time with them than I did.

After the torched wetsuit tragedy I used a borrowed wetsuit that was the
old style, stiff and thick. I burned a shoulder out after three days of
paddling with that suit of armor! Can't complain though!
Shoulder is better and I've been surfing the local breaks.

Dr Hendricks looks like one of those wirey tough guys. I'm not surprised

Uh huh....kinda figured that. Once you get into something tall like that one
you kinda trade off stiffness or else the thing is hernia material. You need
something, what, 70" or so high??

I am given to understand that the really good ones are awfully pricy....and
wooden. An alternative might be one of the stands they make for lasers (
used in alignment systems) very stiff and they can be had quite tall.

First, let me add my thanks and appreciation for the pics.
I know what you mean about wanting to post them all. Culling
is difficult when you've 'scored'. Of course, in my case, if
I get 2 'keepers' on a roll, I'm happy.
Re: tripods....... I use a Bogen 3236, with the 3047 head.
It extends to 78", with the legs 44" apart, and the center
column down all the way. Total height, with legs together,
is 7'6". Comes in handy for shooting spots where you need
some extra height to see over the inside waves.
The head is 3-way pan/tilt, with a large, hexagonal,
quick-release plate. The sucker weighs in at about 12 lbs.
I've had mine a while, seems I recall paying $170, or so.
I know the simple act of scanning and assembling is lots
of work, and can get tedious. May I suggest, however, some
kind of text labels right on the image, as a way to describe,
or ID, the shot/subject?

I asked my wife to shoot a pic of me and the camera gear with the point in
the background to show how the point is set up. When conditions are good the
right is a long ride. the left is short and sweet with a heavy penalty
factor. Last year my daughter and I timed the rights. An average ride with
no "milking" the wave was 45 seconds. Exceptional waves were much longer. It
is a fun wave that can get nasty on occasion. The paddle out can be brutal.
I have been going there for 20 years, there have been a lot changes (mostly
with crowds).

Good waves with good surfers combined with good lighting really boosts the
"keeper"
percentage. My Sumatra trip was a prime example of that formula. It was the
highest success ratio I have ever had.

When the waves got big I shot from on top of a friends cab-over camper! it
wsas the only way to get over the inside waves!

My old tripod is a Bogen 3001 with a 329 head. The tripod is to short
and not that stiff. I really like the head.
My current tripod is a Tiltall model TE 01 professional. The head is okay
but not like the Bogen. The tripod has bigger legs and is much stiffer than
the Bogen 3001.
Right now I have a problem switching heads. The existing Tiltal head
doesn't want to come off and appears to pressed on the center post. I will
work something out on this problem.
Question: If your Bogen is 78" tall with the post down you must be a giant
or standing
on a box to use it, right? Man thats a big'n.

Yea I hear ya. It took me about 8 hours to select, scan and edit (slightly
sharpen only). If I
post fewer shots I will do as you suggest or just add some text next to the
image on the web page. I do this on some of my web pages , November Sessions
is an example.
Many thanks to you, Doc, Mark and others for helping me with your input. I
have learned alot.

That would be Glen Horn, the unofficial "mayor" of the point. Glen is a
great shaper, surfer and one of the finest people I have ever met.

If you look close you can almost see me mumbling "Damn, they found me" ;)
The good doctor dropped in on some very healthy waves. I was very
impressed.
Terry has made quite an impression with my surf buds, many of whom are
hard to get to know and are tough judges of character (I'm probably one of
their few "mistakes").

I called it "buzzing the boat". The Gray whale would come right at us like
Moby Dick then turn on its side with the fin up (like the photo) and glide
right by a few yards away. It was way cool.

The 3236 is really sturdy. Three-section, tube-type legs, and leg braces
for further stiffening. All of which is necessary to support my 1000mm lens,
which also weighs in at around 12-13 lbs.

> Question: If your Bogen is 78" tall with the post down you must be a giant

The legs are in three sections, and I usually extend just two,
which puts the top plate about 5' (+or-) off the ground. The
advantage in the three section legs is further stiffening,
and the center column can stay low, to keep it even more stable.
The legs are 1-1/2" diameter at the top section, and the center
column is 1", geared, with a lock. Another advantage with the
3236 is the 3 section legs allow easy setup on uneven terrain.
