Unbelievable.

The first episode of Alias has only just started on Channel 4 and it's
already a mess as a result of Channel 4's happy little scissors.

The entirety of the premiere's opening torture sequence has been
dropped, so the show starts off looking like just another teen drama.

It was ridiculous for Channel 4 to attempt to shoehorn this show into a
tea-time slot, and I'd actually prefer that no terrestrial station
bought the series rather than see it degraded and sullied in this
fashion.

This isn't Alias, and this isn't fair.

I suppose if you've seen it before it doesn't matter, but it must be
confusing for the people watching who haven't seen it on Sky.

Like when its suggested that Sydney see a dentist but they never saw her
have her teeth extracted without anaesthetic. Also the way she can cause
a guy to fly through a car window without hardly touching him.

This is Angel all over again, but then we knew it would be.

If you've seen the show before, what do you reckon will be cut out of
the second episode?

I'm trying to decide whether it's even worth my while to watch this
show until pressure from fans gives it a late night repeat slot.

I didn't watch it on Sky as I was waiting for an uncut WS version on
terrestrial.

And that's why I didn't bother watching, despite the fact I've already
missed it on Sky.

If we make enough noise it's possible they may see sense and show it in a
later slot, but I very much doubt it - we can't even complain to 'Right to
Reply' now.

I guess this is just the latest in a long line of shows I'm gonna have to
miss for the time being because the idiots in charge of scheduling don't
have two brain cells to rub together...

you should have waited before posting - if you thought the interrigation
scene was cut bad - wait to see how little of the "dead boyfriend" scene
they showed - I blicked and almost missed it.

I almost didn't watch it on sky - I was thinking of waiting and watching it
WS when terrestrial picked it up, glad I decided not to bother.

Best you can hope for is a late night/early morning repeat of the whole
series sometime in the future - like Angel Season 1. Its funny - C4
actually seemed to listen to complaints over Angel and are showing Series 2
in a later slot - then they go and make the same mistake with Alias.

Is it so hard for them to do it? They show enough shit in the early hours that
they could put aside for an uncut WS Alias. Do I have to wait for the eventual
DVD boxset? (nothing yet before anyone asks)

Sky must've been less cut (if not uncut) at 9pm, but wasn't WS. C4 was WS (I
presume from the trailer, I didn't bother watching) but badly cut.

I've seen enough cuts lately with Sky One's 5.30pm screenings of Family Guy all
of which are available uncut through Kazaa. The amount of risque jokes being
sliced out is incredible (esp. Stewie's answer to the police about being stuck
to Brian: "He lured me with the promise of chocolates and puppies", or
something similar - something you wouldn't see on UK TV at the moment after the
meeja's H&J Show)

It's like buying fish and chips from Sky or Channel 4, but they keep forgetting
one or the other.

And I noticed Channel 5 are showing Dark Angel from next Saturday as
well at 7.15pm.

Whilst it probably isn't quite as violent as Alias, Five did have a few
issues with various episodes of Xena which they showed an hour later
(when they showed it in a prime time slot) and Dark Angel is probably as
comparable to Xena in terms of violence and fighting.

OTOH, I remember they showed a shot of Callisto being swallowed by
quicksand that wasn't on Sky One.

It probably will be trimmed as well. Curses.

Thanks to Poochy on the Channel 4 forum, here are the cuts in full...

"
In total, there were approximately 5m 35s of cuts! Of these, the
longest was about 1m 49x, and the shortest was just 3s. In total, some
14 separate edits were made to this one episode!

The cuts were, as follows:

Spoiler:
1- After opening credits scene, we go straight into the opening shot
of Sydney being tortured. Whole sequence was removed by C4. (1m 01s)

2- About 20m into the episode, after Syd tells Danny in the shower who
she works for, a long-shot of rear-only nudity (male and female) is
removed, along with the ensuing argument, and details showing that
Danny hits Syd around the face, who then proceeds to cry. Plus, more
torture scene removal. (1m 49s)

3- The discovery of Danny's body in the bath has been cut, to remove
bloody shots, and to edit all sight of Sydney screaming horrendously.
(21s)

4- More torture scene removal, including scenes of side-effects of the
drugs Syd has been given to quell her pain. Also removal of her fake
confessional to the torturer. (1m 47s)

5- In the car-park, Sydney is attacked by a gunman. Excessive shots of
gunfire against Sydney and various cars have been removed. (9s)

6- When Sydney attacks the gunman, she doesn't just knock him out. A
long scene of fighting has been removed, including repeated blows to
the head, face, upper body, legs, and headbutts. (37s)

7- More torture scene removal. (50s)

8- The break-in has been edited. When Sydney is knocked unconcious,
after picking the lock and breaking her lock-picks, more footage has
been removed to edit out all scenes of her being knocked out by a
Taiwanese soldier, and her capture/torture. (13s)

9- During the torture scene, Sydney headbutts him, and then crushes
him under the chair. She crushes his body brutally, in the uncut
scene. (6s)

10- Sydeny then handcuffs him to the chair, but proceeds to torture
him, and has a fight with the guards. More edits for fighting. (Head
blows, karate chops, etc, etc.) (33s)

11- Sydney escapes with the gadget from the laboratory. Excessive
gunfire and the resulting gas-main explosion was edited out. (13s)

Someone asked why I was complaining about the cuts as I'd already seen
the show on Sky. Believe me, it's well worth watching again, and I
wanted to see it in widescreen for the first time, but NOT when its
been eviscerated by Channel 4.

Selfishly, if I want to see Alias get media coverage and DVD releases
then it's got to get a good following on terrestrial television, and
it's not likely to when its presented as a hacked-up mess like this.

Has everyone complained to C4 then? I did before it was aired, after seeing the
timeslot it would get. It can be done online or there's an address at:

Yep, I've complained. What sort of ratings does 'Angel' get on a
Saturday night? I would have thought that well-made fantasy shows of
this sort would get a reasonable audience of geeks^w discerning
viewers.

As someone who's never seen this series before - being a
terrestrial-only viewer - I've now been put off by the information
regarding cuts to the original. Have Ch.4 confessed to this anywhere?
e.g. "Viewers should note that this programme has been edited for sex
and violence".

Has it been shown unedited in the States? It sounds a bit extreme to be
shown uncut on American TV.

I recorded it yesterday, but I don't think I'll watch it now. I hate
being protected by TV nannies. If I don't like something, I turn it
off. I don't wish to be patronised by the media.

They schedule their programmes properly, or at least more so than C4.

It was cut for violent themes rather than any real graphic scenes - most of
the violence being implied. There is nothing that couldn't be showed in an
8.pm. slot.

Is it not possible to start an on-line petition to get Channel 4 to show a
late-night uncut version? I signed one a while ago to get Sky 1 to show
season 6 of Buffy uncut, and in the end they did show an uncut version of
the season premiere...(better than nothing!!!)

Just a thought...

I watched it and it was mildly enjoyable. I don't know if the restored
scenes would have made it much better; I mean we've been here before have we
not with Nikita, the film and television series.

Interesting.

I'm pretty sure that most of these surfaced on the RTE showing,
but for some reason (possibly the fact that they were trying to squish it
into an hour long slot) they seemed to cut out some stuff like Sydney dying
her hair bright red.
