Anyone have experience installing the front windshield in a s30?

I am tempted to do this.

I have done gasket/trim windshield gaskets in the past, but it has been quite a while. Takes practice, but it is not terrible. Reading the posts on the forums are mixed about the difficulty. Then again, so are people's skillsets...   :-)

Once I am ready for glass, I am going to have Safelite come to the house and do it (approx $300 for new glass installed). I will have new paint on the car and HOPE that they can do it better than I can. It is probably worth the extra $100 or so to me to avoid the fear and frustration, but that is just me and my paranoia.

I need to replace mine and have been holding off because the car is older than the installers  and I figure most of them have probably never done one with a gasket.

Please let us know how it goes, and if you use a service, who it was.

I have done several, not on z cars but the same principle.  Use twine and wrap the groove in the rubber.  Use soap to lube the groove so when you pull the twine out to engage the rubber lip around the body flange it slides easily.  Set bottom of windshield in first and work the twine from the middle out wards around to the top.  Keep firm pressure down on the windshield to set the bottom groove, and work up the sides and finally work the rubber around the top side lip.  The only caveat, I haven't installed the chrome trim.  That will suck..  The rubber install is easy once you get the knack.

Good luck.

I do have an appointment on friday to have it done, although I am still mulling it over.

First of all nobody pays retail for glass. I got a quote from the z club contact for $159 installed with my own gasket(precision, same one they would use). I'm not sure what they charge for a new gasket. I think i payed $50-60 for mine. When the warehouse called me to schedule an appointment she quoted me $350 installed with gasket. Big difference between retail and what insurance companies pay. Obviously she didn't know I had already gotten a quote.

I do have some rope and a suction cup to maneuver the glass around. If I don't do the windshield, I will probably do the back glass at some point.

Darrel,

I’m up for doing the install with you I have two windshields we can use, if we break one we can mark that up to the learning curve. I’ve wanted to do it too. I think that putting in the metal trim will only be a drag until were done, but I can’t imagine it will be too hard.

Let me know if you want to do it,

Rob

Ok Rob,

I have read up on it, so let's do it. It will definitely be educational.

When did you want to do it?

Ok, the first one was practice.

Was just thinking about pulling it out to start over then *crack*. It gave me time last night to look for more vids about putting in the glass with rubber gasket. Found a vw vid on youtube that explained it a lot better. The first glass, I set the bottom lip over the pinch weld. Doing it that way it didn't let the window go far enough onto the weld and settle. Leaving too much at the top to settle in.

This is the vid I found on youtube.

They explained it a lot better than other vids. It show you place the windshield and gasket in the opening, keeping the gasket on top of the pinch weld and center it. Other youtube vids I found didn't explain it in such detail. It made the second time install so much easier. I think we had it installed in 30 mins, 45 tops.

I want to thank Rob for his help and the windshields. I just wish we could have done a better job with the first one. It was a really good windshield.

If you don't have insurance for glass replacement and have a used windshield to put in, I think I could probably help. No guaranty but if you're willing I don't have a problem with it.

Then again, if you have approx $200, you can get safelite/elite to come out. $159 if you have your own gasket.

Thanks again Rob.

I invited Michelle over to check out our windshield installation. She had a little trouble with her car lately what she thought was vapor lock. She made it here. After we got the windshield in we all went to have lunch. Michelle got less than a block away when her car died. Checking the thing over, it had spark, at least at then coil wire. Rob decided to pull the dizzy cap. The center button was gone, just shavings and what looked like what was left of the button. We pushed it back to my driveway and went to lunch. Michelle called Evie and had her bring the spare distributor to where we had lunch.

From there, Rob went home and we went back to my place and installed the cap and rotor off the extra dizzy. The shaft was ok on the dizzy in the car. Not sure how the damage could have occurred on the old cap. Maybe Michelle could post a pic of the inside of the cap.

Once we got the cap on we tried to start it. It ran, but soon quit and couldn't get it started again. I took starting fluid and sprayed it into the air cleaner and it ran off the starter fluid. Fuel problem now. Michelle proceeded to pull the electric pump. We could hear it running before taking it off, tried to see if fuel would come out at the fuel filter. After taking the pump out we hooked it up to the battery, no suction, bad fuel pump. Replaced under warrantee from oreillies. Got it back. while Michelle was hooking it back up, a hose dropped down and splashed a bit of fuel which got in her eye. We rushed in and started flushing her eye. Took it awhile to take some of the sting away. It probably still smarts a bit but she could still see so no damage done.

Kept flushing her eye and taking a break. After the break I hooked the fuel pump back up while she was getting the fuel hoses sorted out in the engine bay.

Now armed with a new fuel pump and "new" cap and rotor it started right up. She also wrapped her fuel rail with some heat shield/blanket. Not sure if that was a problem in the sporadic problems she was having, but now it couldn't hurt.

What are the odds the dizzy cap and fuel pump would go bad at the same time? Hopefully the fuel pump will last longer than 6 months.

Darrel,

Nice story. Yes that would be confusing having a fuel issue on top of an ignition issue. I am glad you got it sorted out.

I got fuel in my ear a few years ago. It wasn't a nice feeling. LOL. Stung pretty badly. Arlene called the medical help line because she saw me in such misery. The nurse said she had never encountered this issue and didn't know what to do. Meanwhile, I jumped in the shower, as hot as I could stand and by the time Arlene was done with the nurse I had vaporized most of the gas out of my sinuses. It was painful. I feel for you Michelle. Someday you will be able to look back at this and laugh.

Take care

Hi all,

The "240Z Fund" is dried up for the time being, so I am digging into the ugly part of the remaining body work - quarters and wheelwells. The rest is good to go...

I am in need of the left/driver's side dogleg sheetmetal from the door latch/striker area down to the rocker (See Attached Photo).  I am in the middle of doing my wheelhouse repair and will be needing this before I can weld in the rear quarter repair panel.

If anybody has a donor car that they are gradually tearing apart, I could use this piece and am also looking for another rear exhaust cutout for the right side...

I may need to scour the local junk yards for this one, but figured that I would ask.

Thank you!

Tim
