Hi Everyone,

I first found out about the $45 zine stall fee at TINA this year three days ago when Staples emailed me from Brisbane with the bad news.  I spent all day Monday and Tuesday writing angry angry emails to TINA but could not get them to do anything about the situation.  On Tuesday night I wrote a final email to them that was so vile, so full of bile I no longer recognised myself in the email.  I deleted that email and decided to try to do something about the terrible situation.

My idea was to contact some people I know through my work in zines and my work at Sticky, get a group together and purchase all the zine stalls, as a group, at the TINA zine fair this year and then offer the stalls for free to zine-makers.  I wrote 18 emails and had the money covered in 12 hours thanks to some arts organisations, some zine makers, some zine distros and some individuals who like and read zines.  I am still working through the details with TINA but hopefully there will be an announcement made in the next couple of days that zine stalls will be free at TINA this year.  Thej group of people is aiming to cover the cost of the tables and the cost of the insurance that the festival wants stall holders to have.  That would make the zine stalls completely free to stall-holders.

I realise this is not a perfect solution.  Terrible mistakes have been made at TINA.  The zine fair at TINA was once the biggest and best zine fair in the country, that is no longer the case.  We have had our own battles with funding the space at Sticky over the eleven years we have operated - especially over the past eighteen months when we have seen our funding go from a healthy situation to now being non-existant.  If someone had said to me twelve months ago (when it looked like Sticky would serioulsy have to close down) that they thought there was something good deep down in what we do and they were going to actively do something to help I would have hugged them and thanked them.  I would have given my right arm for someone to help out Sticky in the first few years we operated because god knows we needed help.  But this is not about Sticky.  My take is that this is trying to do something to help out a bad situation.

I know everyone is not going to agree.  But the TINA zine fair has been such an important day for me for such a long time.  Maybe next year zine-makers can work together to make sure someone who has more of an understanding of zines can be involved from the planning stages of the TINA zine fair.

I'll post here again once all the details have been figured out with TINA as well as putting something out on the Sticky website, Sticky Facebook and Sticky Twitter account.  Info will also be available through the TINA website.

Of course I would love to hear your thoughts.  It is my daughter's third birthday in a couple of weeks and we are making her a knight costume for it.  I will be wearing the knight's helmet for protection while you respond.

Coordinator,

I think it's good what you are doing, Sir Luke, and a shame it has to be done. Like many of the above curmudgeons i haven't been to TINA in years, mostly because of travel costs/being too old/feeling left out of what used to be an anarchic event. these things swell to unmanageable sizes over time, and maybe there is a need to let go when they become too institutionalised and, er, owlcore. probably TINA should have just crowdfunded the zine fair in the first place, instead of alienating everybody.

Hope to see some of you at Format in October.

Hi Jennifer,

I will definately be at the Format zine fair which is happening at Format in Adelaide on Sunday 7th October 2012.  I know it is a big big ask but how about everyone who has been thinking about zine fairs on this very group get together and make the pledge to travel to Adelaide to make the Format zine fair even bigger and even more awesome this year?  We all know what can happen if we don't support such events.

Luke.

Luke, you rock.

Your solution isn't a long term one, but it honors the great things many of
us have got out of the TINA zine fair and hopefully inspires a
practical re-imagining of what form it could take in the future.

TINA has already seen two of it's festivals split off from the TINA
umbrella in the last two years. The Octapod (TINA's host organisation)
faces increasing pressure to institutionalise and pay heed to the demands
of the conservative Newcastle City Council and other funding bodies, who
ask why events don't have an entry fee, and suggest things like why don't
you move TINA dates to our "art month" of July, that kind of thing.

The spirit of TINA will move away and spawn new events in Newcastle and
elsewhere.

The other zine fairs nationally are a whole new ball game of quality in
organisation but they still lack what TINA offered: a long weekend immersed
in mind blowing independent art and crazy adventures, topped off by an
awesome zine fair.

I want to reiterate that buying up all the TINA tables, as reckless a
gesture as it is, besides meaning Luke rocks like he always does, it
also sends a message to TINA that the zine community wants their zine
fair handled a certain way & we're willing to commit to a reckless
gesture to ensure that future zine fairs will be handled better,  even
including consultation with & organisation by the community it alleges
to be intended for.

& To book a table at the October 7 Format Festival zine fair, e-mail me
off list, include a description of what your selling, so you sarcastic
crafty owl types can identify yourselves & then wait for real zinesters
to cancel & I'll start taking down names.

I for one, will be crocheting poodle toilet paper covers($80) and
making bird brooches($25), as well as laser cutting some vintage
children's book images into trinkets.

Of course I will be outsourcing labour to a third world country(it's
great to provide sustainable cottage industry work to the natives!). I
will also be photocopying pages from my sketchbook, and uni
assignments and blog entries. I will be stapling them and calling it
an artbook. It will be in full colour.

If I do not double my stall fee, pay for my costs and my fee for
manning the table($45/hour), as well as the fee for whoever mans my
stall during my lunchbreak($67.50/hr) and toilet breaks, I will be
suing the TINA organisation.

I will also be available to provide the definition of a zine to anyone
who wants to know.

Hi everyone,

I just got off the phone with the National Young Writers Festival.  After polite discussions they have come up with the money to fund 52 half tressle table zine stalls at the This Is Not Art Zine Fair this year.  The stalls will be offered for free.  So a big thank you to all those people who spoke up and said that $45 zine stalls were not good enough.  And a massive thank you goes out to all those people who offered to put up money to fund the massive free zine stall - your money is no longer required - but the massive free zine stall lives on in all our minds.

TINA will put out an announcement hopefully this week.

Luke Sinclair/Sticky.
