| Happy Birthday Comrade President! | Happy Birthday Comrade President! Last week on the 21st of February, His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Comrade Robert Mugabe turned 89. Globally this feat is no small achievement particularly if you still have to wake up every day, face a full day and be productive. This is an achievement that few people ever attain. This is an age that many will only whisper about when they are in their grave. It is therefore apt to say, Happy Birthday, Mr. Comrade President.
Every life is a walking book, but any life that is nearly 90 years is a walking library of wisdom, insight, networks and history. Like any good library, you cannot exhaust the library in a day but you could peer through a few useful volumes at a time. Here are some short motivational lessons that this great man has left in his life’s timeline that have inspired me: | Keep fit, not fat Health is never an accident. It will not come without daily effort and discipline. Your habits determine your state of health and mind. Eat healthy and you will live long. Discipline is not torture but the foundation of a longer, healthier life. H.E. Mugabe exercises daily and eats healthy. He loves natural and rich foods. He has managed his weight well. Given the number of dinners he has to attend and the conferences he sits through, this is a feat. You are as fit as you decide to eat and exercise. Read Widely Those who do not read widely will always be shallow and near sighted. Wide reading broadens and grows you. It gives you fresh perspectives to popular events and prepares you for greatness. The deeper you are on the inside the further you will be able to see and the more strategic you will be. Our President is well read and continues to read widely and wisely. What excuse do you have not to read, given your age and your responsibilities? Those that do not love to read do not love to lead. True leaders just have to read because they can see how ignorant they are. Most who follow like listless herds just hear things from those who read. Be Resolute Leadership is not a consensus club and aggregation of opinions. That is not leadership! Leaders are clear about where they want to go and what they want to become. They make decisions and resolutions and stick by them even if the whole world thinks otherwise. Leaders with no spine will never carry heavy loads and transport people to greatness. Instead of creating one successor, create a broad platform of capable people. Articulate your principles and stick by them and if necessary fight for them. Leaders who cannot decide are a liability to their followers. Great leaders decide fast, change slowly and never joke about their intentions which they declare early. Do not retire Retirement is an archaic and fading idea, it is so, so yesterday. How does one invest his life, accumulate wisdom and horn his craft simply to go and sit under a tree the whole day drinking tea by the hour? I think that is a waste of human potential and a waste of life. Life must be lived to the full. You only retire when you are too sick to work or too dead to resurrect immediately. The obsession with retirement makes you waste time, life and potential. Short term revolutionaries could just as well play the lottery because that is where fast and easy success can be found. Great leaders want to live out their dreams and also live out the consequences of their decisions. I will not retire from my purpose and mission. I also do not plan to retire from being a motivational speaker and writer. Be a Family Man Love your family and bless your wife. In choosing a wife be loyal to your goals and no other people’s opinions. Be a man of grace and have a gentleman's manners. Oh, while you are at it always dress for the occasion and the times. Have taste and take holidays. His Excellency does this well. Even when Zimbabwe was at its toughest moment, he took is annual leave. Always create time to rest and reflect, even in the middle of the storm. A fresh mind see things more clearly. Be Strategic Leadership is all about strategy development and strategy execution. Its about understanding people and deploying them effectively. Leaders use intelligence effectively to stay in the know and execute their strategy. Know people for who they are and understand how to balance power. Outmaneuver the competition and reinvent your appeal. Campaign while others are at ease and muse with shiny things. Always cling to your market share and what you know is yours. No dog will ever share its bone with the whole village. Be an expert in timing. Where necessary, defend. Where required, attack. Where you find yourself in a bind, reconcile. Thus will your tenure be long in whatever occupation you choose. Once you have chosen a career, study it daily through different eyes and shoes. Mastery does not come in a day but through daily steps. Use Humour Leadership jobs and situations are stressful but there is always time for a good dose of humour. Use it wisely, apply it evenly and appropriately. Mr. President you have mastered this art well. Lest we forget Never let trends and fads deceive you. This man has refused to be called Dr. Mugabe even though he has been honoured with several doctorates. In hindsight, perhaps he knew that you cannot hold on to what you have not earned. In 1986 when the University of Massachusetts granted Mr. Mugabe an Honorary LLD degree, their citation was: "Your gentle firmness in the face of anger, and your intellectual approach to matters which inflame the emotions of others, are hallmarks of your quiet integrity ... We salute you for your enduring and effective translation of a moral ethic into a strong, popular voice for freedom." Two years, earlier the University of Edinburgh in 1984 honoured His Excellency with an LLD with this citation, “Honoured not only for his extraordinary intellectual discipline and energy but for those qualities of statesmanship which made him one of the great figures of modern Africa.” What have you also learnt from this great leader of our nation? Think positive. Celebrate greatness. Committed to your greatness. Milton Kamwendo | Online bookstore for your convenience | The first ever bookshop to go online.
