| The Nobility of the Profit Motive! | Money is like an aphrodisiac. It inspires great feats, maddening desire and fearless creativity. The lack of money is the root of all desperation and the mother of all evil schemes. People are either inspired by vision or desperation. Whatever the inspiration, when it is seasoned with money it increases the attraction and magnetic effect. Those who say money is not important have not been without it for long. Money is an amplifier, magnifier and human catalyst. Whatever you are, money has the power to magnify your nature. Whatever you are pursuing, money has the scaling power.
The popular view is that money is evil. However this is not true. Money cannot make you good or evil, it can only magnify what you already are and gives you more options. Poverty reduces your options and shrinks your world. Poverty makes people desperate and spiteful. There is nothing as painful as feeling helpless and hopeless. Money makes the imagination go wild and bring color to life.
The profit motive, bridled by principle and the desire to give positive value, is a good thing. I recently watched a documentary that featured the Coca-cola company. I was moved when one of the company's executives who runs their business in South Africa said: "Every who touches our product makes money!" I almost jumped from my seat. The goal of any business must be to enrich people along its value chain. When every who touches a product makes money that product will be enthusiastically. Money has a way of creating loyal and enthusiastic fans. When people see money as evil, profit as evil, they are left without a resource for amplifying and creating good in the world. The profit motive is the cloth that can weave dreams into reality. | People produce People who do not produce are a liability to themselves, others and their host communities. The key to production is acceptable profit that allows the engine of productivity to keep running and growing in capacity. Profit is not cash. Profit is not a tangible measure but a measure of economic efficiency. Profit is your cost of staying in the game until tomorrow. A losing enterprise is a burden and a burning butt in your pocket. Whenever people produce, there is more for everyone. Whenever people produce at a profit there is even more for everyone. Whatever you do, produce and create value. If you do not, prepare to be sidelined. Greatest generosity The greatest generosity is not charitable giving but the gift of honest labour and profit. Business is an act of generosity and abundance. Organisations that serve a greater number of people are rewarded with handsome revenues. Profit making is generosity. Wealth Creation Wealth creation is good and noble. Stealing in all its forms is not good and not godly. There is no pride in wealth that causes you fear and robs you of sleep. The sleep of a labouring man is sweet, the profit of a worthwhile venture is sweeter. Work is not a curse but a blessing. Being an unproductive busy body is a waste of energy. What else is more enjoyable than work? What is more thrilling than work that get rewarded well? Our heavenly Father is a creator. We are created in his nature to create and multiply resources. Early in the Bible one of the first commandments to men was, "Be fruitful and multiply." In today's language it would simply mean, be profitable and create wealth. It is impossible to be profitable and remain poor. It is impossible to multiply while shrinking. The more we create, the more there is to share with others. Wealth creation is critical for any society's survival. Let Competition Prevail Put out to market thy wares and if they stink and suck they will be rejected. Competition creates choice and space. It inspires creativity and the destruction of that which is mediocre. Competition is more real when there is money at stake. I used to see this in our township soccer matches. When it was just a mere football for fun, the competition was bland. When it was a "money game" competition took a different tempo. Let competition prevail and let more value will be created. The profit motive is an accelerator of competition and an inspiration for innovation. As Joseph Schumpeter would assert, innovation is about value creation and entrepreneurship is about "creative destruction." The old will always give way to the new. The unprofitable will always give way to the profitable. The unproductive will always give way to the productive. Be profitable or die. You can afford to be patient for growth, but you have to be impatient for profit. Unprofitable growth, unprofitable enterprises and unprofitable people are a huge burden, sooner or later they are always discarded by nature's forces of progress. How are you creating value?
