The Uhuru Network is a network of Zimbabwean community youths struggling for social and economic justice. Born in the sprawling township of Highfields in Harare the network aims to empower youths to reclaim their lives and their communities in the face of a dictatorial regime that is killing the country. Uhuru is building democracy at the grassroots, believing that communities should be
run on horizontal lines of participation and consensus. People power.
Uhuru spreads hope and resistance in poor communities through using popular education and creative social action to mobilise grassroots youths. These actions range from subversive Uhuru Street Soccer Battles to guerrilla arts performances, from community media initiatives to community forums. Flowers spring from potholes.
Revolution means the revolution of everyday life. To be free is to have basic economic and social rights guaranteed. With this belief at heart Uhuru is pushing the Campaign for Accessible Social Services For All in a country where a corrupt ruling elite has ruined basic services of water, rubbish collection and the like. Uhuru is also pushing a campaign to have the 18th of May declared as a Global Day of Action Against Evictions in Solidarity with Zimbabwe. This is the date that the regime unleashed the vicious Operation Murambatsvina, destroying tens of thousands of homes of the urban poor.
