Stand-up comedian, Alyn Adams, celebrates his recent return to Durban
with what he describes as a "big, gut-wrenching, hijack-defying,
emigration-spurning, belly laugh" which "promises to burst a few sacred
cows, slaughter a few windmills and tilt a few bubbles". RANT BOY, which
debuted at Johannesburg's Civic Theatre last year, received critical
acclaim and comments such as ‘hilarious, witty, well-thought out' (The
Citizen), ‘brave, modern and dishy' (Mail & Guardian) and ‘a non-stop
flow of original material which pours like bars of verbal gold from a
fertile mind' (The Star). In other words, RANT BOY is clever, funny and
entertaining and you'd better book at Computicket soon!

Production info:
The furore which surrounded Durban artist Asiyah Swaleh's exhibition of
paintings of erotic Indian temple art has inspired
internationally-acclaimed playwright Ronnie Govender to write and direct
a one-act play, BACK TO THE FAITH, which makes its debut at the
Playhouse in March.
The second part of this double-bill is BEYOND CALVARY, which Govender
wrote and directed in the ‘60s. The original production, which featured
Prem Singh and the late Slim Moodley, won Govender high praise from the
likes of Alan Paton. It was restaged with Kessie Govender and Dolly
Parmasir a few years later.
Religion and its impact upon people's lives is the link between these
two plays, which are similar in dramatic format, but, in many ways, very
different in terms of situation and storyline.
The plays promise powerful entertainment with a strong cast comprising
Rajesh Gopie, Krijay Govender, Leeanda Reddy and Koobeshan Naidoo.

Jay Pather, Artistic Director of Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre, has pulled
together choreographers from some of South Africa's leading contemporary
dance companies to collaborate with Siwela this season: David Gouldie;
and Lliane Loots, both of whom are known for their ‘on the edge'
physicality and for their ability to create memorable images.
Both have been guest teachers with Siwela Sonke over the past year,
conducting company class and workshops as part of the company's daily
training programme. The multi-award winning David Gouldie is no
stranger to Durban audiences, most recently celebrated for his work with
the Fantastic Flying Fish Dance Company. Lliane Loots is the director of
the University of Natal's Flatfoot Dance Company, and has recently
received critical acclaim for her work, "on my journey I lost my voice
to beauty".
In the final work, gospel and dance merge in Jay Pather and Simpiwe
Magazi's choreography - coinciding with the celebration of Holy days
over this period.
Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre enters into this collaboration fresh from
their appearance as invited guests opening the Interface Intercultural
Arts Festival in London in November last year. In 1998, they received a
Metro Mayor's Achievers Award after Angela Lardant, Mzokuthula Gasa and
Jay Pather received FNB Vita Awards. As starting points for
choreography, the versatile and multi-talented dancers of Siwela Sonke
Dance Theatre provide exciting possibilities for these choreographers.

(wicked, frightening little men), who command the old woman to fetch
water from a river uninhabited by frogs. While attempting to do their
bidding, she gets captured by a band of wild animals who wish to eat
her. She manages to escape, only to be caught by a group of hungry
cannibals. This fascinating fairy story full of magic and excitement

Coetzee's award-winning hit is back for a final ‘victory lap' of South
Africa!
In the last two years, WHITE MEN WITH WEAPONS has been performed in New
York, Australia, Belgium, Holland and Singapore, and now it's back in
Durban, armed with 17 awards and glowing reviews from critics on five
different continents.
In this funny, honest and razor-sharp satire, Coetzee's 13 characters
will take you on an hysterical, historical and hard-hitting journey
through the old SADF on the eve of Nelson Mandela's release.
A Korporaal from Hell, a drug-addicted Durban ‘Rambo' and an Anglican
Chaplain with Tutu-phobia are just three of the creatures you will meet
as they face the dawn of the new South Africa.
"Brilliant ... hilarious satire," New York Westside Resident.

Guardian.
"Funny and forceful," The West Australian.
"There is one word to describe Coetzee's play: BRILLIANT!" Daily News.
"Hilarious and thought-provoking," The Mercury.

spectacular combination of musical talent and social satire ever,
CADENZA opens in the Playhouse Cellar on 6 April for a three-week run.
Subtitled Chaos in the Classics, CADENZA features the extraordinary Rory
Rootenberg and covers an astounding range of music, from opera (all
voices) to folk, with just about everything else inbetween.
This magnificent one-man musical journey is punctuated by rib-rattling
anecdotes and wry observations from Rootenberg whose "kaleidoscopic
personality" (Cape Times), beady observations of the world of music and
astonishing vocal abilities combine to make this a must-see.
Rootenberg is accompanied by pianist Craig McLennan.
"Funny, intelligent ... hilarious," The Argus.
"It is refreshing to see real talent and originality on the cabaret
stage ... a marvellous tribute to opera and Rootenberg's years of
rigorous vocal training," Cape Times.

designs and the direction of its production team.

singing Marguerite and Bronwyn Forbay repeating her performance as
Siebel. Fikile Mvingelwa takes the role of Valentin, with South Africa's
leading bass singer, Rouel Beukes, in the role of Mephistopheles. The

closely with teachers from a number of schools for both physically
challenged and mainstream pupils for the past ten weeks.

with what he described as an "exciting challenge".
"I needed to facilitate teachers'skills development and assist them in
the cultivation of the critical eye necessary to allow freedom of
expression through dance," he continued.
