SOUTH AFRICAN ARTISTS TO PERFORM ON
SOUTH AFRICAN MUSIC DAY
~~ SATURDAY, 27 MARCH 1999~~
On Saturday, 27 March you can watch an exciting South African artist
performing at the music venue nearest you!
South African Music Day is a campaign celebrating South Africa's
extraordinary wealth of musical talent. It aims to achieve total
awareness of South African music throughout the country.
Because it is a concept and not a concert, live performances will take
place a variety of music venues around the country, as opposed to one
single event. A diversity of venues will facilitate an exciting
promotion of a wide spectrum of South African performers.
The organisers of South African Music day and SAMRO are looking to
ensure that music venues across all nine provinces will dedicate
Saturday, 27 March 1999 to original South African artists. Efforts to
link venues to as many radio stations as possible are under way. This
will prove to be both beneficial to the artists and venues, and also
allow for some creative radio programming.
The Department of Arts and Culture has offered national support to this
campaign. Provincial governments who are in a position to host an event,
will dedicate it to South African Music Day, whilst offering a further
opportunity for South African artists to perform. Other events earmarked
to tie in with South African Music Day are the Rand Easter Show in
Johannesburg and the Karoo Fees in Oudtshoorn. A variety of tertiary
institutions are also throwing their weight and expertise behind the
project. All these events will become an integral part of the live
celebrations on the day.
In Kwa-Zulu Natal and the Western Cape, 3rd Ear Music and Making Music
Productions are involved in the organisation of events and venues
respectively.
The MIDI Trust is co-ordinating the live venues overall and is looking
forward to providing you with a completed gig guide of a wonderful
selection of South African music for South African Music Day – 27 March
1999.

GET ON-LINE AND FACE THE MUSIC

February. The website address is: http://www.samusicday.co.za
The M-Web site will include all the latest news about South African
Music Day, provide you with the names of retail stores that will be
offering a 10% discount on all South African music, as well as gig
events that will take place around the country on Saturday, 27 March
1999.
The South African Music Day website is being created by Fuel
Communications (http://www.ffuel.co.za) The award-winning company has
created, amongst others, websites for Singapore Airlines, Wildebeest
Records, Oppikoppi, Madam & Eve, and the Johannesburg Society for the
Blind.
FUEL director, Roelof van Wyk says of the South African Music Day site;
"The website is a virtual pool of endorsements, industry wide support
groups and projects run as part of this day. The graphic interface of
the site refers to South African street iconology without alluding to
any specific music genre, but actually iterates the ‘ear to the ground'
symbolic phrase. The site includes a ‘hot link' section which will list
links to the South African on-line music fraternity, and an e-mail
‘contact' section, allowing viewers to make comments, ask questions or
voice queries. We will also be providing a special section ‘screen
savers' which has downloadable South African Music Day screensavers for
PC."
The South African Music Day website will be hosted by M-Web. M-Web is a
leading South African Internet Service Provider, with more than 140 000
subscribers, which provides Internet websites with a strong South
African flavour. It is committed to the development of South African
music, and recently developed a site for independent South African
artists under the Nebula Boss label (http://www.indie.co.za). M-Web's
headquarters are in Cape Town.
