ARTIST IN RESIDENCE - WINTER SEASON
NALDA SEARLES
The renowned Western Australian fibre/textile artist - Nalda Searles
takes up a three month residency at the BAT Centre from mid-June for the
three months of the Durban winter season.
Hailing from Fremantle, Western Australia, Nalda Searles has been
selected and the first residency in a Visual Arts Exchange programme
between the Artists Foundation of Western Australia and the Bartel Arts
Trust Centre (BAT).
In her native Western Australia, Nalda has worked intensively with local
Aboriginal tribesmen of the Western desert and she is bringing with her
a comprehensive slide show. She will be available to speak with
visitors approximately two afternoons per week at the BAT Centre, as
well as visiting local colleges, schools and art groups. She also plans
to go on an outreach to meet up with regional artists and run workshops
to do some reciprocal practice. However, primarily she will be
gathering information, and documentation through drawing, painting
photographing, writing and collecting of sample works. It is then
hoped that she will develop a piece or pieces of work based on her
research in the rural areas.
The exchange programme was the brainchild of Christina McGuinness - a
highly respected curator and administrator in arts development for local
government authorities in Western Australia. On meeting and working
with the BAT Centre’s Marisa FickJordan she proposed to mount an
exhibition of metal and wire work created by KwaZulu-Natal artists in
Fremantle in 2000Through her influence, ArtsWA was involved to provide
funding assistance and impetus to this exciting proposal.
